A Message to "Johnny the Vandal"

[edit]

Grow up, you stupid moron. You're a tiresome waste of space. I never get to see your vandalism anyway because plenty of good editors revert it within a minute or two of you wasting your time vandalising this page (and you seem to insist on doing it in the middle of the night my time, when I'm not around to see it anyway). So do us all a favour and give up editing Wikipedia, and let lots of people make more productive use of their time. 29/7/06

Seriously, go and see a psychiatrist - you are displaying classic symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, apart from which through your activities you are a disgrace to your country, bringing the U.S. into disrepute (hint - a middle finger isn't an insult in this country). 17/8/06

Now he's gone for good because of an indefinite IP block, it's time to rejoice and be thankful he is gone. Whoever blocked that IP address that didn't claim it was him (but it was him), thank you a lot. --VelairWight 01:29, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protected your talk page

[edit]

I've semi-protected your talk page for 24 hours. I hope you don't mind. What's brought all this on? G-Man * 22:04, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that - it's "Johnny the Vandal", he's been targetting/stalking me, Hephaestos, and a few musical groups for it must be 3 or 4 years now (it certainly seems like it, anyway!). I just put it down to mental illness - it's certainly some compulsion which has made him throw away 23 user accounts in the last 6 days. -- Arwel (talk) 22:12, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why are so many people picking on Arwel Parry??

[edit]

he seems like a fine chap and a fine contributer to wikipedia so leave him alone whoever keeps bothering him. p.s. sorry to read about your mother arwel hope she is well now.

btw arwel i am the guy ur locked into a mini edit war with regarding uea alumni, personally i think the list is better ranked in order of notability rather than alphabetically, dont you? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jamesmh2006 (talkcontribs) 02:05, 9 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Actually, no - ranking alumni by "notability" is inherently POV and therefore contrary to Wikipedia policy, how do you decide that someone is more notable than another? Alphabetical order is the only objective order to list them in. -- Arwel (talk) 22:50, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted vandalism

[edit]

Hi Arwel, I just hope to inform you that I reverted an anonymous vandal yesterday on your talk page. It was not very nice stuff what this guy posted. Just thought It might be a good idea to let you know considering the extreme offensiveness of the vandalism. Cheers! Sincerely, --Brent Harding 14:04, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Brent. This was "Johnny the Vandal" - if you take a look at my talk page's history you'll see that he does this regularly using a host of throwaway accounts. He just gets permanently blocked on sight. -- Arwel (talk) 07:51, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn't know it was this severe or that he was a long term vandal, well thanks for letting me know If I ever see him again now I will Issue no more warnings and report him straight to AIV to get permenantly blocked by an administrator like he deserves. I've got this query from Tomos ANTIGUA Tomos. I'm ashamed to say I don't even understand the question, let alone know the answer - hoping you can help. "Currently, the Welsh wikipedia's default settings mean that all intrawiki (mewnwici) links are underlined without having to roll the mouse over them. It's different from all the other wikipedias, and it looks a little ugly. It can be changed by going to "fy newisiadau" (there's a detailed explanation about it in Y Caffi), but as a bureaucrat, I was wondering if there was a way for you to change the default settings of the site so that it looks more professional for everyone." Deb 22:21, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I really understand the problem, I think my personal settings have always been to "never" underline the links, so I wouldn't have noticed any difference - my en.wikipedia settings are identical so the two have always looked the same to me! I've posed a request for advice/assistance to the wikitech mailing list. -- Arwel (talk) 23:06, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I entered the fan club a fair while ago, possibly because Mr Boring-Vandal Esq tends to edit when I'm editing and he's not very subtle and I'm quick on the ol' permablock button.

Fascinating to see the editing/protecting of a wikipedia entry as it unfolds...

Why have you deleted a song which i put on the page. I am a united fan and i know that we sing it. Also it didn't have any bad or affensive language. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jonbagnall (talkcontribs) 16:24, 15 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Because it is unencyclopaedic trivia, and moreover was improperly formatted so that even if it was notable it did not appear properly in the article. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information - if every song ever sung about a footballer was put in their article we would never find the important information, and there's already far too much inconsequential rubbish being put in articles which needs to be weeded out. -- Arwel (talk) 18:09, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance with editor

[edit]

I am presuming that you are an Admin as I noticed you recently blocked an editor? On this article, Football hooliganism, this user, User:80.61.217.173 has taken great offence at some of the article. However, rather than trying to deal with it by discussing it in the talk page of the article, they have chosen to continually vandalise the article with accusations of racism. I have reverted their edits twice, but clearly cannot keep reverting them. The last edit has added very sarcastic, insulting comments and removed a BBC source. I have even tried to appease the user by leaving a message on their talk page suggesting they bring it up on the talk page of the article, but they have simply chosen to ignore that and vandalise the article again. And ignoring my comments tryint to reason with them, and trying to get some common ground. Would you please have a look for me at the article and see what can be done?♦Tangerines BFC ♦·Talk 18:42, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Jutland, Grand Fleet image removal.

[edit]

Hello!

I am sorry if I am wrong in leaving a message like this, perhaps I should be posting this somewhere else as a part of the discussion area of the article. I am a newbie at this though, so please bear with me.

As you know, I removed the image entitled "Grand_fleet_jutland.jpg" from the article. The reason was that it is not, in fact, a picture of the Grand Fleet (or of the High Seas Fleet for that matter). It is actually a painting depicting the Austro-Hungarian Navy during maneuvers in the Adriatic.

It is featured on the cover of the book "K.u.K. Flotte 1900-1918" (K.u.K. is short for Kaiserliche und Königliche Kriegsmarine), by author Wladimir Aichelberg, and was also featured in a book by Macintyre, Donald and Bathe, Basil W. I do not know the English (i.e. original) title of the book, but the Swedish title was: "Örlogsfartyg genom seklen" (Warships through the centuries), ISBN 91-46-12528-0.

The painting itself, called "K.u.K. Eskader in der Adria", was painted in 1913 by artist August von Ramberg, and is supposedly the property of the Museum of War in Vienna.

The battleship leading the fleet is SMS Viribus Unitis. Her class had a very un-British armament layout of three guns per turret, which can be clearly seen on larger images of the painting. Also, the Viribus Unitis is flying the Austro-Hungarian naval ensign, which again is seen more clearly on larger versions.

The source page of the image (http://pubpages.unh.edu/~jpsabol/jutland/images.html) is titled "Images of the battle", but even so features an image of the High Seas Fleet being led by SMS Blücher, which was sunk at Dogger Bank. Also, HMS Dreadnought did not participate at Jutland. It seems that this page, being so titled, is somewhat inconsistent in showing "images of the battle".

If you want more evidence, download this pdf, called die münze - 3 ausgabe 2006.pdf: [1]. This pdf contains information about a collector´s medal being made, apparently using the painting as a model.

I hope this explains my action of removal.

Regards --JT Swe 13:28, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for explaining your reasons for deleting the picture from the Battle of Jutland page - I have taken a look at some of the references you have given and found "Die Münze" particularly informative, and I agree with your deletion. The best place to explain this is on Talk:Battle of Jutland, and I have taken the liberty of copying your note there together with my explanation of why I agree with you, so hopefully the picture will now stay deleted! Best wishes, -- Arwel (talk) 21:07, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RORY CELLAN-JONES - MALEVOLENT ENTRY

[edit]

Hi Arwel,

Someone has been maliciously altering my wikipedia entry. I am currently involved in a campaign AGAINST the NUJ's boycott of Israeli goods. But someone has put in an entry suggesting that I am calling FOR a boycott. A friend has deleted this - but I would not be surprised to see this recur. Can anything be done to stop this?

Best wishes,

Rory —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rorycellan (talkcontribs) 19:19, 5 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Rory,
The edits appear to have been made by a very occasionally-editing account, and by an occasional IP address (probably the same person, I suspect). As such, I don't think they're likely to recur, especially as I've left a strongly-worded warning about violating the Biographies of Living People policy on their talk pages (it's particularly ironic that they actually linked to your blog and appear to have got the positions of the two sides on the Israel boycott issue diametrically reversed!).

Bernard Weatherill

[edit]

Please note that I did not, as you stated, alter Lord Weatherills entry to as it was before his death. When I heard of his death, I checked his entry and noted that his death had already been entered. However, when I checked a few moments later, it was not apparent. I therefore entered those details. Frankly, I am annoyed that you feel the need to make unsubstatiated claims which are not true. I altered that entry in service to the Wikipedia community, and am frustrated that you feel the need to send sch a negative message.

Further, I decided to put the links in to the dates, again as a favour to the users of this site. The links are there, as I'm sure you'll accept, to make it easier for the users to navigate the site. I entered them for that reason alone. I see no reason for your tone with regards the links.

Many Thanks —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.140.242.237 (talk) 21:35, 7 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I am sorry that you interpreted my comment as hostile, it was not intended as such, more as friendly advice. However, your edit of 17:08 BST today had the effect, with the exception of changing four "is"es to "was" and the addition of one sentence recording his death, of reverting the article to the state it was in before the first edit today (see [2]), when the article had already been edited 17 times to reflect his death and amending the tense of the article throughout (see [3] for the changes which you overwrote). With regard to linking standalone years, it is considered that such links are generally distracting to readers and usually serve little purpose and should be discouraged; this is a reversal from the early years of Wikipedia when all years were routinely linked, but I think it helps articles look and read better - see Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(dates_and_numbers)#Partial_dates. I hope this helps. -- Arwel (talk) 21:57, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

EU Driving licences

[edit]

You said drivers moving to the UK do not have to exchange their driving licence within any time limit. That may be so for the UK, but some other countries do have a time limit after which the "foreign" licence is no longer valid. I had to exchange my licence when I moved to Switzerland. The justification is that the authorities cannot "endorse" a foreign licence.

The sentence was supposed to be saying that all EU countries accept licences from all other EU countries in lieue of test passes, and the old licence is then cancelled. What time limit applies is a different point.

I have re-phrased the sentence, I hope you approve. TiffaF 13:19, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but Switzerland is not part of the EU, so it's not surprising that you were not covered by the mutual recognition arrangement when you moved there. If you take a look at the UK government site I linked to before, you'll see that Switzerland is not listed there. Regards, -- Arwel (talk) 15:35, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know Switzerland is not part of the EU, I live there! But, it has signed up to many EU agreements, including the one for mutual recognition of driving licences. If it wasn't covered by the agreement for mutual recognition of driving licences, I wouldn't have been able to swop my British licence for a Swiss one, I would have had to take a new test.
Swiss driving licences look like this: [4], which is EU-standard format (PS, that is not my picture).
The point I was trying to make, is that you don't have to pass a new test when you move from one EU country (+CH) to another, you can hand in your old licence which is accepted in lieue of a test pass certificate. How long you are allowed to to drive on your "foreign" licence before you must swop it varies from country to country, and, as you pointed out, in the case of Britain appears virtually unlimited.
I have split these paragraphs off into a new sub-section "Issues when moving permanently from one country to another". If you can improve it further, please do so. TiffaF 07:01, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know when the nicknames stopped being shown in the infobox - I hadn't noticed that before, but there's always the possibility they'll get reinstated so we might as well get it right. -- Arwel (talk) 11:58, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikibreak

[edit]

I shall be taking a break from Wikipedia for about a week, following the death of my mother this morning. -- Arwel (talk) 10:42, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am very sorry to read this (however belatedly). You have my deepest sympathy. --Orange Mike 18:58, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

David Beckham

[edit]

Is there any way to run a check on the editors that have been lambasting me on the David Beckham talk page? I find it strange that there are 4 or 5 editors that have edited nowhere other than that talk page just to have a go at me, and that have all turned up in the last 24hrs or so. I had a look at the various admin pages, but didn't really see anywhere that was suitable for such a request. Cheers, Darkson (Yabba Dabba Doo!) 07:46, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It has occurred to me that all these new editor might be sock puppets for a user I've had problems with before - User:SanchiTachi. However, I can't find any way of trying to get this confirmed one way or the other. Or am I meant to just sit and take it? Darkson (Yabba Dabba Doo!) 12:50, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seems they've started on you now. Another couple of "new" users that have never edited anywhere other than the DB talk page have emerged. Is it the correct policy to take this to Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets, as I'm not the only one there to have become suspicious? I'm now not 100% convinced it's Sanchi, but I am still convinced sock puppetry is happening. Darkson (Yabba Dabba Doo!) 20:57, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It does appear very suspicious when these users' only contributions to Wikipedia is over something so trivial, and they all seem to re-hash the same arguement. Dave101talk  21:51, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm just in the process of compiling a request for other admin intervention on WP:AN/I. -- Arwel (talk) 21:54, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seen it - many thanks Arwel. I've left a comment there. If that's not the correct procedure (I wasn't sure if it was an admin-only page or not), please feel free to delte it. Darkson (Yabba Dabba Doo!) 23:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I find it ironic that one of thier biggest complaints was that "we call it soccer, not football", yet DB might make his Galaxy debut against Chelse in the World Series of Football!Darkson (Yabba Dabba Doo!) 01:27, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Special Barnstar
Thank you for your help on the David Beckham talk page. Regardless of the final outcome, I was feeling swamped by all the new "editors" that had decided to gang up on me, and I was seriously considering leaving the Wiki project (wheter that would have been a good thing I'll let others decide), so thanks for the help Darkson (Yabba Dabba Doo!) 00:15, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know, I just thought that caps were caps no matter the appearance; I didn't know they just had to be in the domestic league match games only.

Fair use rationale for Image:Jer20f.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Jer20f.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Barliner 21:51, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

POV pushing

[edit]

Hi, please could you take a look at Boris Johnson. This has been the subject of an edit conflict with POV pushing by unregistered editors without citing sources. One of them has now started adding sources but these are blogs and I am not sure if these are acceptable. Also, I am not happy about the POV word "politically motivated" in the secton title and the POV word "accurately" in the lasrt paragraph. But I can't edit these because of WP:3RR, even though one of those reverts was completely unrelated. Thanks. Viewfinder 10:23, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that you've removed the fair use rationale on this image. How can a picture of a 1750 year old coin, one of only two in existence, which is kept in a museum which does not permit photography by the public not be non-replaceable fair use? -- Arwel (talk) 08:44, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Because I don't think there's any copyrighted material in that image, so fair use does not apply. If it turns out that it is in fact fair use after all, then go ahead and re-add the rationale. —Remember the dot (talk) 18:07, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh banknote articles.

[edit]

Arwel, can you please help us out with the articles at Banknotes of the Chief Treasury of Wales Limited and Banknotes of the Black Sheep Company of Wales Limited? I'd really appreciate it. - (Numismaticman 05:42, 11 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Afraid not, I think I've only ever seen one of those and don't know much about them. They never had much, if any, circulation (and I lived not far from Llandudno at the time). -- Arwel (talk) 08:45, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Careful about blocking "number users"

[edit]

I just received the following message on "my" talk page

User talk:82.120.194.192 Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. -- Arwel (talk) 21:18, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Technically, it is not my personal page, as I simply cruising and was not logged in yet... but I sure would not like having my access blocked because some berk is wandalizing Latvia (I never did any edit on that page, let alon the contentious ones). I just notice that such codes seem to go around awfully easy to be used as reliable blocking id's. Yours truly, be well. --Svartalf 13:11, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Am i allowed to remove vandalism warnings, copyright image notices, etc, from my user talk page? User:Yamakiri user has threatened to permanently protect my user talk page so that i cant edit it. Can i remove copyright image notices at least? i hope you see this soon. thx Modelun88 00:23, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Getting of tired of going behind him... Anyways, he's removed block notices, and I'm not an admin so I just requested that his page be protected and that he get a block. P.S. he's copied and pasted this on quite a few pages now.Yamakiri 00:45, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some months ago you commented that English must not be my first language. I answered your remark on my talk page, but you still haven't responded.

ClaimJumperJack

[edit]

Good block ClaimJumperJack, we went through the exact same BS with "ClaimJumperPete" back in May... Studerby 22:37, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have reassessed William Brown (admiral) as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force. We are currently revisiting all listed Good articles in an effort to ensure that they continue to meet the Good article criteria.

In reviewing the article, I came across some issues that may need to be addressed; I have left a detailed summary on the article's talk page. As a result I have put William Brown (admiral)'s GA status on hold. This will remain in place for a week or so before a final decision is taken as to the article's status.

I've left this message because, from the article talk page, you were closely involved with its original GA assessment. If you no longer edit this article, please accept my apologies - it's got a fairly complicated editing history, but I don't like to do this without trying to notify potentially interested editors ;)
