How can I verify Mike Bennet (Writer-Producer) wiki page using links, citations, references etc? All links etc have been deemed invalid or inappropriate. --Danbeeott (talk) 15:08, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Danbeeott. We invite people to jump in and start editing without knowing all the stuff there is to know. (All editors started this way.) The main thing here is that we have policies on what topics (and people) warrant an encyclopedia article. We call it "Notability". Basically it means you have to show that the world already considers the this person notable enough to write about. You want to show that "Reliable Sources" have already written about him. He doesn't have to be the main subject of the piece, but you need to show that some Reliable Sources have written at least a few sentences about him. For example a newspaper writing about another artist and merely a one sentence comment "produced by Mike Bennet" doesn't count, that's a passing mention. "Reliable" here basically means publications with professional editorial control and a reasonable reputation for fact checking. Newspapers, books, magazines, etc. Websites are good *if* they they have a similar sort of editorial control as a conventional newspaper or magazine. (I didn't look closely, but recordproduction.com looks doubtful.) You can't use blogs, social media, or personal websites for this. Anyone could write anything about themselves, or about someone else. The source also has to be independent of the person the article is about (in other words you can't cite a company where he works to establish Notability). Once you have some sources to establish Notability, then you can potentially use his website (Mikebennettproducer.com) to support routine biographical information about him, or a website of some company he works with to establish other info.
Ideally the sources should be included as proper references in the article, but it's ok if you're still figuring those out. A basic reference works like this
This is a sentence in the article.<ref>This is a source backing up that information</ref>.
There are options for fancy references, but just putting a link inside the ref works, or plain text with name date and page of a newspaper for example. At a minimum you can just use this link to post sources on the article's talk page. That is enough to prevent the article from being deleted. If you can't find sources to establish Notability then he's not really an encyclopedia topic, and the article could get deleted. There would be a one week notice-and-discussion period if someone were to nominate the article for deletion.

Help me![edit]

I am trying verify wiki page Mike Bennett (Writer-Producer) - A warning was placed on the page and I received a stern message from a wiki admin proposing the deletion of the page. I am new to Wiki and apologise for not having sorted this sooner.

Can someone please let me know how I can verify the notability of Mike Bennett within Wiki standards? What changes or extra information is needed to remove the "This biographical article needs additional citations for verification" from the Top of the page.

Hi. It looks like the article is no longer tagged for speedy deletion. However, the article still needs more citations. What Wikipedia needs to verify notability is independent, in depth, reliable sources. Looks like its off to a good start, but more would help a lot. Hi, I worked with Mr Bennett in a few projects, and I felt he should be noted for his contribution to the Arts. He has done a lot of stuff as a writer, producer, actor, musician - he's worked all over the world with some very big names and I was surprised to find so little information about him online.

I will continue to source more citations. Can you let me know why 'discogs is not allowed to be used as a source for citations? It is considered an industry database for individuals who work in the music industry? Using this to reference Bennett's contributions to various records led to the page being tagged for speedy deletion...? Thanks again - You have been very helpful. Discogs is fine in the external links section but it can't be used as a Reliable Source because it works the same way Wikipedia does, the general public can write anything. I was involved in a case recently where someone wrote information at Wikipedia and at IMDB.com and other user-submitted-content sites. Then they used the IMDB listing and other sites as sources to back up the Wikipedia article. Anyone at the other sites trying to check the information would find the Wikipedia article apparently confirming it. It was all fictional and the sourcing was entirely circular. It was a few years before anyone spotted the problem. It took several editors a long time to nail down that it was all an extremely elaborate hoax. Most information at Discogs can probably be properly sourced by citing the credits published on the CD itself. Alsee (talk) 21:17, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I removed <ref>Simpson, 2008, pg. 309.</ref>. Can you re-add it with more info to identify the source? A title would be nice, grin.
I skimmed the articles and the sources. I'll list the items for which I didn't see sourced. You can use this as a checklist. Each item should either be is already covered by an existing source (maybe I missed it), or it should have a source added to cover it, or items could simply be removed from the article. Then you can remove the {{BLP sources|date=January 2016}} from the article:
