Thanks ... are you happy with how review processes are going? Anything I can help with? - Dank (push to talk) 00:16, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
Congratulations, Dank! The list you nominated, List of plant family names with etymologies, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best lists on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured list. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Giants2008 (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:26, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

List of descriptive plant species epithets

Hello, Dank,

Since these pages have been moved around a lot, there have been a lot of broken redirects that were deleted. You can see them at the Broken Redirect list. Since you were involved with these moves, I thought if there were some you wanted to restore, you could see which ones have been deleted and decide if there were any you wanted to restore and correct to the new page title. In general, if you leave a redirect when you move a page, then the bots will change all of the old redirects to point to the new page location. If you don't leave a redirect, then the old redirects are broken and are deleted, either by a patrolling admin or by AnomieBOT III. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:41, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Liz, I assumed the bot would get them, hope I haven't made any extra work for you. - Dank (push to talk) 22:37, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

It's really impressive what you've contributed with those lists. Danke for all that! ◅ Sebastian 05:58, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Bitte! And feel free to correct any mistranslations. - Dank (push to talk) 15:31, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
(Btw, since you like the lists, you might want to look at the Main Page on Friday ... one of them will be "Today's Featured List".) - Dank (push to talk) 19:52, 23 February 2022 (UTC) (copied from Talk:List of descriptive plant species epithets (A–H)):
That's great, and well deserved! So, if I can be of help to make these lists shine, now's the time! Which of the two will it be?
I didn't notice anything I would call a “mistranslation”, maybe just a few variations of interpretation. One that comes to mind is the translation of amygdalinus, amygdaliformis, amygdaloides as "almond", which of course catches the common root of these three terms. If we want to be more exact, a circumlocution like “resembling an almond” might better fit all three. More to my taste would be splitting up the three, so that we could have amygdaliformis = “almond-shaped” and amygdalinus, amygdaloides = “resembling an almond”. These latter two might well refer to other resemblances than the shape, although I don't have an example for that. ◅ Sebastian 22:02, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. Wikipedia:Today's featured list/February 25, 2022. I'll be back on-wiki soon-ish. - Dank (push to talk) 22:17, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Actually, maybe now's not the time for any of the epithet lists, after all. As the announcement at #TFL notification says, it's List of plant family names with etymologies. So I'llI may look at that list, but, since it's being featured, I'd expect it to be even better. ◅ Sebastian 22:28, 23 February 2022 (UTC) (There was a little EC, which leads to duplicate information in our two messages. No worries, I do read your messages.)

December songs

Belated congrats! - I noticed that you do TFA blurbs again, that's great. For that symphony, I believe we have to tell our readers less about conductors but first that there's singing, which yes, was there for the second, but I'm not sure our readers would know. And then also singing of what. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:54, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

I see some discussion at the FAC talk page. - Dank (push to talk) 14:08, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Etymology question

Hi, Dan! I am seeking a source for the common name of Symphyotrichum adnatum. The epithet is in the protologue, but the common name, scaleleaf aster, is something I'd also like to put in the etymology section for the article (expanding.. see here). Do you happen to know where I could find that type of information, or do you have a source for common names of plants? Eewilson (talk) 21:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Quattrocchi's CRC World Dictionary is my go-to for common names, but it doesn't have that one (or even the genus for that one). Coombes has the genus but not the species. Sorry. Not sure where to send you for this one (other than the usual online sources). - Dank (push to talk) 21:56, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
What about Aster adnatus? Depends on the date of the book. The species' genus was changed in the mid-1990s, and it was also in Lasallea and Virgulus at some time. What would the "usual online sources" be for the etymology of a common name? :) Eewilson (talk) 22:03, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Quattrocchi is no help for any of those. Gbif.org lists the common name, and there are other helpful sites listed under the "names" tab for this species at eol.org, but it's probably less than you're looking for. You could put "showing the leaf scales" in an image caption, if they stand out in the image. - Dank (push to talk) 22:22, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for checking all those. I think your idea of the image caption is a good one. Take care! Eewilson (talk) 22:44, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Sure thing. Also ... I might be missing something obvious, because my focus has been on scientific names recently, and I haven't been thinking about common names. I'll ping you if I think of anything else. - Dank (push to talk) 22:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Than-K, Dan-K! :) Eewilson (talk) 05:07, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
