Many congratulations on improving William de Braose, 3rd Lord of Bramber to GA. Good work Doug, :) Daicaregos (talk) 17:44, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Dai - My first! Doug (at Wiki) 19:07, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, let me also offer my congratulations, Doug. It's a well-deserved GA. I wish to thank you for correcting my mistake with that archaic English letter in the quote on Maud de Braose, Baroness Wigmore. Honestly, I could not figure out what it meant, now I know. Thanks again!--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 16:38, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Jeanne. I'm always ready to help out where I can. - Doug (at Wiki) 16:42, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am so pleased to have learned something new; especially regarding history. The fact that there was a specific letter for the th sound just goes to show that it's a significant feature in the English language-and why so many foreigners have difficulty in pronouncing it.--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 16:56, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you are pleased. You can relate it to the signs like "Ye Olde Tea Shoppe" Not "Ye" at all. It was really "þe" which in many scripts looked very similar to "ye" but was pronounced "the". - Doug (at Wiki) 17:29, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, ye doesn't make sense in this cited example. Wasn't ye an archaic form of "you"?--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 09:04, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think you have missed the point I am making. Signs over shops in tourist spots in England often begin "Ye Olde....". They are in fact a corrupt version of "The Olde". The word ye meaning you does not come into it. -- Doug (at Wiki) 13:17, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know it doesn't come into it, which is why I'm curious as to why they used the letter y instead of the original letter (I cannot find that letter on my Italian keyboard).--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 14:27, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I see. It's just the similarity of the letters which caused the problem. There's a full explanation on the Wikipage Thorn (letter) -- Doug (at Wiki) 17:55, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just a friendly note. Before removing maintenance templates, it is important that the issues are resolved or addressed through consensus. Specifically, you removed the cleanup template to the above referenced article, without addressing the MOS compliance issues. Feel free to contact me if you have questions. Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 21:40, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cindy - I understand your comment but I refer you to Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup
"Don't add tags for trivial or minor problems," and "Avoid tagging articles if you can easily fix the problem"
The change of d. to died is trivial as is the use of emdash. Neither affect the understanding of what was an article in its early stage. As you have since proved, you could easily fix the problems rather than tag the article with the template.
The proliferation of tagging templates should be avoided. They clutter up the environment to little purpose unless they are specific enough to guide an editor to the issue (as the other two you added were).

Thanks for your input re armorials. I have some questions for you on the talk page I hope you can help with. (Lobsterthermidor (talk) 22:54, 12 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]

With this edit you sourced a fact from Cokayne 2000, p. 464. Did you read Cokayne or are you taking the information from one of the internet sources which are else where cited as citing Cokayne. If the latter then please add the initial source you are citing WP:SAYWHEREYOUREADIT. -- PBS (talk) 11:42, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should follow the advise in WP:SAYWHEREYOUREADIT "However, if you have read Smith's book yourself, you may cite it directly; there is no need to give credit to any sources, search engines, websites, library catalogs, etc., that led you to that book." I keep an higgledy piggledy library of on-line books for this purpose (eg user:PBS/Library#George Edward Cokayne) -- PBS (talk) 14:21, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

House of Braose

[edit]

Hi Doug. About a year ago, you had a discussion about original research with User:Lobsterthermidor, who has now retired from WP. He added much OR to many articles, and I'm gradually working my way through a clean-up program of his contributions (see my list). As an expert on the Braoses, are you happy that House of Braose is sufficiently free from OR?  —SMALLJIM  11:49, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The content of the main article is all readily available in reliable sources although it is not well referenced. The "Arms" section is a bit more suspect. Several of the comments appear to be opinions and conclusions drawn from doubtful evidence. I'll just take out the ones I feel need to go. Doug (at Wiki) 12:10, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much. I'll add it to the "fixed" list.  —SMALLJIM  14:18, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

3rd Opinion

[edit]

Greetings, I've looked at your content dispute with another user and the first thing which struck me was that the content which you removed was added by another user here. There is a strong probability that the IP which reverted you is a WP:SOCK of this user (take a look at the contributions, there is an history of being disruptive). I think you can consider a sockpuppet investigation. I have removed your post in the WP:30 because I think this isn't even a proper content dispute. If I happen to be wrong, feel free to re-post it there. Sincerely, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 19:06, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also a volunteer at 3O. Please do not repost it, however, until the matter has been thoroughly discussed on the article talk page. 3O, like all other forms of mediated content dispute resolution, requires a thorough talk page discussion before seeking assistance from DR. If the other editor will not engage in discussion, consider my recommendations given here. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 19:19, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both for your helpful advice. Doug (at Wiki) 22:31, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Louis de Cardevac

[edit]

Hello Dougatwiki - impressed by your work above, and seeming to be more proficient than me with Wiki techniques (not difficult!) how to merge with same person described as Louis de Cardavac on Polish Wiki with Louis de Cardevac who are one & the same svp?

An error still occurs while saving: states - "Your changes could not be completed"?? Any guidance how to solve would be much appreciated - thanks. M Mabelina Mabelina (talk) 08:53, 29 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting

[edit]

Hi Doug: thanks for your explanation re: de Braose. I appreciate it. I actually was following the pattern of sorting for Augustine of Hippo in the MOS; but based on your explanation I can see how I got confused. There are others in the Bishops of Llandaff category I may have inadvertently changed (and one I left alone). Could you please check them for correct sorting? My edits are/were all good faith ones.

Sorry for the trouble and thanks for catching the issue. --FeanorStar7 10:46, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your response; I agree with your comments. I will be more careful in the future re: sorting. Thanks again. --FeanorStar7 11:32, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
