Prior accounts?

[edit]

Hi. I noticed that very soon after you created your account, you started commenting on a number of WP:AfDs, which is unusual behavior for a brand new editor. Could you tell me if you have had any previous wikipedia accounts? Thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 01:07, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Roy Smith and thank you for reaching out. Also tagging Netherzone to answer same Q. I'm struggling to understand why my account was blocked, and how to unblock it if possible. To answer your question - no, I am a brand-new wikipedia user/editor. I have several friends and acquaintances who are retired and spend a lot of time editing wikipedia and I wanted to get involved as well. I have spent the last several years listening to them talk about editing and some of the funny stuff they see, so I have some insight from listening to them, but really my mother always said "if you can read you can cook, if you can read, you can sew...." so I read and learn just about anything. I'm old enough to remember the internet before there was an internet, and my very first "word processing" machine was a 3B2 terminal connected to a mainframe running Unix.... and so as a secretary back in those days, I typed up technical documents for scientists using nothing but the Unix text editors "ed" then, later, the souped-up visual editor called "vi." So wiki markup and HTML for that matter is not so different -- or foreign to me -- so easy to learn/figure out. Anyone wondering why the comments on AFD pages - it's because others have suggested that it's a good way to learn the rules of the road. So that, combined with my existing knowledge of "mark up" makes it come quite naturally to me. And of course, my ability to read so it's not too hard to learn anything. And if you dont' want to read Wikipedia for how to do stuff in Wikipedia, there's a zillion YouTube videos as well. I hope that explains! And if you can help point me in the direction to get support to unblock my account, I would be forever in your debt! Duncan079 (talk) 22:43, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can you get your established editor friends to vouch for you and post links to these youtube videos you are referring to please. Spartaz Humbug! 22:51, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t have permissions to share what equates to account information aka SPI of anyone, especially not in a public forum. Incredible that instead of explaining exactly why you feel you have evidence of some wrong doing, you’re trying to extract personal information on a public forum which could be easily misconstrued as pfishing. Unblock Request

[edit]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

My account is not a sock puppet. (I had to look up what sock/sock puppet even was!) As I explained away (in response to Roy Smith below) what one user described as "unusual behavior for a new user" and my response pretty much covers it all; there is not much more to say. I have heard that Wikipedia can be pretty swampy, but was a little surprised to be blocked for voting on pages that for the most part, seem pretty clear. I skip voting on complex issues as I am new, there's still a lot to learn. One of the "etiquette" rules I read on the "page 1" of "how to edit" and engage on wikipedia is "always assume good intentions."

It seems that didn't happen in this case where I was blocked before I could even respond to Roy Smith. Thank you for consideration! Duncan079 (talk) 19:26, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficient for any reviewing administrator to take action. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that

  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    1. understand what you have been blocked for,
    2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    3. will make useful contributions instead.

Please read the guide to appealing blocks for more information. signed, Rosguill talk 23:48, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Well, you can respond to Roy's last comment now. 331dot (talk) 20:31, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

i see no response from RoySmith? Duncan079 (talk) 18:02, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You said "in this case where I was blocked before I could even respond to Roy Smith". If you have no additional comment, okay. While you cannot reveal other accounts here, you can ask those other established editors off wiki to comment here of their own volition. 331dot (talk) 18:28, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
