Some formatting hints for Montana highways[edit]

I made some edits to Montana Highway 13, and I'd like to offer you some suggestions. The article is pretty good, so keep up the good work.

  • Montana highway designations are abbreviated MT nn, and since {{jct}} abbreviates them that way, we should in our writing be consistent. I added the abbreviation in parentheses in the lead sentence, and then abbreviated all other references to state highways.
  • {{convert}} can handle the adjective form of measurements by using |adj=mid and following that with |-long then you'll get "112-mile-long (180 km)" as the compound adjective.
  • I personally don't use {{rp}} ever, but I don't think it should be used that way. It's kinda confusing to use it in the footnote instead of using |page= or |pages= in the citation template. I believe that {{rp}} should only be used after the footnote like </ref>{{rp|4}}. That way when it's repeated, it displays as [1]:4 or [1]:155–6
  • Last suggestion, but since these are American topics, they should be using American date formatting, i.e. August 5, 2012. On Wikipedia, if the other format is used, it doesn't have a comma between the month and year, so 5 August 2012.

It was my first time creating articles within this project, and I hope that my position on the other side of the world doesn't diminish my ability to contribute too much. Thank you very much for your pointers and I will be sure to include them in later articles. You're doing good, especially for someone that doesn't live in the States. Another thought that I had was concerning the citations. I tend to be a touch picky about them, as I've found that if you get them right early on, then any future work to polish the article for GAN/ACR/FAC is that much easier. Plus, I've found that once an editor is in the habit of supplying author, date, work, publisher, etc that it makes it much easier to just do that always instead of digging to complete a reference later. You might not have your copy of a newspaper article immediately handy to re-verify the page number or reporter name at a later date
Ok, so looking at MT 24, one of the things that I did was to fill out all of the information on the road log reference. My personal habit is to never omit a publisher from the citation template. If dealing with a "corporate work", like something from MDT, I try to find the specific subdivision of the agency that produced it if there isn't a named author. In this case, that subdivision is the "Transportation Planning Division, Data and Statistics Bureau, Road Inventory and Mapping Section". You might want to shorten that to just "Road Inventory and Mapping Section", I don't know. I ran the whole thing for now, but I do have a tendency to shorten them up. (If a source doesn't say, I've been known to use the generic "Staff" to ascribe an author to a corporately authored source.) Then I added the page numbers.
For the Montana Highways website, the original version was written by Mike Ballard and then "rescued" and updated by Robert V. Droz. So I listed them as the authors. The current site was last updated on October 17, 2006, so I used that as the date. The work in this case is the name of the site, which is ""Montana Highways", and the publisher is "Self-published" because it is a self-published source. (Normally we don't allow those, and if you were to GAN the article, you'd have to find replacements, but for now, it's fine.)
Last thing besides a little tweaking of links and using the abbreviations was to move the Google Maps reference out of the lead. Since the lead is a summary of the body of an article, I don't use footnotes in a lead at all unless it's a direct quotation or a controversial/counterintuitive statement. Since the junction list table gives the terminal milepost as "134.098", and the mileposts are cited in that table, the rounded off length in the lead doesn't really need its own footnote. Newsletter request[edit]

Can you write up a short paragraph to update our readers on what's going on with Florida? There's already some mention of the topics from WT:USRD in the project news section of the newsletter, so I don't know if that covers everything from the Sunshine State or not as of late. @Imzadi1979: Hi there mate, I'm not really sure that I feel qualified for writing up an article for the Florida part of the project in the newsletter, especially as I have been heavily, heavily focused on state highways to the south of downtown Miami and I don't really know what's going on in the very many other parts of the state. I tend to keep my editing to the highway articles which intersect US Highways: in this case, US 1. The state updates are usually just a brief on what is going on in the state. If no one else is doing much of substance in the state except you, then you are qualified to write a brief on your activities. At times, when I've written the Michigan updates, they've focused on just one area of the state because my editing was focused there, except to deal with well-intentioned/low-quality edits or vandalism elsewhere.
