File source and copyright licensing problem with File:ErnestLucasGuest.jpg[edit]

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:ErnestLucasGuest.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 18:12, 12 April 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 18:12, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Rationale has been added. Thanks FunkyCanute (talk) 16:14, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:E L Guest with C W Meredith.jpg[edit]

Copyright-problem.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:E L Guest with C W Meredith.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 18:12, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Rationale has been added. Thanks FunkyCanute (talk) 16:14, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

RE: Ernest Lucas Guest[edit]

With regards to Ernest Lucas Guest this was a very close one. I was swayed by the lack of citations regarding the First World War and his legal career. As a rule of thumb, every paragraph should have a citation. These are two large sections without citations which is why I rated it as start. So, a few more citations and I can reassess it. London Wikimedia Fundraiser[edit]

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 22:54, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

speedy deletions[edit]

I and other admins have been removing some of your speedy deletion tags. Someone being president of a major company, or being head of a bureau at a major newspaper, indicates importance. Indicating importance is less than notability --any plausible importance is sufficient to pass speedy. Please read WP:CSD before tagging further articles--the requirements must be met exactly.

It is additionally required that when you do place a speedy or other deletion tag, you indicate this in the article summary. DGG ( talk ) 19:24, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Antonio Preto deletion. Adding References[edit]

Hi,

thank you for your contribution. I added some references (sources from newspapers and official website) to Antonio Preto's biography.

I hope everything is ok now.

Please let me know if there are still some changes to be made in order to avoid the deletion.

Proposed deletion of Mira Sasson[edit]

Hi FunkyCanute - Thanks for reading through the Mira Sasson article. Mira and I both work with an organization called Pioneers For A Cure, but I have no direct connection to her. I have two press citations in the article, and I expect to have more citations very soon. I wrote the article because her contribution to the organization has been significant, and her work is increasingly visible because of the high profile of many musicians she has painted for the project, including Ben E. King, Suzanne Vega and Tovah Feldshuh.

Thanks, Jonmadof (talk) 17:42, 24 October 2011 (UTC)Jonmadof

I added the delete tag in accordance with WP:BLPPROD, which requires new biographies of living persons to have at least one reference. Since you've added references, it's fine to remove the tag, as has been done. It's possible that the article might still be nominated for deletion via WP:AfD for lack of notability as per WP:BIO. In that case, you should seek to have it merged into Pioneers For A Cure so that the work on the article is not lost. Often with biographies of living persons, the author writes the article before there are significant references and that often leads to articles being deleted after quite some work has been done. It's usually best to produce the article after you have collected sufficient references. Even if the article is deleted, it can be reinstated if you can show you have reliable sources. See WP:BLPDEL.
I hope that helps.
FunkyCanute (talk) 09:29, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the info! I've found some more references, which I'm going to add to the article.

Best, Jonmadof (talk) 14:53, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Jonmadof

At present (January 2016) both previous references - about her children's books, from "News Junky" [sic] and "PRWeb" - are dead links, and no additional references were ever added. The content about Mira Sasson is unreferenced and appears to be entirely from the Pioneers for a Cure website. Recommend for deletion? -- Deborahjay (talk) 22:32, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited David Hennessy, 3rd Baron Windlesham, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page This Week (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Disambiguation link notification[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited John Moore Caldicott, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Federal Party (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I'm leaving this message as you're listed as a current participant of WikiProject Business. I was informed yesterday that the current World Factoring Yearbook (circa £150) is now free for download as an ebook. It's a matter of filling out this form. I'm not sure if you'll find this useful as a reliable source, but I thought I should let you know that it's freely available online. I apologise in advance if this doesn't interest you! DYK nomination of Julius Achon[edit]

Symbol question.svg Hello! Your submission of Julius Achon at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Presearch (talk) 22:26, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Deletion Without Reason of Reasonable Page[edit]

Hi there. I am responding to addition of a note to my talk page regarding Beijing Institute of Clothing Technology being proposed for deletion. No reason has been given to delete the article, which obviously covers a real institution. I will thank you or your robot not to waste people's time with pointless and unreasoned deletion requests, which truly serve no purpose. prat (talk) 21:06, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

On reflection, my deletion request was perhaps hasty. However, I'd been trawling through the immense backlog of new pages and found a whole bunch of time-wasting, hoax and offensive articles that needed to be marked for deletion, and it seemed to me at first sight that this was a spammy article. The reason given was lack of notability and I have now clarified that it doesn't meet the criteria for non-commercial organisations. I suggest that you cool down a little in your conversations with other editors. The deletion request was at the very least well-intentioned. FunkyCanute (talk) 09:14, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your admission of mistake. May I suggest the basic criteria of a web search prior to requesting the deletion of a page in future? Consider that often it's better to enhance, rename or merge an article than to list it for deletion as the effort of others that ultimately results from a deletion can instead be positively directed as a result and no information is lost. See also AIW. prat (talk) 11:59, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion contested: KyledogFTW[edit]

Hello FunkyCanute, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of KyledogFTW, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not nonsense - there is meaningful content. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. --v/r Electric Catfish (talk) 14:45, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello Electric Catfish, I struggle to see what meaningful content exists on that page! However, I see you've renominated the page for speedy deletion under different criteria, so that should deal with it anyway. Thanks for the link to the CSD criteria. FunkyCanute (talk) 14:50, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
That was an automated message from the CSD Helper Script. G1 only applies to patent nonsense, such as "fghfgh145x1g3s12ghdtr". KyledogFTW isn't patent nonsense, but rather the name of some company. For more on speedy deletion, please see WP: WIHSD. --v/r Electric Catfish (talk) 14:53, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
That was useful, thanks. FunkyCanute (talk) 15:05, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Template:Did you know nominations/Mihal Zallari[edit]

FunkyCanute, it appears from the history of this DYK nomination that you did some reviewing, yet your dated signature appears nowhere on the page. Your review[edit]

Hi, per your review of Bob Steele filmography I have linked, categorised and referenced the page further. I've only removed the orphan and cats tag as they're straight forward. Am not so sure about the refs, as I only have one Westerns related book to cite from, and most Westerns websites are generally naffy fansites these days, I don't fancy trawling through Google for reliable sites at the moment. Can you take a second look and untag or let me know what you think, please. Cheers, Ma®©usBritish{chat} 17:26, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello... I've changed the tag to {{ref improve}}, as it's better but still needs more (inline) citations. Cheers FunkyCanute (talk) 19:46, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
Alright, makes sense. Thanks, Ma®©usBritish{chat} 02:43, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Milo Yiannopoulos[edit]

Two sources were previously cited making it clear that Milo Yiannopoulos dropped out of Cambridge in his second year without graduating. This is information is just as relevant as the information that he dropped out of Manchester, which is permitted. Easier to delete Cambridge altogether rather than leave misleading impression that he graduated? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beachread (talkcontribs) 12:29, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

About deletion of the page Aligarh Muslim University Malappuram Centre.[edit]

Thanks for informing about my article status. The page which i have created not for Aligarh Muslim University. It is for the newly opened Centre for the University at Malappuram Dist., Kerala (http://www.amu.ac.in/centres/amucentres.htm). So there was no page regarding for the Centre. So I would like to craete a page for the Centre apart from the details given in the main University(Aligarh University) wiki page. The new Centre is working with only two courses and a lot of people especially students those who seeking for admission are very keen to know about the Centre. So please let me know about the possibilities of this for creating a new article for the new Centre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amupublic (talkcontribs) 05:18, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Ernest Lucas Guest[edit]

Hi FunkyCanute, I don't think I have time for a full review right now, but here are some thoughts I think will be helpful. I think the article is on the whole pretty good, but there are some issues that will have to be tended to before it is likely to get to GA status.

  1. In the infobox: I wouldn't wikilink "Minister of Finance", unless it's to an article specifically relevant to the Rhodesian/Zimbabwean post (in this case not). His place of birth was Grahamstown, Cape Colony (not Cape Province or South Africa, as neither existed in 1882). I wouldn't wikilink "British" under "nationality"; I think almost everybody knows what "British" is. Under the list of children, they are listed on separate lines, so the commas are not needed. I would put St. Andrew's College rather than just St. Andrew's. I wouldn't call him a "statesman", as this could be seen as a peacock term; perhaps better to put "politician" as his profession, and later give examples of sources describing him as a statesman. His allegiance would be better and more simply formatted as {{flag|British Empire}}. His years of service needs an endash (–) rather than the hyphen that is presently there. I wouldn't render the names of the wars he fought in in bold.
  2. Lead: I would change "statesman" to "politician" (see above). I would give his place of birth as Grahamstown, Cape Colony (see above). "In between the two wars" could be confusing, as for many this will imply the First and Second World Wars. I would either rephrase this or simply change it to "in between those two wars". For me, "slightly injured" sounds not quite right; perhaps rephrase this. The time seems to jump around a bit in the fourth paragraph: it goes from 1928 to 1946 to 1948, then back to 1938 again before discussing the Second World War and what came after. I would rephrase this paragraph to something along the lines of: "He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1928 as a member of Coghlan's Rhodesia Party, representing the constituency of Charter, which he held until 1946. In June 1938, he became Minister of Mines and Public Works in Godfrey Huggins' government. During the Second World War, Guest was Minister for Air and administered the Rhodesia Air Training Group. After the war he was also Minister of Defence, Minister of Finance and Leader of the House. At the 1946 elections he won in Salisbury Gardens, and held that seat until his retirement from office in 1948." The last paragraph of the lead looks fine.
  3. Early life: I would rephrase the first sentence to "Ernest Lucas Guest was born on 20 August 1882 in Grahamstown, Cape Colony (in modern South Africa's Eastern Cape province)." I wouldn't dot "Mr" (keep this in mind throughout the article). Apart from that this basically looks good.
  4. Military career and Legal career: All of this generally looks very good, but keep in mind what I said above about confusing the reader with the time. At the end of the military career section—which is very well done, incidentally—in 1918 (or so), we jump back to the early 1900s. I would look into perhaps combining the two sections so there is a single cohesive and flowing narrative. I suspect that perhaps this was the case before, and that the two subjects were split: it is mentioned in the WW1 section that "Coghlan put no obstacle in his way", even though the article has not yet introduced Charles Coghlan (excluding the lead section). But as I say, this is all generally good so far as basic content goes. I would give a very brief explanation of what the 1820 Settlers were if you're going to mention that Townsend was one of them; perhaps "one of the 1820 Settlers in the Eastern Cape" or something like that.
  5. Politics: Again, this all looks pretty good on a whole, but one issue I notice is the lack of page numbers for the 1974 Gale source, on which this particular section leans rather heavily. Though I am personally inclined to trust that the information is present in that book, you will need to provide page numbers and so forth where this source is cited (look particularly at the "Cabinet Minister" section). "The risk to the colony's future prosperity of a full Rhodesian formation being wiped out, dictated against the creation of such a unit" does not appear to me to make grammatical sense, I would rephrase if I were you. "The Rhodesian Air Training Group called for submissions from the public for suggested designs for the Squadrons' crests"; why not "The Rhodesian Air Training Group invited the public to submit suggested crest designs for each of the Squadrons" or something like that? "After the war" section: lots of very short, stubby paragraphs; I would look at merging some of these if I were you.
  6. Family: "Ernest Guest married Edith May, daughter of Thomas Jones of Singapore. She had been brought up by an uncle in Johannesburg, where the two met." Not completely clear; this could be read as implying she met her own father (from Singapore) in Jo'burg, having been estranged from him. I would say "Ernest Guest married Edith May, daughter of Thomas Jones of Singapore. The couple met in Johannesburg, where she had been brought up by an uncle" or similar. I would not bold the names of the children. "Gwen Guest" has nothing attributed to her, is this deliberate? If there is nothing noteworthy, "Gwen Guest was Sir Ernest's first daughter" or "first child" would do perfectly fine. Overall this section looks good in terms of actual content.
  7. Honours and death both look good. I'd make the penny red stamp a tad smaller (remove the "px" parameter, let it just be standard size).
  8. Legacy section: While this is true, it is unsourced and could be seen as puffery ("... one of the greatest engineering achievements in world history.") I would look at this if I were you.
  9. See also section: You don't need this. I'd remove it.
  10. Categories: I see he's in the lawyers category: why not "Rhodesian lawyers"?

I hope all of this is helpful. I look forward to having another look at this article soon. Have a great weekend and I hope you are well. Cliftonian (talk) 08:30, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Cliftonian, that is all very helpful: many thanks! I've already implemented most of it. The tricky bit is the organisation of the material. At the moment, I've followed the approach taken in, for example, Winston Churchill, which is similarly thematic, hence military, legal and political sections. I think this can work and is possibly stronger than a purely chronological narrative. I just need to do some tweaking at the start of the Legal career section, to make it clear that we're taking a brief step back. For the political section, I have Gale 1974 to hand, so I'll make the citations more precise. I very much appreciate your time on this. FunkyCanute (talk) 17:42, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Funky, sorry it's been a while since I came back to this. Here are a few more thoughts (just from a quick re-reading) that I think might help prepare this for GA:
  1. In the Second Boer War section, I'd merge the third and fourth paragraphs
  2. I'd move the King's Royal Rifle Corps picture to the right (remove the "left" parameter from the file code). Put an endash (–) rather than the hyphen presently in "c. 1895-1914".
  3. "On 4 August 1914, Southern Rhodesia was at war with Germany." Perhaps try to make clear that Britain was at war with Germany, and so Southern Rhodesia by extension was as well. Also make clear that he had moved to Rhodesia between the Boer and First World Wars, as the article at present jumps from the end of the Boer War (when he is still based in the Cape) to the start of the First World War (by which time he is well established in Rhodesia).
  4. Lamberts Bay → Lambert's Bay
  5. "Coghlan put no obstacle in his way and his wife was agreeable." (in the First World War section); Coghlan hasn't been introduced yet in the article, say who he is ("business partner Charles Coghlan" or similar). Also I would make clear it's Guest's wife rather than Coghlan's who was agreeable (perhaps "His wife was agreeable, and business partner Charles Coghlan put no obstacle in his way." ?)
  6. The 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron and 266 (Rhodesia) Squadron sections have lots of stubby paragraphs in them, look at merging these
  7. Primum Agmen in Caelo (The Vanguard in the Sky): just a formatting suggestion here, Primum Agmen in Caelo should be italics as it's a foreign phrase (specifically Latin, you might want to say so in the article). The English translation should not be italicised, rather it should be in quotation marks, ie Primum Agmen in Caelo (Latin for "The Vanguard in the Sky")
  8. "a Matabele word Hlabezulu": good, but "Matabele" actually specifically refers to the people (it comes from amaNdebele, the plural form of the singular Ndebele). The vernacular word for the language's name is more accurately isiNdebele, or "Sindebele" in English.
  9. I'd add an inline reference where you say that Gwen Guest was the first daughter
  10. I'd remove the box with the portal links in, it isn't really necessary and it buggers up the formatting of the reference list
  11. Similar to the Gale 1974 issue above, I see some Gale 1973 references without page numbers
I hope these are helpful and look forward to looking through this article again soon. I hope that you are well. Cliftonian (talk) 14:10, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Very helpful, many thanks! I'll be able to work on changes later this week: busy but well, thanks! I trust all is well with you too.FunkyCanute (talk) 13:55, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

GAN[edit]

I've started the review - feel free to comment as we go along. This is my first attempt at reviewing a potential GA and it is a step that I have not taken lightly. I'll probably be a bit more picky than a lot of reviewers but just tell me if you think I'm going too far. There is a very experienced reviewer keeping an eye on things because I made that a prerequisite of having a go. You have a good article there and hopefully it will be a Good Article before long. - Sitush (talk) 21:21, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Many thanks, Sitush. I'm getting on to it right away. It will probably take a couple of days to sort through everything. It's a learning experience for me too, since it's the first article I've put through this process. FunkyCanute (talk) 11:05, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
I've had GAs that took a few hours and others that took ages. As long as some progress appears to be made, it really doesn't matter if it takes weeks (although I'd hope that it doesn't!). The problem comes when activity seems to stop for several days. I'd let you know if I thought this was a concern and, obviously, we all have real lives so don't panic. - Sitush (talk) 11:10, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Bufo (company)[edit]

Why do you think there's COI? PamD 23:30, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

The article creator appears to have registered almost purely for the purpose of creating this article. Also, the language used is rather 'PR' in nature ie quite a lot of 'puffery': has produced several; has produced, among others. Finally, the sources are the company's official website, first, and then IMDb. FunkyCanute (talk) 13:33, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
Don't most editors start off by creating an article on a topic they're interested in? And those are the obvious two sources anyone would use, surely, lifting phrases like "has produced several" from official website or whatever? Seems scant evidence. Not that it matters much, was just curious on what basis you'd tagged it. PamD 13:46, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
True. FunkyCanute (talk) 13:51, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

TVCatchup.com edits[edit]

Hi I notice that you have been doing many edits on TVCatchup, which may I add have improved the page no end. I am not very experienced in Wikipedia editing, but I seem to have gathered that edits should have references that can be cross checked is that correct?

The reason I ask is because I keep reverting a edit on there where someone has put a reference to editing on a forum page of TVCatchup and I am trying to understand how that fits into Wikipedias guidelines and I have reverted them twice now but I really do not want to get into a silly tit for tat edit as all I am trying to do is learn and edit correctly.

Is there something I am doing wrong or is there something that can be done about people editing hearsay on the pages,

Sorry for asking but I really am at a loss to know what to do about this and as I said the last thing I want is s silly feud over this.

Best Regards,Implyme (talk) 13:15, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Indeed. Will keep an eye out and advise the editor of guidelines should it recur. FunkyCanute (talk) 09:16, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi FunkyCanute; I'm afraid we've already had to turn people away, and we kept the signups open longer than ever before, so I can't really bend the rules for you. I do recommend signing up to receive the newsletter so you can hear what's going on; keep an eye on the WikiCup talk page, too, as there's often news of other competitions, requests for collaborations and ideas for interesting articles. You're certainly more than welcome to be a part of the WikiCup community, even if you've missed signups this time around. J Milburn (talk) 22:48, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

London Metropolitan University Students Union[edit]

I'd advise against merging the LMUSU article with the LMU article as the SU is a different and legally separate organisation. It would be akin to merging the RMT entry with the TfL entry, and would misrepresent both parties. A link from one to the other is more appropriate and I could urge our new SU team to update and upgrade their wiki entry.

Regards,

Phil Chapman Director of External Relations London Metropolitan University

WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...[edit]

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Voting for the Military historian and Military newcomer of the year now open![edit]

Hello, why is that? I tagged it with multiple issues when I reviewed it, some of which have subsequently been remedied, although crucially still no sources. The article has been reviewed. Perhaps you feel it should be deleted, in which case, surely follow one of the several procedures. FunkyCanute (talk) 09:41, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter[edit]

Trophy.png

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Hoylake Urban District[edit]

Be slightly patient - I am developing the research on Urban districts formed in England and Wales 1894–95 piecemeal - and will get back to adding the categories. Jackiespeel (talk) 23:13, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

My apologies for the hastiness. It helps, even with stub articles, to try to follow the Wikipedia Manual of Style and to include at least one reference, so that it doesn't get confused (I don't confuse it) for the many nonsense articles that pop up. Interesting project. If I can help, let me know. FunkyCanute (talk) 10:37, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
I prefer 'chasing up the information' - the intention is to copy and paste the categories at the end for those that 'other interested parties' haven't been alerted to ('category of topics one does not know one is interested in'). Feel free to join in.

'The history of local government' is relatively untouched generally - and local councilors can be somewhat of a more diverse bunch than central government politicians (see the London wiki[1] for some examples) - though mostly only sufficiently notable for a regional/local wiki rather than WP. Jackiespeel (talk) 11:25, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Anyone looking for a pet project can have some enjoyment researching local government bodies - not quite at the 'here be (equivalent of mapmaker's) dragons' - adjusting for significance probably 'here be lizards' (not being shapeshifters). Jackiespeel (talk) 22:31, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Very well done on the promotion of this to GA class. The article looks in great shape! If you consider taking it to A-class or FA, please let me know and I'll try to lend a hand in any way I can. Keep up the good work! :) Cliftonian (talk) 16:19, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Tigist Tufa, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Athletics. WikiCup 2015 May newsletter[edit]

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:32, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Rage[edit]

Hello FunkyCanute, after some research we at the BFI believe the Copyright year for Rage is 2000. It states 2000 in all sources we have, including our central collections database: [[2]]. I have changed the date in the text description but I'm unsure how to change the URL itself. Can you help, possibly? Stephen McConnachie (talk) 15:48, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

@Stephen McConnachie: Thanks. It seems that it is most often listed as a 1999 film. The listing on Screenonline has it as Rage (1999), the year it was first shown at TIFF and subsequently at LFF. I'm trying to see if there is any further guidance around this on WP but haven't found anything yet. I won't change the article title until that's clear. I'm also changing the date back to 1999 to match. I've nominated the article for Did you know and would like to keep things simple for now. I hope that all makes sense. I'll make a note on the Talk page too. FunkyCanute (talk) 16:15, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi there. The dates of festival screenings shouldn't really be considered authoritative RE the official dates of film as a work - they often predate official release substantially. In our ontology we consider the Copyright date to be the privileged date of a film work, as it is universal across all territories (release dates are multiple, and often the 'official' release date is that in the main country of production, even where that post-dates the first actual release somewhere. It's also stated onscreen, unlike release date. Finally, it has a legal status. For those reasons we defer always to Copyright date. In our database, we capture Copyright date only where it is seen from primary source - ie onscreen. In our record for Rage that is the case, Copyright: 2000 (cited alongside other onscreen data in our record). So that certainly came from onscreen. Screenonline is incorrect, I'm afraid! (I'll request a change based on our data, but I don't think SO is being updated). If you want to wait for more evidence that's fine of course, but for the BFI this is certainly a 2000 film without any room for doubt, SO error notwithstanding! All the best Stephen McConnachie (talk) 13:41, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Rage (1999 film)[edit]

The addition of the poster caused the table of cast to be pushed down. Why can't it be re-formatted to bulleted list? The table is used at Plot section. I fail to see the logic of making the cast box part of the section. Can't the plot and the cast list be re-separated? --George Ho (talk) 21:20, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

@George Ho: Having an entire section dedicated to a short list is not as tidy as the table format. I had originally done the former but after seeing other articles (for example American Beauty), I did the work to create the table. There is work to be done on the article, after which the table will look tidier again. Thanks again for the poster image. FunkyCanute (talk) 11:37, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Well, you can see The Joy Luck Club (film) as an example. --George Ho (talk) 23:51, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
@George Ho: Indeed, there are different approaches. I was following the approach of a Featured Article. It looks much tidier and avoids the issue of having a section consisting of just a list, which is - in any case - generally frowned upon. FunkyCanute (talk) 10:52, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
