Translitteration in Niqqud#Demonstration

Hello, while contributing on the French WP on the equivalent of ISO 259 and on fr:Transcription de la Society of Biblical Literature (=SBL transcription), I noticed that the transliteration you introduced a long time ago in Niqqud#Demonstration uses ê for בֵי, and so it is not the "ISO 259" shown in Romanization of Hebrew#Table and it is more like in The SBL Handbook of Style, but not quite since it also uses é for long בֶ and ệ for בֶי. So do you remember what standard that was, is it described somewhere on WP or on line, which could help specify some things in WP articles? I wish I could remember. To be honest, I was editing that back when I was still just beginning to grasp the necessity of the chain of reliable references. I can't remember the exact standard I got it from, but I remember that qatan vowels were i e a o u (sere and holem could not be qatan), gadhol vowels were ī ē ā ō ū (I can't remember what seghol gadhol was), and male vowels were î ê ệ ậ â ô û (with underdots for seghol and pathah). It's possible I first saw this convention used at Omniglot, but their Hebrew page has also changed a great deal since I studied it, and no longer shows transcriptions like these. I found your name at Category:User js (probably because you posted the corresponding userbox on your user page), in the level-unspecified list of JavaScript programmers.

I was wondering how experienced you are at JavaScript, and whether you might be interested in getting involved with developing user scripts, hobnobbing with other JavaScript programmers, and organizing and improving JavaScript articles and support pages.

Look, I'm hardly new to Wikipedia. I just don't always leave edit summaries, especially when I'm editing technical issues with a technical frame of mind. Exactly my point. I figured you were doing something constructive but I know nothing of those pronunciation guides. We get a lot of nationalist cranks at the Ukraine article so if I'm not sure what's being done, it's usually vandalism. Most countervandalism is reverting anything that doesn't seem to be obviously constructive, especially when reverting in subject areas I know nothing about. I template the regulars because it's a neutral way to express the sentiment (and Twinkle makes it easy). If you'd leave edit summaries we'd have assurance of what you're doing, which is all I'm asking for. I hope that helps. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:11, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
Oh. Well, I guess that's a reasonable concern, and I apologize for provoking your attention in such a way. And yes, I did notice that another editor vandalized Zaporizhia by removing the Ukrainian language data and replacing it with Russian language data. (After I reverted that edit, I edited the article to include both languages' data anyway.) To be honest, when I'm in a technical frame of mind (template maintenance, linguistics data, etc.), it's not always easy for me to shift gears to make a plain English comment in the edit summary. Sometimes it's just easier to do technical work or make comments. When I try to do both at the same time, it involves a greater cognitive load than the sum of both tasks independently, because the gear shift forces me to put away one set of mental notes and prepare another set. I like to call it a "mental cache miss", and it's a bane to my editing productivity. - Gilgamesh (talk) 19:34, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Here is a heads up, in case you are interested in user script development...

Dear Gilgamesh,

Since you didn't express disinterest in your reply to my message above, I thought you might like to know what I've been up to on the JavaScript front, in case you want to check it out...

I'm in the process of building scripts for viewing outlines and for outline development. They use a lot of techniques that would be applicable to script writing in general (such as setting up clickable menu items, etc.). To make it easier for others to follow along with how the scripts work, I've provided extensive explanations of the source code on their talk pages. They might be helpful for someone wanting to improve their JavaScript skills, but they are also far from perfect, so if you notice anything that could be improved (such as my approach, programming style, etc.) I'd be very interested in your feedback.

So far, there is:

  • User:The Transhumanist/OutlineViewAnnotationToggler.js – this one provides a menu item to turn annotations on/off, so you can view lists bare when you want to (without annotations). When done, it will work on (the embedded lists of) all pages, not just outlines. Currently it is limited to outlines only, for development and testing purposes. It supports hotkey activation/deactivation of annotations, but that feature currently lacks an accurate viewport location reset for retaining the location on screen that the user was looking at. The program also needs an indicator that tells the user it is still on. Otherwise, you might wonder why a bare list has annotations in edit mode, when you go in to add some. :) Though it is functional as is. Check it out. After installing it, look at Outline of cell biology, and press ⇧ Shift+Alt+a. And again.
  • User:The Transhumanist/RedlinksRemover.js – strips out entries in outlines that are nothing but a redlink. It removes them right out of the tree structure. But only end nodes (i.e., not parent nodes, which we need to keep). It delinks redlinks that have non-redlink offspring, or that have or are embedded in an annotation. It does not yet recognize entries that lack a bullet (it treats those as embedded).

It is my objective to build a set of scripts that fully automate the process of creating outlines. This end goal is a long way off (AI-complete?). In the meantime, I hope to increase productivity as much as I can. Fifty percent automation would double an editor's productivity. I think I could reach 80% automation (a five-fold increase in productivity) within a couple years.

There's more:

  • User:The Transhumanist/StripSearchInWikicode.js – another script, which strips search results down to a bare list of links, and inserts wikilink formatting for ease of insertion of those links into lists. This is useful for gathering links for outlines. I'd like this script to sort its results. So, if you know how, or know someone who knows how, please let me know. A more immediate problem is that the output is interlaced with CR/LFs. I can't figure out how to get rid of them. Stripping them out in WikEd via regex is a tedious extra step. It would be nice to track them down and remove them with the script.

IPA transcription of Marshallese words

Hello. I see you have contributed a lot to Marshallese pronunciation and I was wondering if you could help me with the broad and narrow IPA transcriptions for the following words:

  • aere {hayẹrẹy}
  • kōdọ {kedaw}
  • ḷañ {ḷag}
  • utọr {witarʷ}
  • barijat

They are Pacific storm names submitted by the Marshall Islands. I'd like to add them into Thai Wiktionary, but I have no idea how to convert the symbols used in MED into the IPA. --Potapt (talk) 23:06, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

What's the MED phoneme data for "barijat"? Just {barijat}, same as the spelling? If that is the case...
I'm not fluent or conversational in the language by any means.

According to the Typhoon Committee, "barijat" means "coastal areas impacted by waves/winds". I looked up MED again and found "parijet {pariyjẹt}" which means "lagoon shore; lagoon beach; seacoast; seashore". I think they may refer to the same word.
