one thing you forgot: the link to the deWP article. I added it at the end. We put it in as an ordinary link, in the form [[de:Kurt Erdmann]], but located by itself at the end it makes the inter-wiki links in both directions automatically.

Hello, HajjiBaba. I'm happy to see the great work you've been doing on Ulama, but I have a concern about your citations. Though I'm not sure about this, it looks like you may be borrowing them from the source rather than citing the source you're using. We have a guideline on that, WP:SAYWHERE. It applies to all sources, but it's especially consequential for primary source citations. If you're citing a primary source for a synthetic or interpretative statement, it will look like a violation of WP:PRIMARY to other editors, and the content will be removed, which would be unfortunate. Generally, in an article which touches on potentially difficult and controversial issues, I think it is appropriate to include information about primary sources (cited after a secondary source, not doing original research). Knowing that the text is still far from being perfect, I'd like to kindly ask for some patience from your end, for the time being. Hi again. I think you would find useful some texts devoted specifically to the subject of ulama, since it's not always obvious how to disentangle it from related topics. The best ones I know are Ulama in EI2 and the entry by the same title in The Princeton Encyclopedia of Islamic Political Thought by Muhammad Qasim Zaman, which is also available in another Princeton title. Zaman has written an oft-cited book on contemporary ulama, and a chapter on that topic in vol. 6 of the New Cambridge History of Islam. Among general surveys, there's a nice discussion of these topics in Berkey's Formation of Islam (particularly chapters 13 and 21-23). I would also recommend Wael Hallaq's recent coverage of related subjects in Sharī'a: Theory, Practice, Transformations. He condensed and adapted this book for a general audience in An Introduction to Islamic Law, which has a very handy overview of different pre-modern ulama roles right at the outset. This is a somewhat personal perspective from a towering figure in this field. Knut S. Vikør's book covers much of the same material in a more dispassionate textbook style. It looks like you have good access to academic sources, but if not, I could help you with some of the above. I'm working on some related material as part of my ongoing rewrite of Sharia.

I share your appreciation of detailed bibliographical information, but it's worth remembering that citations on WP have a particular purpose, which is to help our fellow editors verify that our text accurately summarizes a RS (and change it if it does not). To be clear, I'm pretty confident that your text reflects the sources you've used. I just want to point out the parts that wouldn't look properly sourced to another observer, so that they aren't removed for that reason later. There are still a few of those, and I'll add some tags to flag the problematic bits shortly.

Ok, I've added some tags, which should be just a matter of quick fixes. In order to see which source a statement comes from, one normally looks to the next ref. When one comes to the end of the paragraph without seeing one, the text looks unsourced. When a pointer to a primary source B intervenes in the middle of general statements sourced to A, an extra ref is needed to make that clear: General statement.[ref A] Statement about primary source B.[ref B, as cited in A]. General statement 2.[ref A] Also, be aware that citing dozens of book pages for a simple statement looks puzzling and is likely to prompt suspicions of WP:SYN and unspecific tags,[not specific enough to verify] but it's up to you whether to take that risk. Sufism in Ulama[edit]

Hello HajjiBaba,

I saw one of your additions in Ulama regarding Islamic Mysticism which says that it was not a pure Islamic based belief but influenced by eastern Christianity monasticism and originated in Iraq and Syria and not in the Hejaz in Arabia. I would like to ask you how true is this and your thoughts about it, because I studied Islamic history and I still deeply confused about the origins of Sufism, since most of the recent sources I saw they use to reject the external influences and go to a pure Islamic based beliefs that originated almost at the time of Muhammad. We can find this statements in other pages of Wikipedia too...and Malik Abbas, the founder of the Maliki school of the traditions of the people of Medina, that was the adversary of the people of Iraq, was a great lover of Sufi practitioners...so I'm deeply confused and would like to have this more clear and you seems to be interested too in Islamic history.
