Thanks for your message

Hello HopsonRoad, Wanted to thank you for your invitation to create an account rather than being an anonymous IP fixing stuff around here :)

Though I would have to deny your offer, since I have an account in Lithuanian Wiki page and I think that one (name is: Scribe) is somewhat enough for me. For different languages I would prefer having my small changes in IP mode. Thanks :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.28.233.171 (talk) 14:49, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

For XC skiing and other lofty endeavors

The Barnstar of High Culture
As anyone on Camel's Hump (who isn't looking toward the Whites) can tell, your VT edits cover high ground indeed. Thank you! FourViolas (talk) 04:56, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
I very much appreciate your recognition, FourViolas! Camel's Hump, among Vermont's 4,000-footers is an annual destination of mine! Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 14:22, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
I very much appreciate your edits! See you on the Forest City trail sometime.FourViolas (talk) 16:25, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

New skiing navbar

I've taken my first crack at creating a navbar template, and I've added to the bottom of skiing. Check it out! Could be useful to add to various skiing articles? Or maybe we don't like templates? I'm not sure yet. --Cornellier (talk) 23:07, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

I'm fine with taxonomy, as achieved by such a template, Cornellier. I suggest adding Paralympic cross-country skiing and Para-alpine skiing. It's probably more informative than the transportation template at the bottom of Cross-country skiing. Go for it! User:HopsonRoad 23:39, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Good article review

Hi Hopson! I am willing to give this a go, but am now heads down in a theology essay for my degree so it may have to wait a little while! Cheers. --Bermicourt (talk) 10:57, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! and Godspeed on your essay, Bermicourt, Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 13:50, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Nantucket revert

Both the spread sheet and the article about the lighthouse say it was removed. - Denimadept (talk) 04:27, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for checking in, Denimadept. Perhaps I didn't see the obvious. I'll leave that with you! User:HopsonRoad 21:36, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Forces on sails, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Vectors. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Re: Support, oppose or other?

I know I didn't write that :) I don't really like those tags because they make these discussion look like votes, which they really aren't. It's exactly because I'm aware of the subtlety that you just described (religion vs. religiosity) that I'm opposed to a mandatory inclusion of a strict, bold opinion in the first place :) --Joy [shallot] (talk) 09:06, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Fair point! Thanks for your reply, Joy. Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 13:27, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Cross-country skiing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-country_skiing Hi. I wasn't logged in when I made the edit, I just added a missing bracket to end the parenthesis. Why did you revert it? Now it's missing again. Best regards 109.247.37.112 (talk) 20:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

My mistake. Thank you for calling that to my attention. Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 20:45, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
No problem. I see now that I should log in, even for minor edits. Thanks Stavol2 (talk) 11:41, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Forces on sails

Thanks for helping out with the forces on sails article. While my contributions to it have been minimal, it's been on my watchlist for several years in the category of "man, we gotta fix this thing someday." I strongly encourage you to start fresh with a clean slate. No one owns this article so please be bold with your draft.

Thanks, also, for the compliments about Lift (force). I'm one of the main editors for that article and did a major re-org about five years ago along the lines of what you are proposing. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lift_%28force%29&diff=301448262&oldid=299316274 for the diff. Mr. Swordfish (talk) 14:59, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your encouragement, Mr. Swordfish, I'm hoping to respect the contributions of User:Bcebul and enlist his aid in the project. Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 15:06, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Forces on sails invitation

Many thanks for your invitation to take part in the discussion on the Forces on sails article. I assume this is down to my Wikiproject Sailing membership, as I don't recall editing the article in the past.

Right now I don't have the time to invest a lot of effort in the article, but it is certainly one which I will put at the top of the list. Having taken a quick read through, it seems quite terrifyingly abstract for the most part, and in a way that makes me think that the authors were probably students working on it as a way of improving their own knowledge rather than real experts... although perhaps I shouldn't make these assumptions without spending the time going through the history. That aside, a lot of the equations and workthroughs seem very inelegantly presented, and often far too detailed for an article of this type. A lot of the diagrams seem almost deliberately complex. The whole thing needs condensing down in to something which could be read and understood by someone with, say, an average physics/engineering degree level understanding of fluid mechanics, and no more than an hour or so to spend digesting it. It is a long old way from that! Yes, I have the knowledge to get my head round it, but it would represent hours and hours of work to read and understand it. That needs to change! Unfortunately, the work to condense it would be many hours more than you would need just to understand it...

You're right to try to get this article in shape, and I'm glad someone is trying. In a few months I will have some time to invest in it, and I hope I can be of some use then. Interesting things look to be happening in the sandbox, and when I start editing I will make sure not to duplicate effort, or undo anyone's hard work.

Best wishes,

MatthewHaywood (talk) 22:25, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for checking in, MatthewHaywood. Part of the challenge there is that one editor keeps creating more detail and I expect keeps increasing a sense of ownership. So, an observation about where things should head at Talk:Forces on sails#Reorganization? would not be amiss, at this time, even if you are not in a position to put your shoulder to the millstone. Cheers,

Meteorites

Hello HopsonRoad, how is the maple syrup flowing? Vermont, right? Hey, I would like you to read a discussion that I had with Geogene. It is last article on my talk page. It pertains to you. Since we worked on that mmm thing last week together... Thanks! GEOGOZZGEOGOZZ (talk) 20:10, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for directing me there. I have no expertise in the matter, so I'll leave it to you two to achieve consensus. BTW the maple syrup flows from containers, year round, after it is boiled down from sap, the season for which is now over with the budding of the maple trees. ;-) Cheers,User:HopsonRoad 01:25, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Brattleboro meetup

Hi! I saw that your mentioned living in Vermont. I am going to be visiting the Brattleboro in May, before I move there in August and I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in doing a Wikimedia meetup there during my May visit. If you are interested, it would be great if you responding at the event page at Wikipedia:Meetup/Brattleboro to help me schedule such a meetup! Sadads (talk) 18:45, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

Vermontish topics

Hi nice work on the skiing articles. Based in Montreal, I take a keen interest in my neighbourhood, even if it is across the border... I've been working on Isle La Motte, Adirondack Mountains, and Adirondack Park, and would welcome your thoughts, especially on the latter two. Viz should there be two articles, how to divide them up, etc. --Cornellier (talk) 03:57, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words, Cornellier. I looked at the two ADK articles—a topic dear to my heart—and feel that they are sufficiently distinct to warrant separate articles. One is geographic and physical, the other is a human institution. The mountains would remain if we were not longer here, whereas the park would cease to exist. I'll check in later on those topics. Hi HopsonRoad, I've noticed you're quite interested in improving Foundation of Moldavia so I thought I'd let you know that it's GA is currently on hold due to fails in two sections (1a and 3b) - the article is not written concisely, and goes into too much detail to be read easily. The article has seven days to make improvements as necessary before I finish my review. samtar {t} 14:28, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for welcome; template question

Hello,

Thanks for the welcome you added to my IP's talk-page. Do you know anything about this? 217.46.75.11 (talk) 11:42, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

No, unfortunately, that's above my degree of WP sophistication! User:HopsonRoad 13:46, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Me too, without study, though it feels like a computery kind of thing an online encyclopedia could/should be able to do. Thanks for your reply. 217.46.75.11 (talk) 16:59, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The OFFICIAL term IS "Unenrolled", for "no political affiliation" in the Bay State=...

Dear HopsonRoad:

The PIPE Here...I've voted in Massachusetts since 1976, and if a prospective voter in the Bay State does NOT select a political party to vote for in a primary election here — OR wants to revert to an "unaffiliated" status after signing up for a "party vote" IN a primary election — the legal term in the Bay State for an "unaffiliated" voter status, in regards to political parties in elections IS Unenrolled, as shown on election documents and ballots here, so I'm definitely speaking from nearly four decades of voting experience.

You MIGHT want to check here, and see for yourself when you've got the time.

Apologies if you didn't know beforehand...the Bay State DOES have its peculiarities, about many things.

Thank you and Happy Holidays, The PIPE (talk) 15:43, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, The PIPE. It's even clearer at Massachusetts Directory of Political Parties and Designations. I agree that you have highlighted the correct term of art for Massachusetts, however the term "unaffiliated" still speaks to a broader group of readers, who would puzzle, as I did about "enrolled". Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 17:34, 21 December 2015 (UTC

Unenrolled vs. unaffiliated

Hi PIPE, your latest addition to Nantucket puzzled me, i.e. "as stated on ballots issued in Massachusetts communities". I appreciate that candidates have a party affiliation on ballots and that "Unenrolled" is next to the names of those, who might otherwise be designated "Independent." What puzzles me, is why this might be a relevant footnote to a statistic on the political alignment of voters. Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 03:55, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Dear HopsonRoad:

The PIPE Here again - it's primarily because, as I've been TRYING to educate you about, that in Bay State elections, a VOTER also selects a party affiliation when they register to vote - an especially important thing to do before a PRIMARY election, the only place where it generally has any relevance here - and THE choices available are "Democrat", "Republican" OR "Unenrolled", in those exact terms. An "unenrolled" voter in the Bay State can choose either a Democratic OR Republican ballot in a primary, while a voter that's sticking with the "blue-D" or "red-R" all the time only gets that party's primary ballot here. It is ALSO usual practice in Bay State primary elections, when one is through voting and usually registers as an "Unenrolled" voter, to PROMPTLY change back to an "Unenrolled" status right after voting, which can be done right AT the polls on Election Day. That's something I've done for decades, over and over again, and is COMPLETELY normal to do in Bay State elections, for Bay State voters!

I DID notice you're from Vermont...are you interested in your own senator's run for the Presidency in any way yet? It's just that I like him myself, for the most part!

Here's hoping that you're starting to understand the importance and relevance of that "Unenrolled" status in Bay State elections!

Thanks and Yours Sincerely, The PIPE (talk) 15:56, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

I see you reverted this edit at Monhegan, Maine. What's a telephone "exchange"? Is this a vandal? That editor has made a number of similar edits on other city articles. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:46, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Magnolia677, I think that they are good-faith, but naive edits. An area code reflects a large population and can be of note and interest. An exchange is the next identifier down in the telephone number hierarchy, corresponding to a town or neighborhood. The hierarchy in North America is (3-digit area code) 3-digit exchange4-digit telephone number or (XXX) YYY–ZZZZ. The edits should be reverted, but go gentle on the person making them.
