waga/wa ga

I know that "ga" was used like "no" in the olden days, but I think this case is different, because the kanji used in "wa ga" is read as "ware" in cases where it is not read as "waga". Of course, I might be wrong, but I don't think that kanji is ever used as "wa" and not followed by "ga"... If you can provide an example, I'll stand corrected. Of course, maybe one could consider "ware" to be "wa" + "re", especially because in ye olden days, they were very slack with okuri-gana, but this would be new to me.

I changed the "su" to a "zu" because I saw the ten-ten on the kanji poem's "ga". It doesn't matter to me if the kanji version uses ten-ten or not, but I do think it should be consistent. Probably the best thing would be to have all the ten-ten in, since the kanji version is supposed to look like modern Japanese. --Carl 06:20, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Dagger symbol

I see that Kenkō has an article, but that Tsurezuregusa is red-linked, so you will have to write an article for it. ;-) The only thing that I know about the work are the 15 pages on it in Donald Keene's book on early Japanese literature "Seeds in the Heart", but he also wrote a translation of the work. Qing Ming Jie in mainland China

I'm fairly certain that Qingming is not a statutory holiday in mainland China. I'm not currently in China but I asked a few Chinese friends to verify my memory. A quick google also suggests that Qingming as a statutory holiday has only been proposed in mainland. Apologies for not verifying its status in HK, Macau and Taiwan before editing. Malbone Street Wreck

Kitty, what is the nature of the Japanese services in the two crashes cited?

Rapid transit means a metro, or something like it. If the lines in Japan are really commuter trains (more like the Long Island Rail Road than the New York subway, then the Malbone Street Wreck is still the deadliest rapid transit wreck. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 18:46, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

送假名 in zh-wiki

Hey, thanks for pointing out my mistake. I learnt Japanese verbs using the Group I, II and III method, so I just assumed masu-form was the same as 未然形. How is that different from 連用形 exactly? :P -- Tonync 17:41, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Korean language

Took a look at the section... looks great! Since there's so much there, I wonder if it might be better summarized and moved to a separate article -- or maybe merged into Dialects of Korean. Anyway, I fixed a couple of little things. I really don't know what the English word for ㅂ-irregular verbs would be (mostly, I think there isn't one), so I left that alone. hanja rfm

thanks for your note. feel free to add your own summary of the debate to the rfm, it seems that's how everyone else is doing it. i did link to hanja, however, since anyone taking up the mediation will have to become familiar with the full concept. but i was dismayed to see you edit the hanja article just as this issue is going to mediation. we could expand this debate there, & i could further edit that article.

i will not edit the hanja article if you revert your latest changes, & we can all have our say at mediation. of course you don't have to take my suggestion, but it will avoid complicating the issue now.

it is unfortunate that it had to come to this, but i hope you understand i'm just sick & tired of defending myself against accusations of attempting to "completely eliminate" hanja. come on, we are more reasonable than that.

oh, & i wasn't referring to you specifically by chinese-fluent wikipedians. everyone originally opposed to my infobox editing seemed to be fluent in chinese characters. i would've guessed you were actually japanese-speaking, from your user page. Appleby 06:52, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

maybe i overreacted to your hanja article edit. i do have two issues, though. 1. was kim il sung motivated by anti-japanese sentiments, as opposed to simple self-reliance, since hanja was used long before the japanese occupation? 2. the reference to the dictionary is misleading, since it still doesn't reflect local usage (it's aimed at foreigners) & dictionaries are supposed to include etymology, part of speech, pronunciation, example phrases, etc about the word, serving a fundamentally different purpose than encyclopedias which explain the topic. since it could appear that the reference to the dictionary was intended for the hanja infobox debate, i would still ask if you could delete that reference for now. Japanese and Korean

Hey there Kitty, thanks for the info about 朝鮮語を学ぼう! I'm very excited about getting this book, and very happy too to hear that it discusses N/S differences. Am I right in thinking the main focus is on N Korean, judging from the title?

Also, about the J-K relation, I've spent some time the past few days plugging J and K words into a modified Swadesh list I plopped into a spreadsheet, and I've found some interesting correlations between J and K, and also between the two and others in the Finno-Ugric group. I started with the Swadesh lists for Finno-Ugric languages, simply copying the whole table from the page and pasting into a spreadsheet for easy modification. It's been slow going as I'm really a bare-bones beginner in Korean, and have to go by what I find in online E-K dictionaries. I've tried to weed out words that are obviously from Chinese, but I'm not sure I got all of them weeded out, and as a beginner I'm limited in the synonyms I can dig up. But as I said, I'm finding some clear crossover in some places, and some possible cognates in others. A short list of the direct similarities (bear in mind that some of these are bald guesses, and that my grasp of romanization is incomplete):

I'm very much interested in the question of where we've come from and how we wound up where we are, and part of that for me is looking into linguistic relationships. (For that matter, archaeology is also an interest of mine, but languages are much easier to study without having to be on-site. :) ) It's naturally easiest to compare languages one is familiar with, as you can only really get into the structure and feel of a language from the inside. I'm working on Japanese etymologies too in my spare time, for instance.

Hi, about Malaysia's SP and PGB

You had posted a comment regarding the SP.. It is the nation's highest gallantry award for bravery and courage beyond call of duty. I'll be doing some updates for the site as soon as possible. However, it would not be an easy task as there are many receipients out there (mostly army and some police, with only 1 civvie who was murdered in Hong Kong). Some of these are not disclosed to the media as their actions involved covert operations overseas. Therefore, I'll be doing what ever I could do only. Thank you for your comments. Korean consonants

Welcome back! That's quite an impressive resource. Although at present there isn't a good place for them, I think those tables (or maybe a version combining the two) would fit in perfectly in a full-length article on Korean phonology. I would try writing such an article, but somehow just thinking about it makes my head hurt.

I saw your comments on the Galbijim Wiki deletion page. My thought is that it will probably survive with either a "no delete" or "inconclusive" vote. Do you also use Dave's ESL quite frequently?

When I came to leave a comment, I saw your user page. I have to agree with you about the constant edit wars. Take a look at the 2006 Arab-Isreal Conflict page. It's terrible and only after some prodding by myself are people actually talking about it rather then reverting the article ten times in an hour.
