Hi MC MasterChef,

Recently East Turkistan was moved to East Turkestan. What do you think about the move? Google also shows "East Turkestan" to be more common.

-- ran (talk) 05:11, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed that; my sources use both, and since I don't speak the language I have no idea how to judge which might be the more correct transliteration. Several of the major Uyghur groups seem to use "Turkistan" (Uyghur.org for example) but it's not clear to me that either spelling is tied to a particular political POV. I'll have to defer to others and rely on redirects, I guess. --MC MasterChef 13:28, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Would you care to register an opinon on the Masturbation Talk page as to whether a full color photograph of male masturbation is suitable for that page? Thank you. Force10 22:12, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

History of Central Asia

[edit]

I am trying to get History of Central Asia to featured article status and it has been correctly noted that it has very little on East Turkestan. I have noted your good work on Chinese Turkestan pages, especially First East Turkistan Republic, and feel you would be a good person to ask about this. While I feel the article should focus on the five Central Asian states it is also important to have some information on the eastern steppes. I have tried to add some, but this is far from my area of expertise. It would be great if you could take a look at History of Central Asia and check to see if the facts are right and if their are any major omissions. - SimonP 03:52, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

Templates with section headers

[edit]

Don't forget to substitute templates with section headers (such as {{Welcome2}} and {{idw}}) when you use them on talk pages - it reduces server load, and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Thanks, Alphax τεχ 13:29, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Japan

[edit]

Hello MC MasterChef,

Here's an invitation to visit Wikipedia:Japanese Wikipedians' notice board. There, you can meet other Wikipedians of all nationalities working on articles related to Japan. You'll find lists of new articles, projects, and resources such as Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles). These are active pages and we welcome participants there. Hope to see you there!

Best regards,

Fg2 09:56, September 5, 2005 (UTC)

P.S. Please visit the new [[Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Japan|Portal to Japan]] Portal:Japan. P.P.S. I took the photo of Karatsu Castle and invite you to post a better one!

Hi again,

I moved the Japan portal --- already! It's now at Portal:Japan. I edited my comment above but I don't feel comfortable editing your own user page. (The link to the old page redirects to the new one so there's not much lost.) Fg2 11:24, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

Archiving old "Did you know" entries on Portal:Japan

[edit]

Hi MC MasterChef,

You asked, "at what point do we archive older DYKs?" The answer is anytime. Since the left column on the Portal is quite a bit longer than the right, it might be a good time for me to do that. You're welcome to do it, too. Don't be shy!

Fg2 07:17, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I put the archive in a subpage of the template's Discussion page. Seems like a reasonable place --- thanks for your suggestion. Fg2 02:01, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program

[edit]

Hi — thanks for contributing to U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program during its recent peer review. Just thought I'd let you know that I've nominated the article for FA status. — Johantheghost 16:09, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for making it clear that your latest edit was "experimental". I've gone ahead and reverted it, but only just; I'm really kind of on the fence here. In the past, I've often done the "alternating-images" thing, eg. on my own web site extensively. I reverted because I just kind of think that having each section's text start on the left makes it easier to read — if you just want to soak up the text, it flows better this way, I think. What do you think? Also, we've had a bunch of "support" votes based on the old layout, so I'm kind of biased against a late change that alters the layout a lot, unless of course there's a good case for it. I've tried to find a concensus amongst FAs, and it seems like most — but not all — of them have right-aligned images only. I'm not aware of any established style or policy here. So, please don't take my revert as a huge put-down! Cheers! — Johantheghost 10:31, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

esoteric renaming on the HDM page

[edit]

just noticed your comment that the section was "trivia heavy" and wanted to point out that the only listed renamings are the ones that are hard to guess (like "chapel" = "science lab"). i wouldnt call it trivia, but extremely vital information. no other place on the web has such a comprehensive translation.--Alfakim 11:54, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[in reply to message on my talk page]
I'm not sure. Not every word that has a pronunciation guide has a page. and likewise a list of esoteric renamings as a seperate article COULD be made expansive (i could do every single one) but who the hell wants to read that? it's not encyclopedic. currently i think both the pronunciation and renaming lists are in the right place and condition.--Alfakim 19:13, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hi MC MasterChef, Thanks for the good edits of my addition to the Habitat page and for the helpful hints for us newcomers to Wikipedia! Cheers, Claygate 01:24, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User Page

[edit]

Glad to be of help. I had my first vandalism to my User Page a couple of days ago. What fun =:-)  --Cactus.man 10:31, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just a small reminder

[edit]

I'm sure you probably do this anyway and it was just an accident but when you revert vandalism (e.g. the blanking on Erection) it's a good idea to check whether the edit you are reverting back to is also vandalism. In this case you reverted back to the version by User:EaZyZ99 which was also vandalism. Cheers :) chowells 15:13, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Comment from a new user

[edit]

Why is this place so facist? I thought anyone could write whatever they wanted wheter it be satire or serious! -A new user

[edit]

Hi, it's not clear if your Sembawang picture is Crown Copyright (might have been a personal photo), or when it was first published (the 50 years is from publication date, not creation date). Perhaps you could send fleetairarmarchive.net an email asking for info about where they got the picture from. Stan 12:16, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that an anon recently changed one of your comments there. I know that the anon(s) who has/have been editing that article use(s) different IPs, but I've warned that IP anyway, using Template:Test. Hopefully they'll refrain from pulling sneaky tricks like that. --Idont Havaname 03:21, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your sig

[edit]

You seem to be missing a </small> at the end of your sig, which screws up any text following it. Can you please fix it? Thanks. Owen× 12:20, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Voluntary Wikipedia Questionairre

[edit]

My name is Oliver Metz. I am a student at Brent International School, Manila, an International school located in the Philippines. I am doing my last year of school (12th Grade) and I am writing a research paper (about 4000 words) on Wikipedia in ITGS (Information Technology in a Global Society). Of 10 randomly picked people you have been chosen as one. If you are willing and have the time to answer a few questions I would be grateful if you could fill out a short questionnaire of 6 questions.

Some Information about my essay:

My essay topic is about the freedom to collaborate and the usage of the Internet as a tool to do so. I will analyze topics such as Altruism versus Egoism as well as the Product Wikipedia itself.

My Thesis Statement: The Internet is not only a medium for communication, information and marketing but also a place for altruism, collaboration and cooperation. Wikipedia is the product of a voluntary collaborative effort that defies commonly held beliefs about human nature.

If you have any further questions or requests you would like to pose before filling out the questionnaire I'd gladly answer them.

you can write to: taklung@gmx.net (I check this e-mail address regularly)

Questionnaire:

Please answer the following questions by either inserting the answers or sending them to me via e-mail. (*are not necessarily required).

Name*: Age*: Nationality*:

1. How long have you been contributing to Wikipedia?

2. Have you or are you planning to donate money to the Wikipedia cause?

3. When you first heard of Wikipedia and the concepts it is based on, what did you think about it and did you believe it could work? What do you think now?

4. Why do you think people contribute to Wikipedia? With it being voluntary what interests do/did you follow when contributing to Wikipedia?

5. Do you think that Wikipedia appeals to Altruism? If yes, do you think such a thing can exist in our society in which greed and consumption apparently drive the world?

6. What do you think makes Wikipedia most beneficial to society?

Further comments*:

With kind regards,

Oliver Metz --TakLung 04:42, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Justinting

[edit]

I blocked User:Justinting for 24 hours after you reverted his vandalism to Law & Order. I wondered why you didn't block him yourself and then realised you're not an admin. Thanks for reverting his vandalism, anyway. What is it with that guy? JIP | Talk 11:53, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
