Question from Ordinating on Penny Mordaunt (22:08, 11 July 2022)
Hi, I'm having an issue where when I'm editing Wikipedia on my phone via Google Chrome as I'm attempting to make an edit to a certain part of a paragraph of an article although my cursor stays in the correct place as I attempt to type, the text I am typing appears at the top of the paragraph rather than in the right place. Is this an issue you are aware of? Is there a way to get around/solve it? Or is it just something you have to deal with if you choose to edit on a phone? Thanks very much for your help --Ordinating (talk) 22:08, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
- hi Ordinating and welcome to Wikipedia! perhaps check phabricator? I'ven't encountered this bug (although I use iOS/Safari/Desktop view when editing on mobile), so I'm unable to help you. apologies, and happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 10:38, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Question from Usualtalk (17:01, 25 July 2022)
Hi, alternate mentor -- thanks for being available to help.
I'm about to create a new article. What's the best way to start -- create entry in external text editor with appropriate tags (I'm familiar with using tag markup in other contexts so am comfortable learning Wikipedia's tag set) and upload the article, or using native Wikipedia WYSIWYG editor I saw mentioned? How do people like the WYSIWYG editor? --Usualtalk (talk) 17:01, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- hi Usualtalk! it depends on how you prefer to work. I usually use the built-in source editor, which allows me to press preview in the wiki instead of having to move it from my text editor to wikipedia before checking what the page looks like. source also gives you the exact code in an article, which if you're used to doing stuff with programming or markup languages can be useful.
- I don't have much experience with VisualEditor although that's not a bad place to start since it allows you to see what exactly are you doing and editing while you're still getting the hang of how the site works (instead of having to cross reference each template and how they work, you can instead see what those templates look like and what variables can be added by just clicking on them). happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 03:12, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

My article got denied about former baseball player Steve Domecus. I can't find where I should edit it to resubmit. --3ptlyons (talk) 22:24, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- hi @3ptlyons! you may have accidentally removed the page contents while submitting, which I've restored. but before you resubmit, you might want to read Your first article, which guides you in article creation and includes what you need. in particular, your draft is in need of reliable sources, such as news articles which ideally discuss them in depth, which prove claims you made in the article. reliable sources are also required in proving notability of a subject, which can be found in that link (with the guidelines specific for athletes).
- once you're done with the above, you can click the melecie talk - 11:47, 12 August 2022 (UTC) button in your draft (not here!) to submit your draft. happy editing! 💜

- hi @BLAQUEWIDOW89 and welcome to wikipedia!
- the only source I can find information about Vinolia's etymology is Names.org, which is a user-generated source that doesn't really provide sources so take it with a grain of salt (and never use it on Wikipedia) where the most agreed-on etymology is that it's a Hebrew word (many names from many languages and cultures are from Hebrew) derived from "love of God", or that it's from English meaning "kind and patient"[1]. I cannot prove if either these are true exactly however.
- Grobbelaar seems to be an Afrikaans surname meaning
"Growler"
derived from another language (the page seems to refer to "grobler" in German but Google Translate says that it isn't really a German term, or at least a modern German term, plus it's uncited)
- regardless, the best place for these kinds of questions for the future would be the Reference desk, specifically the Language section. happy editing and reading! 💜 melecie talk - 12:30, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

Question from PrésidentDuListenbourg (07:31, 1 November 2022)
Hey I was just wondering since I'm new to wikipedia how do I create my page? --PrésidentDuListenbourg (talk) 07:31, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
- hi @PrésidentDuListenbourg and welcome to wikipedia! this depends on what you consider "your page".
- if you mean a page about you, things you have made or done, or anything similar, unfortunately it's best not to. there's a whole load of reasons why, but the short is that pages are best created by someone who has no connection to what they're writing about, since being connected to the subject, especially if you are the subject, would make it harder for you to write that article due to all the extra policies that you have to read and comply with, especially the Conflict of interest policy, and the Paid editing policy if you're specifically paid to write), on top of the difficulty in creating a new page.
- if you're creating a page about something else, neat! it's a challenge, so I'd understand if you'd rather do easier tasks such as ones outlined here before undertaking it, but if you'd like to continue nonetheless, you may want to start with reading Reliable sources, which will outline the sources you can use to back up claims in your articles as you cannot just write about things without backing up your claim with a published source, even if you know the statement is true. next, check out the Notability guidelines, which determine if the subject you have chosen can be considered notable enough for an article (but don't forget that you still need reliable sources for this!). and finally would be the process of writing the article itself: you can read Your first article to learn how you write an article, and create a user sandbox at User:PrésidentDuListenbourg/sandbox or prefixing your article's name with Draft: to keep your stuff until it's ready.

Don't go blindly undoing edit requests. You need to realise that anons sometimes know more that logged in editors. 103.21.175.109 (talk) 05:52, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
- hi ip user!
- for Steve Jobs, I routinely close edit requests that state a claim, but do not cite a reliable source. neither of the sources already present stated mentioned practicing under a yogi, so it's on you to provide one.
- for Protein, reliable sources aren't really required in this case, but what I'm asking is to be more specific with what portals you believe should be removed so we know which ones to remove (what's obvious to you may not be obvious to everyone else: for example, I see just the food, ecology and environment portals as unnecessary, although others may disagree). if what you want is to decrease overlinking in Wikipedia and/or something related to portals specifically, the best place to ask is not there but over at the Village pump, where requests regarding the wiki as a whole can be seen by pretty much everyone.

I wanna create page for my brand, Please guide me 🙏 --Iamyasirhaseeb (talk) 02:47, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
- hi @Iamyasirhaseeb and welcome to Wikipedia!
- the short answer is you don't.
- the long answer is that your brand can have an article (a page) if and only if said brand is notable enough for Wikipedia's standards with coverage from reliable sources like reputable and established news sites that are independent from you, plus if one is created, said article cannot promote you in any way (due to them having to be neutral) and will only state what is available from those sources, and finally you'd not be able to edit the article except for super simple stuff like fixing clear typos due to the conflict of interest. since it's unlikely you'd match the criteria, a page cannot be created, and even if one is created, it likely won't help boost your brand (since it's just one in the literal millions of pages).
- instead of creating a page for your brand, I'd suggest helping out elsewhere instead! you may take a look at the task center for simple things you may want to do. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 10:53, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Question from Magnus368 (18:46, 3 December 2022)
Hello Melecie, Nice to meet you here on Wikipedia. I have a question regarding a draft article that I have submitted and was wondering if you could help me understand the process?
It is my first draft article. I have to admit that the process of improving it was quite long. The draft was first listed as a start- class, and now it is listed as a class-draft. Does it mean that it was downgraded or upgraded?
Thanks for your help! Magnus --Magnus368 (talk) 18:46, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
- hi @Magnus368! this just means that your draft is a draft. the main rating system (Stub/Start/C/B/A/Good/Featured) only applies for articles and not drafts, and all drafts are tagged draft instead. Question from Bluepandora (07:42, 30 December 2022)
Hi. I became aware of Albert Ball through my interest in Papplewick and Linby. His purchases of Bulwell Hall, "The Papplewick Estates", which included land and properties in Papplewick,Linby and Newstead, including The Grange, which later became Papplewick Lido, and more country house estates throughout not only the UK but also, I believe extended to Ireland, was a meteoric rise from his beginnings as a plumber. --Bluepandora (talk) 07:42, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

- hi @Little Angel IVF! IMDb (1) and Rate Your Music (4) are both not allowed since they are user-generated content which are not allowed due to easily being changed by anyone, and not really having an editorial process. Letterboxd (2) and Trakt (3) both gather its metadata, including writer names, from The Movie Database (seems to be different from IMDb), which is also user-generated content, so they also cannot be used as a source for this information. what we need are information ideally from reliable sources such as news articles or sites with editorial oversight like Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 06:32, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

Question from Gunnar Hrolfsson (16:58, 8 January 2023)
Hi Melecie, thanks for being there.
I noticed that pages about TV series are structured into General info/season info/episode info, and that episode articles contain an infobox which seems to be a template and receives the content from "somewhere else".
I just edited a page where I removed links to actors from the plot section because these links also appear in the infobox. Is that an ok thing to do?
Thanks for your input, appreciate it.
BR, Gunnar --Gunnar Hrolfsson (talk) 16:58, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
- hi @Gunnar Hrolfsson and welcome to Wikipedia! you don't really need to remove links in the article that are also found in the infobox. the Manual of Style guideline on duplicate links states that the article body itself usually only needs one link to a certain other article, although it can be repeated elsewhere if useful, such as in references or indoboxes. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 00:15, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

I'm unable to help you further as I don't review articles, so I can only help you with understanding what comments have been given to you by others. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 03:13, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi, how do I delete an image I uploaded to my files? I'm trying to add this to a wikipedia page and it's saying the image is a duplicate. Thanks --Sonya7skylab (talk) 10:52, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
- hi @Sonya7skylab and welcome to Wikipedia! The file itself is located on File:Snowdrop-sundays.jpg in Wikipedia Commons. You can press "Upload a new version of this file" to update the photo there. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 23:23, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for closing that disruptive post on the Teahouse! I didn't translate it as I was busy at the moment, but I'm glad you stepped up and closed it! Tails Wx 05:04, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
- hi @Tails Wx and you're welcome! it was the rare occasion GoogleTrans came on handy as most of the time it annoys me when I try to reply on a teahouse post on mobile-desktop view and it pops up every time I try to use brackets or braces on my phone keyboard... worth it. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 05:10, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

- Honestly, after trying the GoogleTrans, it felt kind of exasperating. :( Sometimes, it would move me to the beginning of the post, and the translation would block the text I am writing, causing problems. I've disabled it for now, but I'll try it later! Tails Wx 14:07, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

- Your best solution is to use a browser plugin to make use of Google Translate. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:44, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for agreeing to mentor me. So nice to meet you. Was hoping you could help me draft an article for XYZ. Greatideas43 (talk) 00:13, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- hi Greatideas43 and welcome to Wikipedia! if you are able to find sources and write a draft, I can hopefully help you with polishing that draft and copyreading. though, I've read in your previous edit that you plan to write one about your colleague, is this still the case? if so, please also take note of the Conflict of interest policy which states what to do when you're writing about yourself, someone you know personally, or something you're working for. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 00:48, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Melecie,
- Thanks for the reply.
- No, this isn’t about a colleague. I’m aware of the conflict of interest policy. How do I send the draft over to you?
- Kind regards. Greatideas43 (talk) 08:29, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Greatideas43, you can publish a draft (see Draft) and send me the link to it, so I and other editors can help you out with it through copyediting and tips. once you're done with that, you can go through the Articles for creation process to get even more feedback and have it become an article once it's good enough. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 10:53, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Adding Images to Wikipedia
Hello. How can we add images/photos to profile pages? Greatideas43 (talk) 18:46, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- hi @Greatideas43! I'm assuming this is about Kennedy Obohwemu?
- if the image you're planning to use is already in Wikipedia Commons, you may use the image (even if it's not yours). you may edit the infobox you're using and write the file's name (as seen in Commons) onto the image field.
- if the image you're planning to use is not yours, you may not use that image. to make a long story short, images have to have a free license whenever possible, which most images in the Internet don't have (if no license is mentioned, it's considered to be All Rights Reserved).
- if the image you're planning to use is yours (perhaps you met Obohwemu yourself?) great! you may upload it through the file upload wizard to be able to use it here. note that uploading here means licensing it under a free license as mentioned earlier, which means anyone can use it freely, make edits of it, and use it commercially (though there are licenses that require others to credit you even with these), you can't just upload an image which says that wikipedia has exclusive rights over your image. once that's done, the rest of the process is simple: you may edit thw infobox to add the image in it as mentioned above.
- happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 22:43, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Concerns
Hello Melecie,
Sorry to bother you. An administrator has expressed concerns over my edits on Obohwemu’s page. He/she feels I have close connections to the subject, hence my decision to refrain from making further contributions to his article.
I wanted to make clarifications directly on the administrator’s talk page, but I felt it would be wiser discussing it with you as you are officially my Wikipedia mentor.
I would like to clarify that I have no close ties to Obohwemu. I could submit my passport, personal photo and other personally identifiable info for verification if that would help.
I was sitting among the audience when Obohwemu conducted a literary competition for all secondary schools in Kogi State. My school narrowly lost out to the eventual winners. This was six (6) years ago. Despite the loss, I have not stopped admiring the motivation that Obohwemu had to put together that expensive project. These days, people like him don’t get the recognition they truly deserve. It’s always all about entertainers and politicians!
I was shocked when I searched Wikipedia and his profile was not there, whereas people who had far less achievements had their articles all over the place. It had always been on my mind to create an account on Wikipedia and submit a draft of Obohwemu’s profile, hoping it would get approved.
If you recall, when I joined Wikipedia as an editor you asked if this was about my ‘colleague’. Obohwemu probably doesn’t even know about my existence, but I admire him all the same. You can consider me a big fan. Few days after I registered my account on Wikipedia I discovered that his page had been created. That was simply amazing! By the way, I had absolutely nothing to do with the page creation. There’s absolutely no way I would submit a draft and the article would be approved in just a few days!
Anyways, I went through his Wikipedia article and noticed there were conspicuously missing elements. I have had the opportunity to read his books and his mini-biography, so you can understand why I have certain information. A simple search on Google would also reveal relevant findings.
I hope this clarifies the situation.
That being said, I would like to ask if I could suggest some edits on Obohwemu’s article as I would no longer want to make direct edits. If you or any other editor could make those edits on my behalf, I would be appreciative.
Kindly advise.
Cheers! Greatideas43 (talk) 11:59, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
- hi @Greatideas43! I've notified Deb about this in your talk page as you may've seen. you may always discuss your changes in the talk page before bringing them to the article itself. while I may not be able to help implement your edit requests (I am currently really busy with stuff in real life, and if I wasn't I don't really implement major edit requests), I will still be here if you need help with policies. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 15:52, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

- Hello Melecie,
- Apologies for disturbing your peace.
- I followed your advice and posted on Obohwemu’s Talk Page about the possibility of adding a section on Activism to his article. I got no response after almost 2 weeks. I asked for Admin Help and I was shocked when a user literally dismissed the proposition, calling it ‘absolutely awful’. He went ahead to issue me a warning or threat as it were, saying I could be blocked for asking for Admin Help. I’m still struggling to understand what he did and why he did it. I consider it disrespectful to say the least.
- I don’t think such acts of BULLYING and THREATS should be tolerated in a platform where user rights are respected and protected. I feel uncomfortable with his approach, hence I’m drawing to your attention to it.
- I did absolutely nothing wrong by proposing additional content that could be added to an article. I not only proposed material, I went ahead to provide verifiable sources to back my claims. I see no reason why I should be subjected to such hostile treatment.
- Kindly advise.
- I appreciate your usual support and understanding.
- Thank you.
- Greatideas43 (talk) 09:56, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- hi @Greatideas43!
- firstly the template {{admin help}} is only used when you need help from an administrator specifically, which in most cases is not needed. you may want to instead use {{request edit}} to request your edit so that anyone who monitors the edit requests list (not just administrators) is able to act on your requests.
- regarding your content, while I'm not really the best person to evaluate this (as well as sources), I'll try to help anyway: I feel like the section is more focused on what he says instead of what he does. I'd advise you to check out similar pages, like Rosa Parks#Early activism and Malala Yousafzai#Early Activism and #Continuing Activism and maybe other activists' articles to see some examples of how one could be written.
- so, regarding the actual talk page discussion. Bbb seems to be blunt at times to me (though his archives suggest otherwise), which does come off as bitey. I'll maybe give them a notification regarding this later.
- unfortunately, due to lack of time and energy for me, I haven't really checked the sources yet so I can't see if that contributes to the issue. regardless, happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 12:10, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for your help and support, Melecie. Indeed, BBb did come off as bitey. Regarding the edit on the Talk Page, I may have missed the relevant elements required for activism, hence the need for edits. The sources provided a lot of insights into his activism. I will use the template you suggested, and hopefully someone would help with the edits. Thanks again! 🙏🙏 Greatideas43 (talk) 13:34, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Pip pb (07:24, 30 June 2023)
How do I make my own Wikipedia page? --Pip pb (talk) 07:24, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- hi @Pip pb and welcome to Wikipedia! by "your own page", do you mean "a page about you", or "a page about something else you want to make"?
- if you mean "a page about you", I heavily recommend not to do so. autobiographies are not really allowed, and there may also be reasons why you may not one. instead, I'd recommend setting up your own site if that's what you want (there are many free hosts out there, like GitHub Pages or Neocities (both do require a bit ofHTML/CSS knowledge, but there are ones out there that don't, I just don't really know of any)
- if, however, you're planning to write an article about something else, fee free to go right ahead! you may start by reading the Notability and Reliable sources guidelines to see if what you're writing about can have an article (and what you can use to prove what you're writing in the article). then collect some sources and check out Your first article to learn how to make one.

Question from MADUA14 (13:25, 9 July 2023)
Hey, I made a Wikipedia page for a sport team. But it wasn't published. How can i publish it? --MADUA14 (talk) 13:25, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- hi @MADUA14 and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm assuming you're referring to User:MADUA14/Sample page? to quickly answer your question, I've added a banner where you can click on the Submit the draft for review! button to submit it. however, I honestly don't think this draft is ready to be published yet, due to the lack of independent reliable sources that establish the team's notability. the only sources not from the school itself are a Daily News article which leads to a 404 and one from its rival's website. I suggest that before you start writing, you should first collect independent sources (ones not affiliated with the school or team) first before writing everything based on these sources. if there are not enough independent sources, it would then not meet notability which may mean it may be too early for it to have an article. happy editing! 💜 melecie talk - 00:02, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- thank you for the reply Melecie. So if i add the references, it will be easy to get the approval right? MADUA14 (talk) 12:14, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- this depends on whether the references are good enough to support the article, and the writing is also good enough. to be blunt, I don't think what is currently written would pass Articles for Creation, even when the draft has enough references, because it feels a bit too glorifying the team instead of being neutral with sentences like
With a rich history, the team is considered one of the top rugby schools in the country, having produced many talented players who have gone on to represent Sri Lanka at the international level
and...have niched itself a name as the most feared rugby playing team in the schools arena
. but I believe rewriting the article from the ground up, only adding in what are stated in these sources, would help the draft stand, even if it does not end up as long as it is now, since you wouldn't be working backwards this time. happy editing and best of luck! 💜 melecie talk - 23:52, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
