FMA Flipchart

[edit]

It's the list of *agencies* under each portfolio: http://finance.gov.au/publications/flipchart/ Is there somewhere I could put a cite tag neatly to say the list is from there? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxious (talkcontribs) 07:29, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Medal for Gallantry

[edit]

There seems to be an issue with the MG list. Looks like Martin Wallace is wikilinked four times under different names:

  • CPL W
  • SGT W
  • CAPT W
  • Signalman Martin 'Jock' WALLACE

Was this intentional?

Yes.
The Martin Wallace (soldier) page (and the book it refers to) is (so far) the only place I can find mention of CPL W, SGT W and/or CAPT W. (But I'm still looking.)
If you can think of a better way to do it, please do so with my blessing.

Surely he only the recieved the award once.

Indeed.

Also is there a reason why you have listed Trooper "F" as a notable recipient?

Yes.
There were 3 anonymous soldiers awarded MGs on the same day. I have identified two of them. I'm still working on identifying the third.

Unless we know his name I think it may be difficult to assert notability.

a) I'm not altogether sure why those in the "notable" list are more "notable" than any of the other MG recipients.
b) Surely anyone awarded an MG is notable?

Anotherclown (talk) 14:11, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It would seem to me the page is still "a work in progress" ...
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:25, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unclear on the meaning of your replies. Are you saying that CPL W, SGT W, CAPT W and Signalman Martin 'Jock' WALLACE are the same person? Also, are you asserting that anonymous recipients are notable because they are anonymous (I ask this because you have listed them under the heading "Notable recipients")? Lastly as a third level gallantry award a recipient of an MG is not in and of themselves automatically assumed to be notable under WP:SOLDIER, although they may of course be notable due to "significant independent coverage" in reliable sources under the WP:GNG (hence it would be a case by case assessment). Anotherclown (talk) 14:57, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
>Are you saying that CPL W, SGT W, CAPT W and Signalman Martin 'Jock' WALLACE are the same person?
No. I'm not personally saying anything. The Martin Wallace (soldier) page says they are 4 different people.
>are you asserting that anonymous recipients are notable because they are anonymous?
No.
>hence it would be a case by case assessment
Fine by me.
Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 15:05, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I think I get what you saying now. From the Martin Wallace article: "Three other SAS soldiers, (a corporal, a sergeant and a captain), also received awards anonymously for their involvement in the same action." I guess the issue I see here is no where does it say they were awarded MGs, nor does it say that the citations refered to them as CPL W, SGT W, CAPT W. Is there a reference to support this claim? IMO we really cannot link these entries all to Martin Wallace (soldier) either as it give the wrong impression, equally unless there is a reference which demonstrates they recieved the MG I don't think they should be listed at all. Surely their awards would be listed in the Commonwealth Gazette for instance? Anotherclown (talk) 15:10, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
>no where does it say they were awarded MGs
Hmmm. Indeed. I guess I mis-read it.
>Is there a reference to support this claim?
Which claim?
The claim they were awarded MGs and that they were called CPL W, SGT W, CAPT W... Anotherclown (talk) 15:34, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
>IMO ...
Whatever. As I said: "If you can think of a better way to do it, please do so with my blessing."
Yep, lets not guess... delete any entry that cannot be verified. Anotherclown (talk) 15:34, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
>Surely their awards would be listed in the Commonwealth Gazette for instance?
You would have thought so, wouldn't you, but so far I've only managed to track down about 40 of the 54 recipients.
Cheers (and goodnight), Pdfpdf (talk) 15:18, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've physically checked both references used in the Martin Wallace article (Lee and McPhedran) and neither indicate the identity of these three men, or what award they recieved. As such I think these entries need to be removed as without references to reliable sources its WP:OR (and likely incorrect research at that). Anotherclown (talk) 15:34, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your last few changes look good, happy with that. Cheers. Anotherclown (talk) 15:41, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Honours and Awards discussion

[edit]

Hi Pdfpdf, another discussion has been started about displaying ribbon's/awards in general on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history#Medal bars and styles page, the talk has more of an international swing to it so more people do seem open to the idea, just a heads up. Welcome back

[edit]

Hello there. I know it's a bit (well, very) belated but welcome back to Wikipedia. It's good to see you here again. It's been a while since we've debated over Adelaide articles. I hope you're keeping well over in this section of WP and hopefully we'll spar again in some random part of Adelaide. Cheers. ClaretAsh 10:43, 31 January 2012 (UTC) (formerly, LordVetinari)[reply]

Well thank you! (Most appreciated.) Given the nature of WP, I have little doubt we'll be sparring again!
Changing topic, ClaretAsh vs LordVetinari? Interesting!! (And both more interesting than pdfpdf!)
Best Wishes (and Happy New Year!) Pdfpdf (talk) 10:49, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Up your street perhaps

[edit]

I came across this little snippet that might be up your street. It appears we don't currently have an article on either the Whinham family or Whinham College, despite several people on WP having attended there. Interested...? ClaretAsh 10:44, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed! And I also expect user:Doug butler is / would be.
Thanks for the lead! Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:03, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Elders

[edit]

Hi Pdfpdf! Could you please take a look at Torrens (clipper ship)? Fascinating, but it would be vastly improved with a picture if you could - particularly of Elders' crescent and stars flag, of which I was totally ignorant. Doug butler (talk) 07:36, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Could you please take a look at Torrens (clipper ship)? Fascinating" - Certainly. And I agree that it's fascinating!
"of which I was totally ignorant" - As am I. But I'll see what I can find.

Montefiore House

[edit]

Hi! Can you help me with whether James Chambers' Montefiore House (whence John McDouall Stuart set forth on 25 October 1861) is the same as Samuel Way's, now part of Aquinas College? Doug butler (talk) 00:29, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. Short answer: Off the top of my (aging) head, no, I can't confirm.
Personal opinion (without any supporting info): I wouldn't have thought so. I would have thought Montefiore House was West of Montefiore Rd. (And we both know Aquinas College is East of Montefiore Rd.) However, I have no data to support my predjudice. Sorry! Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:46, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I concur (though not about the College), but needed a little Dutch courage before suggesting to the Stuart Society they fix their web page. Doug butler (talk) 14:19, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

db-move

[edit]

I agree with you that Craig Cooper should be a disambiguation. However I was shocked to see an experienced editor like you trying to correct Craig Cooper (badmington) by a copy&paste. Ref RADM Griggs and three rows. The RAN seem to prefer ribbons in rows of up to 3 as opposed to Army and RAAF rows of 4. Fits better on the uniform. There is a ref somewhere but I can't be bothered looking it up. --Oliver Nouther (talk) 05:18, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you recently edited Ric Smith, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Public Service Medal and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
