Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, David King Estate. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Hello!

[edit]

I am a volunteer archivist helping at the David King Estate and attempting to write my very first Wikipedia entry. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated! I'm not being paid and didn't know Dave, I'm mostly helping with cataloging and just thought it would be a fun opportunity to learn how to use Wikipedia (since we are already gathering and organizing information as part of the cataloging process.) Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! I’m sorry your article was declined – I know it’s not a fun way to be welcomed to the project. I’m not one of the people who declined your article, but some tips would be:
  • Read through Help:Your First Article - it walks through many of the common pitfalls of less experienced users creating new articles.
  • One issue with the article is that it may not meet notability requirements. Subjects of Wikipedia articles need to have been covered by independent sources. See WP:NBIO for the notability guidelines for people, and ensure that King meets them.
  • Once you’ve determined whether King is notable, you’ll need to make sure your article cites reliable independent sources. This makes sure the article follows the WP:VERIFIABILITY policy and reliable source guideline (WP:RS).
I also recommend requesting a username change. This one makes it sound like it’s being used by multiple people. See the username policy, and how to request a username change. Best, Politanvm talk 22:56, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much Politanvm! This is very helpful. I've added more references and requested the name change as you suggested. So kind of you to reach out! David King Estate (talk) 23:06, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PenoloWafer. Thanks for your message. You should follow the guide here, so there is no question that you are not being up-front that you are working (paid or not) for the David King Estate. In particular you might add a note, using the {{UserboxCOI}} template, to your user page. I know you will try to be neutral, but it's easy for unconscious biases to slip into edits on things we are personally involved in. So be prepared to have your contributions challenged or modified. Thanks. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 10:08, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much Escape_Orbit! I'll definitely add the template (as soon as I figure out how!) I thought I was being up front by putting the estate name in my user name, but I think it just led people to think I had some kind of financial incentive. I would love other people to get involved and start modifying and challenging the post! I'm really just trying to post the beginnings of something, not the final word. I work a lot with punk history and it's notoriously hard to source and really works best when people pool their recollections and resources. PenoloWafer (talk) 17:25, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
