Welcome!

Hello, Readingforest, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as Forest of Reading, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines, and may soon be deleted.

There's a page about creating articles you may want to read called Your first article. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on this page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. The article Forest of Reading has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The references do not support notability, all of the trademark declarations are of a promotional nature, and the creator appears to have a WP:COI regarding this subject. Under the circumstances this article could qualify under WP:CSD criteria.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. September 2011[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from Forest of Reading. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Here are a few key questions:

You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a company, group or product that you have been promoting, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to violate the 3 important principles above. Daniel Case (talk) 13:58, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Helpme request[edit]

I would like to be able to go back in and edit an article to satisfy wikipedia's requirements, but am unable to do so because my username is not valid. I have requested a username change and recognize that changing it alone will not mean everything will be fine, but I am interested in having another chance to edit my article ... hence the request to change my username. I feel kind of stuck right now! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I have moved this to the bottom of the page - new contributions to talk pages are usually added at the bottom, which makes it easier to keep track of what is going on.
You have not answered the three important questions asked by Daniel Case just above here. That is the next thing you need to do, before your unblock request can be considered. Please answer below here, and sign your answer by ending it with four "tilde" characters ~~~~ which the system will turn into a signature of your username and the time and date, like this: JohnCD (talk) 18:22, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. In response to Daniel Case's three questions above:

Yes, I understand. The Forest of Reading not a business, rather it is the umbrella name given to seven individual Canadian literary awards, run by the Ontario Library Association, much like the Michael L. Printz Award is the name for one of several literary awards given out annually in the United States by the American Library Association (or in the case of the Printz Award, the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association). A Michael L. Printz Award article is included in wikipedia, as are articles for several other literary awards conferred by the American Library Association, including the Caledcott, the Newberry, the Dartmouth, the Coretta Scott King, and the Stonewall, to name a few. Including the Forest of Reading awards as a wikipedia article was my attempt at ensuring Canada's literary scene is equally as well-represented as the U.S's in wikipedia.
Yes, I do understand conflict of interest issues. I do not work for the Ontario Library Association (the organization responsible for the Forest of Reading awards) and I am attempting to change my username so it does not seem otherwise.
  • Do you understand that to be considered for an encyclopedia article, the subject must be notable?
Yes, I understand wikipedia's general notability guidelines. As one of Canada's largest literary initiatives, the Forest of Reading has received significant coverage in a variety of reliable secondary sources, nation-wide. I understand that any documents created by Ontario Library Association staff will not be considered reliable secondary sources (ie. press releases). I understand that in order for a source to be used, it must be independent of the subject. In my first draft of my article, I failed to include proper secondary sources and I failed to cite properly.

I would like to go back in and address these three areas of concern, as well as change the tone so it does not sound so promotional, and remove the trademark symbols. Readingforest (talk) 18:59, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Helpme request[edit]

Haras2011 (talk) 18:33, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removed all images from article except for main one. With regards to COI and tone issues, this was resolved on September 14 when I responded to two questions posed:

* Do you understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a business directory?

I am working at updating the sources used, but am wondering why wikipedia's Caldecott Medal article has not been flagged for similar supposed copyright violations or marked as being problematic because it relies on primary sources, as it directly references content created by the American Library Association, the organization responsible for the award, much like the Ontario Library Association is responsible for the awards I am trying to describe. The Caledcott Medal article includes bullets that includes information from the American Library Association (primary source!) and references each point as being from the ALA website. I did this for Forest of Reading and have been repeatedly flagged for it. I would appreciate being able to do the same for the Forest of Reading. It is not as though I am presenting others' opinions as my own. I am presenting award criteria and technical information, for which the most authoritative source of information can only be the organization behind the awards.Haras2011 (talk) 18:27, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete the table with my images for the article, Forest of Reading? It messed up all the formatting and scattered the images so they did not correspond with the appropriate text. Just wondering if setting up a table with images is a wikipedia no-no. Did I violate some rule? I have since removed all the images from my article as I am so tired of being flagged that I decided to just omit them, so they're gone - just wondering for future instances. Also, I'm curious as to why I keep getting flagged for relying on primary sources when articles such as Caldecott Medal (an award given by the American Library Association) includes references created by the American Library Association and is not similarly flagged. Finally, I responded to allegations of COI and sounding promotional by answering questions posed in September on my usertalk page. It was my understanding that my responses were satisfactory as I did not hear otherwise from the contributor who posed them. And now I am being flagged all over again. It is very frustrating as I am trying very hard to be careful, and as a result, I am leaving out pertinent information that would enhance my article because the only source I can find for it keeps getting flagged as a primary source - then I go to other articles about similar topics and see that they have been able to include primary sources. Can you please help? I don't know what to do anymore and I'm apprehensive about trying to do anything as every time I do, I get flagged, and I do not want to run the risk of being blocked. I'm contemplating requesting that my article simply be removed from wikipedia, which would be a shame since it concerns one of Canada's largest and foremost literary events and would enhance wikipedia's CanCon. Many thanks. Haras2011 (talk) 18:53, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey there! I'll attempt to answer your questions here. I viewed your answers to the blocking issue, unfortunately, there were questions that weren't addressed at that time. You mentioned that you are not an employee of the Ontario Library Association, but didn't respond with how you are connected to the organization. The earlier question that inquired about your understanding that Wikipedia is not a business directory, should have simply asked if you understood that Wikipedia is not a directory in any capacity. The answer provided, merely attempted to deflect questions regarding the business status of the organization. In any regard, I would be happy to help clear up any questions regarding the conflict of interest. Can you let me know how you are connected with the library or reading program, outside of employment? As for the questions regarding the Caldecott Medal, honestly, there are plenty of articles on Wikipedia that probably should not exist. Oftentimes, it is quite possible that the other article should also be deleted, but nobody has noticed it. We can't base the appropriateness of one article, based on the inappropriateness of another. We can't assume the one article is correct when it is compared to another article that shouldn't be here either. I removed the images from the tables, simply because they weren't necessary, and because they placed the images on the left, rather than the right. We don't place images directly below the section heading, unless they are on the right side. I did not reformat them to correlate with the section content, because once you added content back to the article that was devoid of copyright violations, the images would then be formatted properly. Don't worry about being blocked. I am more than happy to work with you and answer any questions you may have. A couple of things to keep in mind. Don't ever removed the maintenance (issue) templates without resolving the issues that have been flagged. And don't ever add content copied from another source. Removing maintenance templates and adding copyrighted content may result in a suspension or blocking of your account. If you ever have a question about someone's edits, just contact them on their talk page to find out the reason behind the edit (just like you did when you contacted me). More times than not, others will work with you to iron out any kinks and help improve the article together. At this point, we need to find reliable and independent sources to support the article content. Most of the article, is only sourced to the library's website. Notability for organizations is required, as established through significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Again, stay away from copyright violations. I am confident that you are working in good faith and I am more than willing to help. Please let me know if I got to all your questions. Or ask more... Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 19:50, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks for the suggestions. I will attempt to begin addressing your questions and concerns:

  • You mentioned that you are not an employee of the Ontario Library Association, but didn't respond with how you are connected to the organization.

I am familiar with the Ontario Library Association because it runs the Forest of Reading awards program and the Forest of Reading awards are major reading awards in Canada. I am familiar with the Forest of Reading because I am interested in the arts, reading, and literacy, and I am passionate about Canada's literary scene. I understand that Wikipedia is not a directory, but perhaps my interpretation of directory differs from others'. It was my impression that entries on awards, prizes, medals, etc. were permissible entries in wikipedia (assuming they are properly composed). If awards entries fall under the definition of directory, please let me know, as I don't want to keep having to defend my article and we can avoid hours of back-and-forth, and Forest of Reading as an entry can simply be removed. Not trying to be difficult, just trying to be realistic at this point. Thanks. Haras2011 (talk) 13:04, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
