Tallest structures - "Paris area"

We are presently having a dispute over an article title - an article about structures "in Paris" , but over 70% of the article content, and the tallest of the lot (save a very few), are not at all in Paris. A few of us have managed to come into agreement over an "in the Paris area" title - your views and vote on the matter would much be welcome at Talk:List of tallest buildings and structures in Paris. Edit on Mount Kembla, N.S.W.

I have substantially edited your page on mt. kembla and combined it with other page on the geograpy of the mountain and pag on the mt kembla mining disaster. I believe that it is much more efficent to read about this information on mount kembla from one page. What do u think about the combining and information. I don't have a problem with larger articles if they can stay focussed on a topic. In the case of Mount Kembla you seem to have done a fairly good job, although we would normally put a town or suburb in a separate article from a natural feature such as a mountain or river. --Scott Davis Talk 14:36, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

RE the AHD, you have a point. I am not actually sure there is a definate boundary to it, although I do know the study areas that developed it back in 1971 were based on tide data only on continental Australia. btxtsf

I would say what is not west coast is probably worth it - however if you can: Any of the older power stations (if you go near them at all I have Lake MArgaret sort of done inside, but any extras outside would be good) - I think Chuq and mates have the Hobart area well done - obscure townsites on the side tracks are always worth doing - even something as mundane as highway signs (I was in Tassie about 4 months ago and forgot some of the mundane highway shots) but its up to you! Thanks - I picked up about 4 of them that I could imagine how they relate to the current text. If the rest fit, add them too. Eventually someone will respond to an peer review and complain if there are too many pictures, but that generally only happens once someone adds a gallery block, not just if the pictures fit down the sides. Ideally they should be spread left/right/left/right, but I don't think any sections are long enough to look right like that yet, and it sounds like neither of us want to do the research to extend them for Miami in the near future. You may have noticed in many of the arts my whitham ref (I have a 1949 and 2003 edition of it) is problematic (maybe not) with a small q and a wrong isbn, they will be fixed soon - am trying to ascertain through some libraries what the correct isbn should be - my intel imac and camino browser didnt like shift/q for a while, what fun SatuSuro 11:02, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

The copy that I have has a short isbn, I have been placed in a query queue on the correct number.

BTW the Kelly Basin/Pillinger distinction is a tricky one - if you read blainey p 129 -" This port. sometimes called Pillinger was named after James Kelly" (the north mount lyell railway timetables used kelly basin as the name of the port) so I would suppose I'd challenge your title change on that one - regardless of what current maps might use for instance.i SatuSuro 11:40, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Is what I had issue with - although there is a ghost town by the name of Pillinger, Kelly Basin is also technically a ghost town as well - and was the main usage - as a port and settlement for most of its time - although in contemporary Tasmania the maps probably only have Kelly Basin as a bay in Macquarie Harbour SatuSuro 12:23, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Do you think they were two different towns? Or Pillinger was a town and Kelly Basin was a port/wharf/railway station? Timetables sometimes add to confusion - I've had similar difficulties with Gove Airport (serves Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula, but not a place called "Gove") and Fua'amotu International Airport (serves Nuku'alofa, but is on the opposite side of the island of Tongatapu from that town) showing up in timetables with a variety of names/places. --Scott Davis Talk 12:47, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

The big problem with west coast tasmania -s that there are two arts - the one which is oriented towards the local government authority - wet coast council (as I like to call it - it rained 10 days non stop when I first went to live in queenstown) and the other is the "intro article" which I meant to lead into the range of arts that might exist or be begging to be written. Re expert - Funnily enough nor do I, its just that there's a copy of Blainey next to my keyboard. The thing about pointing out the three separate but linked articles is that
  • West Coast Range as a predominantly geographic article re the features in the higher parts
  • West Coast Tasmania as the local government authority article (i forget the exact rendering of the title)
  • West Coast Tasmania as the linkage and intro to the region (ditto) such as convicts and railways was mentioned as I thought if you had a range of shots they could relate to these three in some way -
anyways - the important thing if in derwent bridge/lake st clair area is to keep warm - Mount Read is currently near 3 degrees c, and the strahan waverider bouy is between 2m to 4 m range - so things shouldnt be too wild tonight :) SatuSuro 12:23, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm currently tucked up in Cradle Valley, indoors and warm :-) I think we're done in the main "West Coast" area, so whatever photos I've got are the ones I can choose from. Tas Reserves

Should all be listed in that list - forgotten actual title of list - I was using the crotty Tasmap (or whatever they are called now) for how they allocate governance over particular reserves - in 2003 the local queenstown dosgbody for the multitasked got dept office in what used to be the mt lyell geology dept (where I used to work some years ago) said the changes in the RFA's at the time were causing a nightmare for understanding the minutiae of whose bit of land was whose on the west coast. sigh SatuSuro 08:39, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

I also am dissatisfied with the west coast range mountain separate mountain articles in that there is an inconsistent style between the various mountains - I do like the box on the rhs in some - but there is room for improvement - any suggestions at all? SatuSuro 08:45, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
The list is Protected areas of Tasmania. It has nothing with "Crotty" in the name, so it may now be called something other than Crotty Conservation Area. The box on the RHS is created by {{Infobox mountain}}. --Scott Davis Talk 13:48, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the work on the Jukes minesite mess - initially the idea had been to have separate articles for the different sites - its definitely staying as one

I know I have a photo of the north side site - and used to have a plan of the east "Lake Jukes" sigte which one of the mt lyell geos gave me when i was working there - ironically Mt Darwin had heaps more small adits thaat didnt show up much beyond the initial drives. Folklore had it when the hydro were sinking the shaft between the dam/intake tower and the power station that they were passing through amazing mineraalised zones - i have no idea if there was ever documentation on that though. I am very encouraged - steady checking of the mess that lay dormant makes me realise there's lots more to do - before I even go into the mine of images somewhere in the shedSatuSuro 10:24, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

I'd really encourage you to try to find maps, charts, plans and historic photos if they're old enough or have suitable licences. They're much harder to find or create than current photos and make articles more interesting. Surely if there are good minerals under the lake they could be extracted by either some sort of dredging if they're near the (ground) surface, or by normal underground mining from a shaft or decline next to the lake if they're deeper? --Scott Davis Talk 10:44, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Heheh, the nature of the geology and the fissures/etc, I suspect that it would be difficult. Talking about this brings back too many memories - Cape Horn - the isolated decline well north of most of the lyell workings and almost as far as the comstock mine on the north west corner of the actual mount lyell mountain - was active mainly in the 70's. when it was abandoned in the late 80's ( i think) the story was that it filled up literally in weeks (!) We used to go down the spiral decline in the ancient diesel landdrovers to do samples in various parts. I suspect that something would have to be very high grade to justify difficult mining conditions. Henty gold mine is such- to think I used to be a gfa working over the area where they are now (!) I have hundreds of photos of the west coast - b&w negs, color slides, color prints - its just the time to scan them etc. Thanks for your encouragement again. SatuSuro 12:39, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I've got a nice one of the penitentiary from the land side, and a couple of the shipbuilding slipways and the remains of the windbreak wall, but they're near high tide, so the water is over them. I thought the current length of the article didn't need many more pictures.

Red Links in West Coast Range - wow - we almost got rid of them - then the hard work, just got the Mount Lyell remediation work (1994-1996) material out of one of the uni llibraries here - some exceellent material, no photos but excellent maps for me to refresh my memory on whole lots of things! The benefit as I see it is in helping the people who might be able to improve the article to discover it's there. How did you find the new Waratah, Tasmania article for example?

I must say Geology of Australia is one of the most unbalanced categories that I have seen yet! Thanks for the cats on Mount Read Volcanics, its the article I have ben dreading - but its the key to the whole mineralisation of west coast tas - and although my concept of cambrian is definitely different from my feeling for the carboniferous (!) - I think this one will be growing slowly. Well, I guess if that's how you feel, but me, WikiCats and Longhair have all advised that the Miami, Queensland article is not up to that standard yet. At the moment, you're the only one who appears to consider that article as a high priority to improve, yet you keep asking and don't visibly respond to the answers. WikiCats has taken the photos, and we have put them on the page. WikiCats has provided other relevant info on the talk page, yet you keep asking for higher levels of support for the article without responding to the obvious shortcomings. There is no doubt the article is in a better state now than it was before you started, so Wikipedia thanks you for your help in that. Broken Hill

Scott,

I am new to Wikipedia but I am going through the entry on Broken Hill to add more about the history etc of the place largely because I am doing some much research on the place for a contract I am doing at work.

I noticed you edited my posting on the railways and cut out my references. As I am new to all this I was wondering why you did this as entrys have to be verifiable don't they? Or is there some exception to the rule?

I certainly did not mean to remove any references! Can you point to a particular edit? (Use history, then a diff link, and paste the whole URL here). I thought your contributions Broken Hill, New South Wales were good, but I added some wikilinks and fixed a few other minor format and style things, I thought. Hi Scott, My source is the New Zealand Official History of the War at: http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-WH2Paci-_N89892.html which states A site for an aerodrome was readily available, and as soon as this was constructed it could become a base for anti-submarine patrols, a refuge for aircraft in distress, and a staging depot for land-based aircraft moving on the long hop over water between New Zealand, Australia and New Caledonia, and the battlefront in the Solomons farther north. The opening of that page says ...the only land on the direct air route between New Zealand and New Caledonia, carries a link in the submarine cable across the Pacific,.... solar tower

hi scott ... flexme here, how are you? long time no see/hear. sorry to desert the solar tower issue before - but i do need to earn a crust and spend family time etc etc. there have been interesting developments which seem to show jdh in a clearer light. a new project has recieved millions in funding in mildura, it is of course exactly what jdh was advertising: a mirror style power plant. i hope it works of course. but i fear that the wikipedia effort was made to divert funds from a much better cause and instead into a "swindle". http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7005311678

Hi Flexme. I've been meaning to go back and at least wind up that discussion about Solar updraft tower, but haven't gotten round to it yet. It will be interesting to see if either or both plants end up being productive. Enviromission had a trading halt after the announcement to "reduce confusion in the market". I couldn't work out from their announcement though whether they have LOST a grant to this new project, or that both projects have funding under the same scheme. Do you have any reason to believe Jdh is associated with the new project? Does it have an article? I understood hat he was pushing Solar power tower technology to drive a traditional steam turbine, whereas this new plant will be photovoltaic. --Scott Davis Talk 22:24, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
