Organization of railroad articles

The question I posted here hasn't gotten much attention, so I thought I'd bring it to you directly. I'm interested in adding some information on, for instance, the Pennsylvania Railroad system, but I'd like to have some input on proper structure before I start adding a large number of articles. OK, let me just give a concrete example to make sure we're on the same page. I'd probably want to subdivide the PRR into divisional units, which is about the largest chunk I'd like to discuss in a comprehensive article, with articles for individual branches spun out as necessary. (This has its own uncertainties — the internal divisional structure was mutable over time — but there's ample data on how it did so.) Some of the "paper corporations" could be dealt with entirely within a single division, and the name of those corporations would redirect to "Pennsylvania Railroad (Foo Division)", where an infobox could be embedded in the article. Others, like the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad or the Connecting Railway were the nominal owners of trackage in more than one division. In that case, I'd "skeletonize" the article on the corporation — strip it down to a mere description of line owned and abandoned and corporate history — and discuss operations at the various division pages, with mutual links between the short paper corporation article and the divisions that actually operated its railroad. This keeps the focus on operations while preserving knowledge of the underlying corporate structure. Choess 19:04, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

A proposal that could affect us highly negatively

See Wikipedia:Attribution. While it would have the desirable-to-me effect of cutting back on all the various station articles (since nobody is going to be able to come up with an acceptable source for a lot of them), it would largely destroy the trains project as it stands if it were strictly enforced. (I notice that the media fancruft is getting a pass-- probably there would be open rebellion if they attempted to demand "proper" sources there.) Mangoe 19:52, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

CTRL (Channel Tunnel Rail Link)

Are you sure this is only of Mid importance? It is vital in that it is about the UK linking up with mainland Europe's rail network through obviously the Channel Tunnel. This plays a quite major role in at least the history of this area. Simply south 19:39, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

For your information: 1. I am working for 25 years in the public relations department of Belgian Railways. And my interst in railways dates from long before that. Thanks to my job I was present and sometime co-organiser in a lot of railway events. I co-organised the belgian part of the official opening of the chunnel and I co-organised the Royal first official Eurostar Brussels>London, ... So for some data I have first hand information.

2. In my aim for perfection in possibilities I found a 'agenda' program that is (almost) perfect for me. All I ever hoped is possible in this program, it recognizes Easter, the last Friday of September each year, ... but also IF conditions: if the normal (agendaà date is Easter move it to the following Sunday, ... Next to the personnal 'agenda' inputs you could select one or more 'chapters', originally meanth for 'holydays' of different countries. I took contact with the maker of the program and he allowed me to make supplementary 'chapters' for his program and to put them available on my website (with a link to his webside, and on his website a link to mine). So I make a many 'chapters', among them: Railways in Belgium, International Railways, ... And because it was available to everyone I have on my website a brief explanation of the sources where I found that data, so everyone can verify that my information is as correct as possible. Much of my chapters are in Dutch, buit more and more come available in English. The chapters are text-files, so you don't need the program to be able to read them. I only want to obtian that my 'chapters' are as correct as possible. I look on the internet and in libraries. I write to organisations when I think I found an error on their site. If they respond I have again a proof: or they explain why their information is correct, or they inform me that they made an error, and so we helped each other. I try to compare to be as shure as I can about the data.

I see a lot of useful information on Wikipedia. But sometimes I think I have better information. So I tried to have a reaction. The only way I found was by editing the page. So thanks for your reaction. If I find other point to discus on Railways, may I write you to examin it?

The Depot at Santa Ana / Santa Ana (Amtrak station)

Hi. I recently created the article Santa Ana (Amtrak station), complete with standard Amtrak station and services infoboxes. I'm pretty sure at least one other user is likely going to add to it soon. As what has been the standard in southern California stations, they've gone by the name "xxxxx (Amtrak station)" or "xxxxx (Metrolink Station)". This is the case with most stations on the Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight routes (see station listings). But I just noticed you made a stub of the same station - The Depot at Santa Ana. How do I create maps for RR project?

Move

I'll move it the other way around as a redirect. Or can you do it as an administrator, so that the history moves with it? There was a revert move funtion, but I don't see it anymore. I am trying to create redirects from full names and vice versa, and find missing middle names for people. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) 17:28, 23 October 2006 (UTC) . Looks like you can just do another move back to the truncated name and then the fullname becomes a redirect!

Don't forget to add people to Category:Missing middle or first names if you need more research to find a missing name from a truncated name.

I have benn trolling from since the 1400s and have been adding the years of birth and death to the persons on year pages and year in "whatever" pages, and linking them to the year page. Long Time No speak

G'day from drought affected oz tralia. trust the rain still falls where you live! There seems to be a heap of 2 foot edits by gwernol - which really goes against the grain as most of the world understands metrics (ha, the old atlantic separation of terminology and technology etc) wondering what you might say to this- also - is there a convention on citing gauge imperial/metric within the rail project at all?
