WP:PROF
You seem to have speedily deleted M. F. Ashby under A7, even though the article contained the information that he was a member of the Royal Society. Please see WP:PROF where you will find such membership listed as the actual most obvious example for what counts as the automatic qualification for notability. It was recreated, quite properly, and went to AfD where it was a snow keep as Michael F. Ashby. DGG (talk) 02:59, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

AFP pie chart
Hey! I was thinking that the AFP pie chart may be a good image to have uploaded on Wikipedia, perhaps for the Knesset or related articles. Would it be free to upload? Thanks for letting me know. --Shamir1 (talk) 02:38, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Purity of Arms
Hello,
I have removed the material but I was wondering from where you dediced the concept dated 1994. Don't we make modifications that take into account it is an older principle. But I don't have any precise idea of its origin (except the Palmach)... Ceedjee (talk) 20:34, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
Border Patrol
This image is not misleading. It specifically states that those are border policemen. It was on a part of the article concerning the Israel Border Police and other alternatives to conscription. This is just an image of border police in action. Explain to me how this is misleading.
Re: 2009 Israeli elections
Hi there. I didn't remove the absentee ballots, I just added them to the regular ballots so that the number of votes listed on the template include both absentee and regular ballots. – Zntrip 22:33, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- I'm really confused now. Here it looks like Kadima got 729,054 votes. Yet on the latest version of the election table, before I altered it there were 758,032 votes for Kadima. If that figures in the 39,003 absentee ballots that you listed, that would mean there would be 719,029 non-absentee ballots cast for Kadima. I can't find that number in either of the sources you provided. I think for now we should just use the Knesset election board site number of 729,054. – Zntrip 22:54, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
- I updated the template with the results from the Knesset election board. I'll notify everyone on the other talk page. – Zntrip 23:20, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

re:Deanb
You can check this user's upload log (or my deletion log) for the last 3 images. These aren't straight forward copyviolations. They were images taken from flickr that had CC licenses, but the licenses were not compatible with wikipedia (they were NC). I wasn't entirely sure if this was deliberately uploading images in violation of their license, or a case of the number of different CC licenses being confusing to Deanb, so I AGF in this case and issued my warning (also, the images were uploaded on Feb 23 and 28, and I felt a block might be stale). But I deleted a large number of this user's uploads a month ago as copyvios, and issued a warning then... so Deanb should have been more careful when it came to uploads. -Andrew c [talk] 00:59, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I do not know of a better way to search flickr. With this user, sometimes searching in Hebrew helps. With the most recent 3 I deleted, it also helped that this time Deanb listed the authors and stated they were from flickr. -Andrew c [talk] 01:11, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Jerusalem Light Rail
Dear Ynhockey,
Thank you very much for getting back to me and adding your input. It is very much appreciated. I have to admit to some discomfort in using secondary (media) sources when primary sources are readily available, however, you are the veteran Wikipedia-ist here so I concede to your experience. On the other hand, the term 'neighbourhood' is one that is politically charged, as it lacks neutrality. In West Jerusalem, the word 'neighbourhood' is suitable. That is not the case in East Jerusalem (or for that matter in the West Bank and the Golan Heights) owing to the fact that its annexation has not been recognised by the UN, and so does not officially belong to the State of Israel. The term used for these communal entities in UN Security Coucil Resolutions (and these are the key references in political science and international law) is 'settlement'. A deviation from this opens up the dialogue for a wide range of disagreement and wording that hold different semantic value, and create a forum where the word 'colony' becomes equally valid. Further, 'neighbourhood' has a fluid, unfixed legal interpretation. By bringing the dialogue down to the term 'neighbourhood' once again frees up - negatively, I might add - the forum for introducing nation states as 'territories' (like 'neighbourhood', a term that may be descriptively correct, but lacks a legal footing when the sovereignty of states is at stake.)
Please rest assured that I will not amend the section. However, the consequence to future dialogue of using politically charged terms such as 'neighbourhood' in this context needs to be seriously considered.
Yours sincerely,

Hebrew poetry?
Hi Ynhockey... it's been a while since we worked together, but you're the only person I could remember off the top of my head who works at the Hebrew Wikipedia. I recently noticed that Modern Hebrew poetry was a(n oft-linked) redirect to Hebrew poetry, but there were no links on the Hebrew poetry dab page to anything applicable to modern poetry. I don't really have any knowledge of the topic myself. Do you think you might be able to write a short stub? Dekimasuよ! 00:59, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

"There seems to be a trend to dismiss sources based on the race or religion of the author"
Hi Ynhockey.
This is probably a honest mistake by you, but I request anyway that you specify what sources have been thusly dismissed and by whom, or else retract your statement. [2] MeteorMaker (talk) 13:01, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
I note you have still not amended your statement that certain editors engage in racial discrimination. It would benefit the discussion if you did (preferrably after reading the relevant discussion pages). [3][4] MeteorMaker (talk) 08:39, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Not to nag or anything, but I still see the unsupported claim "there seems to be a trend to dismiss sources based on language, or the race or religion of the author" here. Could you please either try to back it up with a diff or remove it? MeteorMaker (talk) 20:01, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for the picture at Samakh, Tiberias much appriciated. I´m just trying now to add the Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, James Silk Buckingham and other travellers references that I find in Khalidi (1992) to the different articles, since the old books are mostly on the net now. Regards, Huldra (talk) 22:42, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- well, if I use one of the old books, I always try to provide I link at the bottom, see Samakh,_Tiberias#Bibliography, where there is a link directly to Burckhardt: "Travels in Syria and the Holy Land". Also, if you click on ref. note 7 in the article; p. 275, then it will take you to the page where Burckhardt describes Samakh.
- Otherwise, my "project" has been over at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Palestine/Sources, where we (mostly Nishidani and myself) have tried to collect old books available freely on the net. I did not know that Oliphant was available on the net!! Where? I am VERY interested it! As you can perhaps see from Wikipedia:WikiProject_Palestine/Sources, there are important old books which *should* be (and I am sure, one day will be) available on the net, eg all the books by James Finn, Baldensperger & Oliphant. Please feel free to add links if you like! Huldra (talk) 23:05, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you put a notability tag on this page and I don't understand why. When it comes to English-speaking, baalat teshuva seminaries for college-educated and professional Jewish women, Neve Yerushalayim and EYAHT are the two main schools in Jerusalem. I noted in the lead that EYAHT has 2,000 alumni, which is quite a large number for its size. What more do I need to add? Yoninah (talk) 20:38, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps you can't find it because it's in an apartment building, 22 Imrei Binah St., which is one block down from Zayit Raanan St., between the intersections of Ohalei Yehoshua and Toras Chesed. Many schools and yeshivas start out in apartments and eventually raise money for their own buildings. I guess the school itself is pretty low-key because it subscribes to the same idea of tzniut that it teaches its students. Rebbetzin Weinberg is a well-known and influential role model who primarily works behind the scenes, so it was even hard to find information about her and EYAHT on the internet, aside from the site which one of her donors put up a few years ago. I would like to remove the tag. Yoninah (talk) 10:39, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

as a former editor on the article please have a look in Irgun. there is some ridicilous use of terrorist quotes there in the lead, not like any other article. for example Tom Segev, Churchill (as if you'd expect the british not to call them terrorists), and so on... it's really ridicilous and in contrast to WP:WTA and UNDUE WEIGHT. ה vs. ח
How can transcribing ה and ח exactly the same, with absolutely no differentiation between them, be a "transliteration"? It doesn't make too much sense for modern Hebrew... AnonMoos (talk) 02:10, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- Haifa and Holon are conventionalized exonyms (not transliterations), which is a completely different matter from transliterations. ה and ח were pronounced differently in ancient Hebrew, and are still pronounced differently in modern Israeli Hebrew, so they need to be somehow transcribed differently for most purposes in articles (other than the use of standard accepted exonyms). I'm not attached to "kh" in particular, but failing to distinguish between ה and ח is not acceptable. AnonMoos (talk) 16:31, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Recipient pages
Hi again Ynhockey, how are you? I was wondering if you know how I can find individual Israel Prize recipient pages in Hebrew like the one you used for the Ram Karmi page.[5] I want to find ones for the Avraham Yaski, and Arieh Sharon pages but can't seem to. Can you help? Regards, DVD 05:28, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for looking. Maybe when I have a little more time I can start the articles for Ya'akov Ya'ar and Ada Karmi-Melamed, or you can if you feel like it. I want to expand the Avraham Yaski page today and send it to DYK and I also want to nominate the Arieh Sharon page for DYK after more refs are added, do you have time to help find any? Some in Hebrew would be nice. Regards, DVD 19:19, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for looking. No I can't find that book. I'd like to buy it and more books from Israel- like "Kibbutz + Bauhaus" with which I would help add more cites to the Arieh Sharon article. DVD 01:43, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Nice! I'd like to convince User:Arielaloni to upload on commons and use WP:OTRS for their images, which I think would make them more secure (one has a deletion template on it now) but I feel like I've been on their talk page to much so far and am not so great with images on WP myself. Btw, I'm about to nominate the articles for DYK. Regards, DVD 22:23, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
map question
Hi Ynhockney, regarding this template, would you object to creating a duplicate so that one carries the description 'in Israel' and the other 'in the Palestinian territories'? It would help avoid issues such as Susya which currently shows as being 'in Israel and the Palestinian territories'. Nableezy (talk) 21:49, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- I tried messing with the caption on the article but it seems that the alt text is determined by the name in the template. Just seems like a relatively trivial solution that would dissolve some issues. Peace, Nableezy (talk) 22:49, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't want to change it on the template level, I was looking to see if there was a way to change it on an article by article basis, like a default in the template and a way to override it in the article. I've tried looking at the documentation but can't find much outside of Template:Location map, specifcally this example but using the alt text within the article doesn't seem to do anything. I admit, I haven't much of a clue as to how these things work together, but I think you could see why somebody would object to the alt text showing that Nablus is in Israel. To repeat, I am not looking to change the template or cause any type of issue where the very useful alt text is somehow disabled, just trying to find a solution to a problem that seems way too small for well-intentioned people to fight over. Nableezy (talk) 23:03, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
just noticed this, thanks for clearing the ambiguity. Nableezy (talk) 20:16, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Proposal for compromise
So… I had an idea (or rather, cribbed an idea from Nishidani). What if, instead of topic-banning some of the most useful, articulate, and involved editors in the IP area (on both sides) for a year, you all got together and worked on Judea, Samaria, and Judea and Samaria with the goal of promoting them into GA status in two months’ time? That way (and given the relatively public nature of the arb case), there would hopefully be wide-ranging and neutral community input – sort of an RfC on steroids. If you all did not succeed, it would be back to the arb case (which would be placed on hiatus pending the outcome). The arbs (some of them anyway) seem to be saying you all can’t work together. I don’t think that’s true, and I also think that to the extent it is true, the possibility of avoiding more unpleasantness in this arb case might lead to extra flexibility and reasonableness. In the interest of full disclosure: I don’t particularly care at all how the ultimate content issue falls out -- Judea, Samaria, West Bank, Elbonia, whatever: I’d just like to avoid a mass-banning that would have a seriously deleterious effect on IP articles. What say? (If you wish to reply, you may do so here) IronDuke 02:23, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Factually accurate???????????????????????????????????????????????????
I'm surprised that you are under the impression that tagging a factually inaccurate article as factually inaccurate is so how inappropriate...removing 2 records of Palestinian dead from one article was easier than adding the many hundreds that would be needed to get the article anywhere near NPOV...It seems more appropriate to have 2 time lines until the Palestinian dead can be more accurately incorporated...it took long enough doing just the Hebron time line...I'd have thought getting rid some of some of the pertinent tags would be better....Ashley kennedy3 (talk) 16:31, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure you understand POV...as you have the articles on watch and yet did nothing about trying to put them in any sort of usable condition...you do not seem to like to tag Israeli extremist POV and inaccuracies...yet complain when the patent blatant inaccuracies are tagged...that is not drive by or POV fork, the articles in question are the POV fork and yet you have done nothing...your silence on the subject of the inaccuracies speaks far more eloquently of your POV than any of your wiki lawyering....The articles are about one subject.. the title did not accurately reflect the content, the content did not even remotely try to reflect the title the articles are a sham masquerading as an Israeli POV because the articles don't even come close to what an average Israeli knows. I know that all the Palestinian dead are not reported on in Israeli papers but at least Israeli are aware the Palestinians die in the conflict. Those articles were not even close to the average Israeli perceptions The articles are a racist endeavour to portray Palestinians as a non-people where the articles named only alleged palestinian terrorists as though the "only good Palestinian is a dead Palestinian". Defend your position all you want but it is not giving a very good image of yourself....Ashley kennedy3 (talk) 17:40, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

conspiracy theories
Hi Ynhockey, in your evidence submission for the Arbcom on Judea and Samaria you describe Nishidani's pattern of formulating "conspiracy theories" about your edits. What's the alleged conspiracy, and who does he theorize that you're conspiring with? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious; I just can't figure out what you're talking about.--G-Dett (talk) 03:14, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- That should be obvious. Nishidani seems to believe (or at least seemed to at the time that I posted the evidence) that there is some kind of hidden conspiracy in my maps to introduce an 'expansionist' POV to Wikipedia through various subtleties on maps. By 'conspiracy theory' I mean a theory that a secret and malicious plot is taking place (i.e. not necessarily a conspiracy literally, which must involve many people). I was actually going to modify the evidence per Nishidani's recent apology, but was convinced not to after some of his other recent actions (more on that as it develops). -- Ynhockey (Talk) 08:19, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- A secret and malicious plot by one person? If I understand you correctly, you just mean that Nishidani failed to assume good faith. If that's right, would you consider changing your post to reflect that? AGF failures are very different from, and less serious than, "conspiracy theories."--G-Dett (talk) 22:33, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
We're on the same side
Hi Ynhockey, We're on the same side. You have done and continue to do good work on Wikipedia. I applaud your contribution and see no reason why we shouldn't be able to work together. But we need to concentrate on what we do best. My forte is writing, copy-editing and organizing content. If the formatting is not perfect, well, that's what collaboration is for. Certainly my intention is not to "force" you to do anything! Best, --Gilabrand (talk) 10:29, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Arb comment
Is that an explanation? I can't tell if you are saying that he should have put all of his proposals in one section, or what. Without any evidence of personal attacks or bad faith, or discernible reasoning to support your comment, I'm left wondering why you would even raise the topic. Mackan79 (talk) 07:23, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I don't think I can agree that one-line jabs at other editor's good faith are the way to go. But surely you're aware that numerous editors have presented evidence on individual editors, and that this is standard practice? And yet even you pick just one to criticize for doing this. It's an ad hominem in any case, and I think the kind of comment these cases would be much better without. Mackan79 (talk) 07:37, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

yeah, i was trying to use the palestine map to use the correct grey scale, i reverted back to the israel map till i can figure out how the center is calculated. i think it should be fine now though, could you rerevert and look how it is with the other map? Nableezy (talk) 21:35, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- I was using the numbers in the description page of the image. it seems i made a mess in trying to do too much, i swear it was working properly when i just used the israel map (everything was in the right place), i got it right on the template now, but not so much in the article, working on it now. Nableezy (talk) 21:40, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- I think it is right now, could you check Rafah? Nableezy (talk) 21:42, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- I would like to use the smaller one, but for now better to be right than have a stubborn insistence on it. If you could help with that it would be much appreciated, I just needed to get Rafah out of the Mediterranean for now, since that is done I'll go back to working on the coords. Is there a type of template sandbox I should use or just a subpage in my own userspace? Nableezy (talk) 21:47, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

hate to impose further, but if you wouldn't mind taking a look at this diff. The original is the current Palestinian municipality template, the diff are planned changes. There seems to be an issue with how the coordinates are defined in the original, so I cleaned that up off the kibbutz infobox. Also added the pushpin map info from the same infobox. Would be greatly appreciated if somebody with some experience in these things would look at it and make sure I wont be screwing anything up on a template that is transcluded on a lot of pages. I based the mandate map off File:PalestineAndTransjordan.png. Are you talking about the area SW of the Sea of the Galilee? I thought I got it right, but if you have a map showing the mistake let me know and will try to fix it. Nableezy (talk) 00:05, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- My intended meaning was lost in the above, I used the map of Israel as a base and removed borders based on the file linked above. So you are saying the Golan Heights were a part of Mandatory Palestine and not the French Mandate of Syria? The maps I have seen show that as a part of the French Mandate, do you have an outside source showing this? Thanks, Nableezy (talk) 00:15, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- I will take a look and try to fix it, it is not being used anywhere outside of my sandbox for now though. Nableezy (talk) 13:58, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Hows it look now? Let me know if you see any outstanding issues. Thanks, Nableezy (talk) 00:22, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- I did purposefully remove the Syria/Lebanon border, keep it all in the French Mandate. I did want to separate Transjordan from the rest of the mandate, but maybe the solid line is not the way to go. What would you think of making that border a dashed line? I will look at the Saudi border, see what I can do. Thanks for all your help, it truly is appreciated. Nableezy (talk) 16:32, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
InkScape is awesome for SVG editing. The GUI combined with the XML editor makes modifying these things relatively easy. It is incredibly simple to change the type of line from solid to dotted to dashed to whatever with the XML editor. I will get a map with the Jordanian border dashed when I get home from work. Any place you would like me to upload or just overwrite the current and if there is a problem revert? Nableezy (talk) 17:32, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- speaking of watching, is there any way to have things in a commons watchlist show up in the en wiki's watchlist? Thought you might know. Nableezy (talk) 17:40, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- dash done, looking for a map showing the transjordan/saudi border for that modification. Not sure how I should adjust for shrinking seas though. Nableezy (talk) 00:09, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'll get the border right tonight. Thanks for the tool, but it is already pretty quick and easy to do it manually. I only added the map to a few of the localities, most of the articles are too short. Mostly just been putting the coords into the infobox. But thanks, and I will work on the map later on tonight. - and brought the width down by 20% Nableezy (talk) 00:06, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- hows it look now? based it off this map of 1923, and thanks for the tool, started using it and made it a lot easier. Nableezy (talk) 01:05, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
2009 Israel Defense Forces T-shirt affair new AFD
When do you think would be a good time to submit 2009 Israel Defense Forces T-shirt affair for another AFD? Wikifan12345 (talk) 22:43, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Chariots of Fire, & etc.
Yes, I do. Time to read and edit, of course, always limited...Historicist (talk) 14:06, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Back in December of 2008, you deleted an article on Ben Braun under speedy A7. If there was any content there, is there any way that you could userfy that for me? I'm pretty sure the article was deleted in error, and while the article has been recreated, I think the old one was far more complete, so I'd like to try and bring it back up to snuff. Thanks! --fuzzy510 (talk) 17:14, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Bad faith
You wrote on the talk page of killings and massacres of the 1948 war that I had only new historian litterature and that I was of bad faith and not neutral. Ceedjee (talk) 06:08, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

"quest for legitimacy"
Shalom,
Stating some Israelis follow a "quest for legitimacy" in the mouth of a politician may mean that some Israel actions were unlegitimate. But in the mouth of a sociologist or an historian, it doesn't necessarely and here, it doesn't at all.
Some sociologists consider a part of the Israeli population suffer a soft version of the Masssadah complex, having the feeling they are unjustifiedly accused for all they do, have done or will do and as a consequence expecting "legitimacy" for... being and -what they consider- have to do due to circumstances.
The problem is that they are not told what they want to hear. On the political level, in Europe mainly and in the US too, nobody will say Israeli response against the Palestinians is fair or is right, even despite the suicide bombings. The main current policy of European government is that they don't want to take party and it is very important, in a conflict, there is a 3rd side who don't take party at all.
It doesn't mean Israeli are guilty but -of course- given they are civilised, Israelis wonder if... and some parts of the Israeli population would like to hear : "please, go. we understand". It doesn't mean that what they do is unlegitimate.
But some Israelis want to hear more and the Israelis goverment transfer the message. They claim "Look. We have the purity of arms. We are not monsters. You have to support us and condemn them !" The facts European governments don't answer and/or agree, don't mean they disagree. They just mean that in the I/P conflict, both Israelis and Palestinians are responsible of what they do and they have to live with what have been done. They are adult. They have to solve their problems, whereas the best other can do is not to take party.
As a sociologist historian, Avi Shlaim explains that purity of arms (which has been used widely in this "quest for legitimicy" I have just described) is a myth of the '48 war. He is right and there are no controversies. Which one ? He doesn't say that Israel is unlegitimate for whatever.
I will provide you quotes from tradiotionnal Israeli sociologists concerning that matter. Ceedjee (talk) 07:46, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
