WFGI-FM, known as "Froggy 95 FM", is a Froggy branded Country music formatted radio station in Pennsylvania serving the Johnstown area. The station is owned and operated by Forever Broadcasting, LLC.

History

The station began at 96.5 now WKYE as WJNL-FM in the 1970s as the sister station to WJNL-AM. They played easy to listen to music and had news updates hourly. It was known as this until it was purchased in 1996 by Clear Communications. When it became 96.5 the mountain with the callsign WMTZ and began playing Country Music. In 2005 Clear Communications decided to leave the Johnstown area and sold its properties in Johnstown to Altoona based Forever Broadcasting. Forever wanted to expand its Froggyland into the Pittsburgh area and the 96.5 dial was not able to do so. The 95.5 dial was able to with no problem, so in February 2005 the station became Froggy 95 as it is still today.

Signal Abilities

WFGI has a very strong signal that can be heard as far west as western suburbs of Pittsburgh and even eastern Ohio and as far east as Mifflin County, where it starts conflicting with WMRF on 95.7 FM from Lewistown. In recent years however the coverage area has faded, due to short space same and adjacent stations and also weather conditions having effect on coverage presumably from flora.

Multipath Issues WFGI has always suffered from signal degradation in the city of license, primarily because of the excessive height above the city as well as multipath caused buy the local terrain of the Allegheny plateau. A drive along US219 will provide multiple areas of static and multipath causing the station to be unlistenable.

Controversy

On February 4, 2014, Forever Broadcasting, the stations parent company, fired one of their station DJ's through no fault of her own. Nancy Lane, otherwise known as Daisy, had been notified in a written statement that she had been fired from her job not due to her performance, but due to the actions of her ex husband George Lucas Lane who is currently in prison for impersonating police. He has been threatening the company where she had worked for several months. An earlier incident showed that he had hired someone to slash tires on several station vehicles overnight, as well as sent e-mail threats to Nancy, her family, and co-workers, and the station felt that the actions of her ex husband posed a liability to the station which led to the termination. After substantial media coverage various efforts are underway to boycott advertisers of WFGI and sister station WRKW.
