We Never Learn (ぼくたちは勉強ができない, Bokutachi wa Benkyō ga Dekinai), also known as Bokuben, is a Japanese shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Taishi Tsutsui. It started serializing in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine on February 6, 2017 with the individual chapters collected and published by Shueisha into twelve tankōbon volumes as of June 2019[update].[3] Viz Media licensed the manga in North America and serialized it in their digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.[4] On March 30, 2018, Viz Media announced that it will publish the manga in print later that year.[5] Shueisha began to simulpublish the series in English on the website and app Manga Plus in January 2019. An anime television series adaptation by Studio Silver and Arvo Animation aired from April 7 to June 30, 2019. A second season is set to premiere in October 2019. The series is licensed by Aniplex of America.[6]
Plot
The manga follows the story of Nariyuki Yuiga, a senior high school student attending Ichinose Academy, as he tutors three geniuses of different subjects in order to secure a university scholarship. Fumino Furuhashi is a genius in literature, but horrible at mathematics; Rizu Ogata is a genius in mathematics, but terrible at literature; and Uruka Takemoto is a genius in the athletic field, but dreadful at all other subjects. As the girls work with Nariyuki to achieve their academic goals, they must also deal with their growing feelings for him.

Main
- Nariyuki Yuiga (唯我 成幸, Yuiga Nariyuki)
- Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka[7]
- A third-year student and the main protagonist. In order to provide for his poor family, Nariyuki seeks to obtain his school's special VIP nomination, a scholarship which waives all future university tuition fees. He receives the nomination, but is given the arduous task of getting three fellow classmates into their universities of choice. His focus on studies was inspired by his late father, who died just before he entered junior high school. He also has a natural talent for getting into compromising situations with all the girls and Miss Kirisu.
- Fumino Furuhashi (古橋 文乃, Furuhashi Fumino)
- Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi[7]
- A third-year student and a genius in the fields of arts and literature. Despite her mediocre skills in mathematics, Fumino wishes to pursue a degree in astronomy in order to search for a certain star, which she believes is the reincarnation of her late mother. Her father is a university mathematics professor. Fumino has had a strained relationship with her father ever since her mother's death ten years prior. However, with Nariyuki's support, they are finally able to reconcile. She is also "tutoring" Nariyuki on the secrets of a girls heart, and while supporting Rin and Ogata's crushes on Nariyuki, develops feelings for him as well.
- Rizu Ogata (緒方 理珠, Ogata Rizu)
- Voiced by: Miyu Tomita[7]
- A third-year student and a genius in the fields of mathematics and science. Rizu finds difficulty in understanding emotions, which inspired her decision to pursue a degree in psychology and overcome her own weakness. She is also passionate about board and card games, an interest fueled by gifts she had received from her late grandmother. She has never won a single game, blaming her endless losing streak on her inability to read people. Her family runs an udon shop, which she occasionally helps run.
- Uruka Takemoto (武元 うるか, Takemoto Uruka)
- Voiced by: Sayumi Suzushiro[7]
- A third-year student and a swimming prodigy. Uruka dreams of becoming an Olympic athlete and seeks to earn an athletic scholarship. However, due to her poor academics, she is placed under Nariyuki's tutelage to help improve her English skills and become a more well-rounded student. She has had a crush on Nariyuki since middle school, but continuously struggles to confess her feelings towards him and when she does confess he mistakes it for her using him in place of someone else. Later in the series, she receives a scholarship opportunity from an Australian university.
- Mafuyu Kirisu (桐須 真冬, Kirisu Mafuyu)
- Voiced by: Lynn[8]
- A teacher at Ichinose Academy, and Rizu and Fumino's first tutor. Her opinions on education are very strong, and feels it is a waste of ability to not pursue a path that takes advantage of one's natural talents. She was formerly an aspiring figure skater who retired from the sport after being inspired to pursue a career in teaching by Nariyuki's father. While Mafuyu comes off as cold and callous, she cares deeply about her students and wants them to succeed. Despite her professional demeanor while on the job, she is a complete slob at home, is afraid of cockroaches, and a lightweight drinker.
- Asumi Kominami (小美浪 あすみ, Kominami Asumi)
- Voiced by: Madoka Asahina[8]
- An alumna of Ichinose Academy and a rōnin student. She is often mistaken for a middle school student due to her petite stature. She aspires to attend the national medical university, despite her lackluster grades in science, in order to support her father's medical clinic. She first meets Nariyuki during cram school, and enjoys teasing him flirtatiously, much to his embarrassment. To pay for her cram school lessons and medical school entrance exam fee, she works at a maid café called High Stage.

- Voiced by: Saori Ōnishi
- A third-year student and the president of the chemistry club. She is obsessed over Rizu to the point of exhibiting stalker-like behavior.
- Miharu Kirisu (桐須 美春, Kirisu Miharu)
- The younger sister of Mafuyu and an amateur figure skater. She greatly admires her older sister, and wishes for Mafuyu to leave her teaching job and return to figure skating.

Manga
Written and illustrated by Taishi Tsutsui, We Never Learn was launched in the 10th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine on February 6, 2017.[9] Viz Media announced their license of the manga for English release in North America in April 2017, which serializes it digitally in their Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.[4] Shueisha began to simultaneously publish the series in English on the website and app Manga Plus in January 2019.
Light novel
The series got a light novel entitled Bokutachi wa Benkyō ga Dekinai hi Nichijō no Reidai-shū, published on April 4, 2019 by Shueisha under their JUMP j-BOOKS imprint.[10]
Anime
An anime television series adaptation was announced in the 39th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 27, 2018. The anime series is directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki and written by Gō Zappa, featuring co-animation by Studio Silver and Arvo Animation and character designs by Masakatsu Sasaki.[11] Masato Nakayama is composing the music.[7] The series aired from April 7 to June 30, 2019 on Tokyo MX, Gunma TV, Tochigi TV, BS11, AT-X, MBS, and TV Aichi.[8][12][a] The opening theme is "Seishun Seminar" (セイシュンゼミナール) and the ending theme is "Never Give It Up!!"; both are performed by Haruka Shiraishi, Miyu Tomita, and Sayumi Suzushiro under the name Study.[13] Aniplex of America licensed the series for distribution under the title We Never Learn: BOKUBEN, and is streaming the series on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and FunimationNow.[14] In Australia and New Zealand, AnimeLab is streaming the series in the region.[15] After the series' finale, a second season has been announced, and it is set to premiere in October 2019.[16] An OVA episode will be bundled with the manga's 14th volume to be released on November 1, 2019.[17]

Reception
On May 2018, the manga reached 1 million volumes sold. On February 2019, the sales reached 2 million volumes sold, including digital sales.[21][22]
