The Web Open Font Format (WOFF) is a font format for use in web pages. It was developed during 2009 and is on its way to being standardized as the recommended web font format by the World Wide Web Consortium Web Fonts Working Group.

It is "a strong favourite" for standardization by the W3C Web Fonts Working Group.[2] Following the submission of WOFF for standardization by Mozilla Foundation, Opera Software ASA and Microsoft in April 2010[3], the W3C commented that it expects WOFF to soon become the "single, interoperable format" supported by all browsers.[4] The W3C published WOFF as a working draft on July 27, 2010.[5]

Specification

WOFF is essentially a wrapper that contains sfnt-based fonts (TrueType (TTF), OpenType, or Open Font Format) that have been compressed using a WOFF encoding tool to enable them to be embedded in a web page.[6] The format uses zlib compression (specifically, the compress2 function),[6] typically resulting in a filesize reduction from TTF of over 40%.[7]

Vendor support

The format has received the backing of many of the main font foundries[8] and is supported in Firefox since version 3.6.[9]

Microsoft added full support for WOFF in the third platform preview of Internet Explorer 9.[10]

WebKit development builds support WOFF,[11][12] so Google Chrome and Safari will do so in future releases.[13]
