About the event

[edit]

This event is the 19th hack weekend facilitated by Code The City in Aberdeen. All our events are built on the use of data and tech for social good. Each has a central theme. This one's is the history of Aberdeen and the North East.

We've identified or had partner organisations suggest a number of potential challenges & opportunities, outlined below, which we could address at the weekend. Most likely all except the first in this list will involve working with WikiData, Wiki Commons or Wikipedia.

  • Aberdeen Harbour Arrivals
  • Listed Buildings in Aberdeen
  • Aberdeen Provosts and Lord Provosts
  • Cinemas and Theatres of Aberdeen (building on this previous event)
  • Aberdeen March Stones
  • Current and historic entities of Aberdeen (Schools, Hospitals, Cemeteries, Poor Houses, Businesses)

There will be great wifi, and we'll provide breakfast and lunch. All you need is a laptop, if you'll be using one, or your phone or camera.

We'll kick off with some teas, coffees and pastries for breakfast and we'll stop at lunchtime for sandwiches and soft drinks. We'll finish off Saturday with some pizzas and drinks, and break until Sunday when we start all over again. .

ALL WELCOME – no experience necessary, but basic computer literacy is preferable.

* Please bring a laptop you are comfortable using.

Work list

[edit]

This list is under construction

Listed Buildings

[edit]

Of the 2016 Aberdeen listed buildings / structures on Wiki Data it transpires that 1845 of them have no image associated with them. See this map. There is an opportunity for keen photographers to capture high quality pictures of these, upload them to WikiCommons and link the Wiki Data entries. There are multiple ways to do this and full training will be given.

Provosts and Lord Provosts

[edit]

This role goes back to 13th Century and there have been almost 300 post holders. Yet fewer than 20 have Wikipedia articles and there are only 6 in Wikidata) See https://w.wiki/GeH. Using the out of copyright book "Memorials of the aldermen, provosts, and Lord provosts of Aberdeen, 1272-1895", improve on both the WikiPedia articles and get a complete list into Wikidata.

Cinemas and Theatres

[edit]

Continue the work on the Cinemas and Theatres of Aberdeen that we started at our Editathon in  August 2019. We'll have representatives from the Aberdeen City Library Service here to help with resources.

Aberdeen's March Stones

[edit]

There are 67 March Stones or boundary stones around Aberdeen.  65 with numbers inscribed on them plus one called "Alpha' and one 'Omega'. These have a rich history. It appears that there are 65 of them on Wikidata and only nine of those have photographs.

We need to identify the missing two! These resources may help:

While the Crabstane and the Langstane have Wikipedia entries we need to create a good wikipedia article on the stones as a group.

Wikidata: Schools, Hospitals, Cemeteries

[edit]

There are loads of opportunities to improve Wikidata to ensure that all hospitals, schools, cemeteries, workhouses, bridges and other things (current and historic) are represented in Wikidata. This will aid linked data queries - such as "How many Provosts of Aberdeen are buried in St. Peter's Cemetery?"

For example contrast this map of NE hospitals through time with this list from Wikidata.

The list of cemeteries in Aberdeen on Wikidata has fifteen items. FindAGrave lists 32 of them, whereas Aberdeen City Council lists seventeen of them.

Similarly, the number of bridges returned by an Open Street Map query far outnumbers the number of bridges currently in Wikidata for Aberdeen.
