3	2023 AFC Asian Cup	968,589	Qatar again receives a big football event, and again with some delays to avoid scorching desert temperatures (hence why it's labeled 2023 but started in the following year). This week the third round of the group stage will reduce the 24 teams to the 16 of the knockout rounds, with two of the ones chasing a spot including Palestine, who certainly need some relief, and India, who are always in this Report and usually prefer lawn sports with bats or sticks.
4	Australian Open	936,821	The 112th edition of the tennis tournament started in Melbourne this week.

6	The Beekeeper (2024 film)	848,821	Jason Statham had four movies in 2023 alone (albeit one would've come out in 2022 if not for the Russian invasion of Ukraine), and he already started this year's quota of beating up people in David Ayer's (pictured) The Beekeeper, playing a black ops agent who wanted to retire raising bees, but turns to vengeance once his neighbor kills herself for losing her money in a phishing scam. Reviewers praised the straightforward approach with brutal action guided by an easy, compelling plot, and The Beekeeper has already made more money worldwide ($75 million) than the movie it opened opposite to: a musical remake of Mean Girls ($66 million) which was the first entry off the list.
7	Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571	834,609	45 people flew together into the Andes, but only 16 survived. Society of the Snow is the latest film to document the crash.
8	Hanu Man	829,891	The first Indian film hit of 2024 comes from the Telugu film industry. This well-received mythological superhero film starring Teja Sajja marks the beginning of yet-another cinematic universe, proving once again how much the MCU formula has taken over Indian pop-culture.
9	Africa Cup of Nations	788,206	Another continental tournament of football featuring the wrong year in the latest edition, as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was delayed to January 2024 due to adverse weather conditions in the Ivory Coast. A few traditional teams have been underperforming, like Ghana, Cameroon, Tunisia, and Algeria, who also saw one of its supporters be deported after insulting the host nation.
10	Christina Applegate	753,336	The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were supposed to happen in September but were delayed to this month due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. The first category, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, was co-presented by this actress who retired due to multiple sclerosis that downright forced her to walk the stage with a cane, and her appearance was met with an standing ovation.
11	Martin Luther King Jr.	699,106	The birthday of this chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the American civil rights movement is observed on the third Monday of January every year. It was made a national holiday in 1983, fifteen years after King's assassination in 1968.
12	Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire	695,879	The biggest Telugu film hit of 2023 was released on Netflix on 20th January. Expect sustained interest in the article as streaming viewers keep coming to this page to make sense of its convoluted plot about a fictional kingdom named Khansaar, that's impossible to sum up in 700 words. At one point, while hearing about Khansaar's history, the film's leading lady, Shruti Haasan remarks, "Wait, wait wait... I need a drink!" So do we.

14	True Detective (season 4)	692,310	The fourth season of this pop-culture defining anthology mystery show has a subtitle, Night Country, for the first time. This season stars the ever-reliable Jodie Foster playing a detective after 33 years since she tracked down a serial killer in The Silence of the Lambs. Interest in this article should sustain till the end of February, when the finale airs.
15	Jordan Love	690,075	The starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers led his team to a stunning upset of the Dallas Cowboys 48–32 on January 14. However, the Packers' journey in the 2023–24 NFL playoffs ended the next game when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers on January 20.
16	The Bear (TV series)	663,322	The Bear and its star White dominated the "comedy" categories at both last week's Golden Globe Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards. White's co-star Ayo Edebiri also won at both ceremonies.

19	Killers of the Flower Moon (film)	628,198	Martin Scorsese's elegy on the Osage Indian murders makes its way on to Apple TV+ after a semi-successful theatrical run. Viewership on streaming should be way better for this powerful epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, the latter of whom is enjoying much awards season success (even if she was snubbed at the BAFTAs).
20	Poor Things (film)	601,598	Another awards season success after #19 is this surreal black comedy from director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, making their second collaboration after their previous black comedy The Favourite. For the 2024 Academy Award for Best Actress race, it's Stone vs Gladstone.
21	Shoaib Malik	592,039	Celebrity news from India's neighbor Pakistan, as the former captain of the national cricket team married an award-winning actress on January 19.

24	Napoleon	576,296	Ridley Scott's biographical film about the rise, fall and frustratingly little else (this probably would have fitted better as a television series) of Emperor Bonaparte was released on Apple TV+ on January 9. Scott has promised a four-hour director's cut.
25	Vivek Ramaswamy	569,104	This American entrepreneur of Indian Hindu ancestry suspended his presidential campaign after the Iowa caucuses, and endorsed Donald Trump.
