About the event

Join us to celebrate lives & contributions of the suffragettes and all the incredible women missing from Wikipedia!

The University's Information Services team will run a Wikipedia edit-a-thon focusing on improving the quality of articles about notable women; with a particular focus on women associated with Edinburgh.

Have you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others?
As of 4 March 2019 only about 17.73% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. Not impressed?

No prior knowledge is required. You’ll learn how to edit Wikipedia and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles of their choice related to notable women missing from Wikipedia. NB: Please bring a laptop along to the event or email me at ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk if you require to borrow one for the event.

How do I prepare?

• Sign up for the event
• Create a Wikipedia account
• Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided)
• Learn about editing if you like via our Wiki Basics tutorial.
• Think about what you would like to edit - there are some suggested pages below we think could and should be created but you are more than welcome to prepare some materials to bring with you on the day.

First things first

• Create your Wikipedia account if you haven't yet.
• Join the Outreach Dashboard so we can pull all today's edits together in one place. Click Allowto marry your Wikipedia account with the Dashboard page.
• Would you like to create a Histropedia timeline like this? Well, you can.
• You can use the PrepBio tool to create short stub articles from Wikidata entries.
• You can also join WikiProject Women in Red who host virtual editathons every month to improve the representation of notable women online. As of 4 March 2019, the percentage of biographies is just 17.73%
• You can use exemplar biographies as your base for writing your article e.g. Mary Blathwayt or just copy the text into your sandbox to modify from Draft biography

Use the PrepBio tool

• The PrepBio tool is very handy for creating stub entries on Wikipedia using the structured data information in Wikidata.

• 11am-11.15am - Housekeeping and Welcome.
• 11:15am-11:30am - Gender and Equality PhD Intern, Francesca Vavotici.
• 11:30am-12:45pm- Wikipedia training.
• 12:45am-1pm - Room shuffle.
• 1pm-2pm Lunch and naming ceremony for the Brenda Moon room.
• 2pm-4:30pm – EDIT (and badge making).
• 4:30pm-5pm – Publish.
• 5pm – Close.

Then you can check how long it takes for your new page to appear in Google's top ten results!

Helpful updates could be as simple as: Making sure reference links are still appropriate and functional; Adding new inline citations/references; Adding a photo; Adding an infobox; Adding data to more fields in an existing infobox; Creating headings; Adding categories; etc.
