Table within a scrollbox?

Resolved
Cureden 13:14, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

I have a scrollbox on my userpage, and I would like to replace the contents with a table. Is this possible? This is an example of what I've tried:

{{scrollbox|height=50px|text=
{| class="wikitable"
|-
! Header 1
! Header 2
|-
| cell 1.1
| cell 1.2
|-
| cell 2.1
| cell 2.2
|}
}}

but all I get is:

{

Is it possible to embed a table in a scrollbox? Thanks. --Bruce1eetalk 08:26, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Actually, I've since done away with the scrollboxes on my userpage altogether, but I'd still like to know if a table can be embedded in a scrollbox. --Bruce1eetalk 11:25, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
There is another way to make a scrollbox by using <div> tags instead of the {{scrollbox}} template (see Wikipedia:User_page_design_center/Style#Scroll_boxes) and that does work.
header 1 header 2 header 3
row 1, cell 1 row 1, cell 2 row 1, cell 3
row 2, cell 1 row 2, cell 2 row 2, cell 3
This style of scrollbox comes up the same as the other, as far as I know. Cureden 13:21, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll file this away for future reference. BTW I saw the "Scroll boxes" section in Wikipedia:User page design center/Style, but I just assumed it used {{scrollbox}}. I should have looked at the code! --Bruce1eetalk 14:42, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Alignment

I need help with the alingment of my user page can some one please help me. to see the problem go to my user page--Dcheagle (talk) 23:14, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

What happened to my Talk Page? I tried to make a new User Page (the old one had no content), and now my old Talk Page is gone. Yours in puzzlement, GeorgeLouis (talk) 07:42, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Your user page redirects to your talk page, so when you clicked on your userpage, it brought you to your talk page, which you then blanked. I've deleted the redirect and restored your talk page. ;) Cureden 12:52, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Cool. How did that Redirect occur? GeorgeLouis (talk) 14:19, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Looking at the page history, it was redirected in 2006. I have no idea why. :D Cureden 14:36, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Mysterious font size problem

I am trying to make the font size in the userboxes on my userpage draft look like those on my actual userpage. Current time?

I'm trying to get my user talk page to display the current time, as it is to me, which is UTC -6 year round. I've tried {{Utc | -6}} which works fine, but doesn't update, and I can't find anything else which works. {{Time}} has a CST time zone, but it automatically adds daylight saving time. Userbox

I was experiment with customization, and I ran into a small issue: Userboxes. As you can see by my user page, I managed to jury-rig a box. Does anyone know how to add more fields that display? Linuxzarth (R) 00:04, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

I have to say I'd really like to know, too. I've been trying to find a guide to userboxes for the last hour or so. A month or so ago I saw a user's page where he even had his nationality in his userbox. I'd really love to know how to do that. I think it would be awesome if someone could create a guide to userboxes, and all of the elements that can be used in them.

Confirmed User

Hi. Can an admin please make me a confirmed user, so that I can upload a couple of fair use pix (that can be uploaded to wp, but not wiki commons)? This is time sensitive, as it relates to a band that is up for an 2009 MTV Video Music Award in a few days. Many thanks.--VMAsNYC (talk) 07:11, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Um, first of all this page is for userpage technical questions, not administrative stuff. For that go to the Administrator's Notice Board. Second of all getting autoconfirmed in impossible to duplicate so an admin can't help you there. You just have to edit until you get confirmed. ResMar 13:35, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
The correct place to go is not WP:AN but WP:RFPERM. Secondly, it is possible to duplicate the autoconfirmed permission (this is called confirmed) but it is rarely granted. All you really have to do is make 10 edits (wherever), and wait four days to become autoconfirmed. Intelligentsium 23:40, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Text Alignment Problems

I am currently building my new userpage in my Sandbox. So far it is extremely complicated (to me) and I barely understand the formatting. If you go to the Sandbox, you can see my first sentence doesn't actually go to the end of the space. I was wondering if anyone could fix this, or even slightly simplify my page, because I know it can be a lot simpler and I've spent hours trying to fix this small problem. Help me figure out how to remove this white border

On my user page, there is some white border around my image and userbox section. I can't figure out what's causing it! Could someone let me know how to fix it? Thanks. —Mike Allen 08:16, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

I see you've fixed it for your image, but not for the userbox section. The white border is there because it's default for the {{Userbox}} template. You need to use some CSS to alter it, as suggested here: Template:Userboxtop. Judging by your user page, that's probably all the help you need with that question, but do say if not! Table issues

I have recently started using tables to format my userpages, and I'm experiencing a few problems. The first one is that on this page I have 3 boxes that are very unevenly balanced. I would like it for the bottom of the boxes to meet at the same line, if that is possible and for the two right boxes to spread out a bit more in the process. The second problem is the background colour of those tables - as you can see, there is a white colouring outside the boxes - how can you change that colour? Any help with either of those problems would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks, Forentitalk 07:05, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm using the Chrome browser and there's a fair chance that your user page doesn't appear exactly the same for me as it does for you, so take what I say with a pinch of salt!
The easy part first: the background of the table can be changed using the help given here: Help:Table#Color; scope of parameters. I tried it on your page and it worked (not sure if it looks nice though; as far as I know there isn't any way to smooth the edges).
I'm not sure if I understand what you mean when you say you want the two right boxes to spread out more; I assume you'd like them to not be sat on top of each other with their borders turning into one big border (that's how it looks for me, anyway). You can do two things, as far as I know; if you just put two returns between the two div containers, they will separate a certain distance. If that isn't as much as you want or is too little, you can use margins (which, by the way, might come in handy many times over, elsewhere). In your bottom (time) div box parameters, add margin-top:50px; and change the pixels to suit.
I am not sure what you mean by wanting your boxes to meet at the same line on the bottom, but I think what you can do is use valign="top" to get them all starting on the same line and then adjust the heights to ensure they finish at the same points. I'm using that on my user page, by the way, if you want to see an example of how that works and how I got mine evenly spaced.
Hope at least some of that helped! Maedin\talk 12:17, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Firstly, thanks a lot - you obviously put a lot of work into helping me. To respond,

  • Basically, is there any way to make the background transparent, so that if someone has a different skin, it will still be clear. I could just make the background colour the normal background colour throughout Wikipedia, but if someone had a different skin, it wouldn't show up well.
  • The other two problems are basically the same problem - I have made a hidden diagram below - you will have to go into edit view to be able to see it properly.

Basically, I want the bottom two boxes to end at the same place. When this happens, I think the right two boxes will be able to spread out more, so the text can be viewed better. Thanks again and heres the link again. Forentitalk 12:50, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Okay, your containers currently have background:White;—just change this to background:transparent;. I'll be back in a moment, hopefully with the answer to the other, we'll see! Maedin\talk 12:58, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have mentioned that you can do the same for the table, style="background: transparent;" (as shown on the table help page). But I don't know if you would need to alter that as well as the containers, you'd have to test, sorry! Maedin\talk 13:02, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't think I have the full answer you're looking for; I'm not even sure if there is one. I know that you can force alignment at the top, or at the bottom. I think that using position:absolute and/or position:relative you can get it to work but I'm not sure how. In any case, I can see you've added the valign and that it's worked; now you just need to expand the height of the first box until it meets with wherever you want the bottom of the third green box to be (or vice versa). Maedin\talk 13:16, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm afraid I am going to have to turn in for the night - I don't know what time it is where you are. I would like to greatly thank you for the help you have given me so far, and hope that we can find a solution to the last problem. I have tried a variety of things with no luck. Thanks again. Forentitalk 13:28, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
I made a small change to add a height for the first box; if you don't like it or it doesn't work for your browser, just revert it, :) I'm sure there's a better answer than this but I don't know what it is. Maedin\talk 13:37, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Altering a Title on a page

How do I alter the main title of a page?

Cosmikos (talk) 05:10, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Cosmikos. There's a few ways of doing it: however, I must warn that completely modifying the title of your userpage so that it is misleading, or doing any such modification to anything other than your own userspace, will probably be frowned upon. Check out User:Sonia/draft for an example; the title has been changed to read "List of New Zealand composers".
That was created by using
<div id="title-override" class="topicon" style="float: left; position: absolute; width: 100%; display:none"><div style="background: white; font-size: 200%; position:relative; margin-top:-5px; padding-top: 3px; padding-bottom:3px; ">List of New Zealand composers</div></div>
Another way to do it is to use {{DISPLAYTITLE}}; this is more limited in scope, and probably more accepted. It's mainly used to format a title, but can hide parts of it: For example, my userpage has "Sonia" in pink italics. This was created with
{{DISPLAYTITLE:<span style="color:#C09; font-family:Times New Roman"><span style="display:none">User:</span>''Sonia''</span>}}
Hope this helps! sonia 08:40, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the speedy reply, it is much appreciated. I only want to change one letter in the title, from lower to higher case. No major changes to the title at all.

Cosmikos (talk) 09:45, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

  • Ah, right. Cosmikos, if you want to change the first letter of your username on your userpage to lowercase, then {{lowercase title}} will work just as well without the lines of code :) If, as the others have noted, what you want is to move a page so that the title is different and does not just appear so, then yes, Help:How to move a page is the correct place to look; if you want to change your username, then WP:CHU. sonia 03:06, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

I have a problem relating to the same thing. I copied and pasted the code that Sonia uses, but for some reason the font only shows up differently under the Comic Sans MS font. When I try either Astur, Banco, Caslon Antique, Jim Crow, or Neuland font, (which are fonts that I like) it only shows up as the same obscure font (I have no idea what font it is, all I know is that it's always the same font). What am I doing wrong? B.T.W. I left it with the Comic Sans Impact font for now. Lighthead þ 09:18, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Userbox mess

Hi! I just discovered userboxes. I already have many and plan to add a few more to my user page (I'm still in the process of reviewing the gallery to pick my choices).

For reasons unknown to me blank spaces appear out of nowhere as if there were line breaks sending the following userbox to the line below and leaving a tabulation space before it. I have now idea why or how to handle it.

I'd like to have a block of 3-userbox-wide lines at the top of my page. I'd appreciate if someone would explain me how to handle this, as I plan to add more userboxes in the near future and it wouldn't be cool if I have to bother you again with the same problem after I added more. collapsable items that don't fill up the page horizontally

On User:Cloveapple I'm looking for ways to collapse sections of text without having a bar that runs all the way accross the page. I just want the colored bars to stop short of the column of userboxes on the right. I'd rather not set the collapsable stuff as precise pixel width since I don't know what screen width other people have. I copied a NavFrame example and put it on my page to show where I'm trying to get the collapse effect. On User:Cloveapple you can see the lavendar stripe all accross the page saying "my searches" in the spot where I would want to put a few such sections. As you can see it's too broad and covers userboxes. Suggestions? Cloveapple (talk) 19:56, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:NavFrame, you may just need to add a "width" parameter. -- œ 13:58, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I tried multiple methods and finally got a NavFrame method to work the way I wanted (in the Orange search bar on my page).
I've still got a question though. I'm puzzled though why the collapsetop template which I also tried (in the Yellow searches bar) doesn't quite work. I could get the collapsetop to accept a percentage width and it's the right size, but it keeps positioning itself lower than my column of right-aligned user boxes that shouldn't be affecting it. Both the orange bar example and the puzzling yellow bar example are on the user page. Cloveapple (talk) 01:50, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Finally got it to work using a table. :-D Cloveapple (talk) 18:55, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
