Yellowjackets is an upcoming coming-of-age drama television series created and executive produced by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson for Showtime. It stars Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Sammi Hanratty as four teenagers involved in a plane crash, with Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis portraying their adult counterparts as they reveal the truth about their survival 25 years later. The series is scheduled to premiere on November 14, 2021.

Premise

Yellowjackets tells the narrative of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the survivors of a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to warring, cannibalistic clans, while also tracking the lives they have attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later.

Production

On May 9, 2018, it was announced that Showtime had bought the rights to Yellowjackets from Entertainment One, with Drew Comins set to executive produce alongside series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson.[3] In September 2019, it was reported that the network had greenlit the pilot episode, with Karyn Kusama attached to direct from a screenplay by Lyle and Nickerson, and production scheduled to begin in Los Angeles.[2][4]

In October 2019, Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, and Jasmin Savoy Brown were cast as series regulars,[5][6] with Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Ella Purnell, Sammi Hanratty, Sophie Thatcher, Sophie Nélisse, and Amy Okuda joining the cast in November.[7][8] The following month, Ava Allan, Courtney Eaton, Briana Venskus, and Liv Hewson were cast in recurring roles,[9] with Warren Kole, Peter Gadiot, Keeya King, Alex Wyndham, Sarah Desjardins, Kevin Alves, and Alexa Barajas joining the series in June 2021.[10][11]

Production on the pilot began in November 2019, and by August 2020, the project had been moved to the 2020–2021 development season.[12][13] In December 2020, Showtime gave Yellowjackets a series order.[14][15][16] Filming on the rest of the series will take place in Vancouver from May 3 to September 28, 2021.[12]

At a Television Critics Association panel discussion, Lynskey said she joined the series because it was "female-centered" and the characters were "well-drawn," while Lewis noted that it was "absolutely riveting ... I'm always interested in dichotomies or contrasts in all these multilayered problems within a human being." When asked about supernatural elements within the series, Lyle said there had been several discussions exploring how it would center around "that line between a genuine supernatural phenomena or some sort of madness that takes hold." Director Kusama added that the series would explore "the mysteries of human behavior" and the question, "What are humans capable of?"[17]

The series is scheduled to premiere on November 14, 2021, at 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).[18]
