What is the Bacon WikiCup?
[edit]The Bacon WikiCup 2010, a variation of the Wikipedia WikiCup, is an event where Wikipedians gather together and try create and expand as much bacon-related content (pictures, articles, DYKs, etc) for the Bacon Challenge 2010 as possible. The purpose of this event is to promote user involvement in the Bacon Challenge. The more a user contributes, the more points will be scored. On the first day of March 2010, whoever has the most points will win the Bacon WikiCup 2010 Trophy.
- Sign up for the Bacon Challenge 2010 here to have yourself entered into the Bacon Challenge.
How to score
[edit]All participants report any bacon pictures, articles or DYKs that they have created/contributed to. You must report your contributions HERE to score points. The scorekeeper will add points to the table below. At the end of the challenge, the participant with the most points is awarded the "Bacon Bits Of Recognition" Trophy. All participants that score points receive an award for their involvement.
Point scoring
[edit]Point scoring is as follows:
- Creating a new bacon-related article: 5 points
- Creating a redirect or disambiguation page scores 1 point
- Substantial contributions to a bacon article: 2 points (6 points if major contributions bring it up to GA / 8 points if brought up to FA) Substantial contributions are interpreted by the score keeper
- Bacon photograph/illustration upload: 2 points (6 points if FP is achieved before the last day).
- A successful DYK nomination scores 1 point for both the nominator and key contributor(s).
- Copy-edits of at least six corrections in an article earns 1 point. Only one point can be earned per article for copy-editing.
- Example: Fixing three typos counts as three qualifying corrections regardless of whether or not those changes are made all in one edit or in three individual edits.
- If an article or picture gets deleted before March 2 2010, all points that any participant gained from their work in that article or picture upload may be lost but if points are already awarded to you for articles that you have created in your userspace, you do not lose points if somebody else adds them to the mainspace before their intended debut (as long as you made the article to an appropriate standard first).
Bonus points are also periodically given for excellent contributions and effort.
Bonus Point Opportunity: The first user(s) who heavily contribute to an article and promote it to featured status will get 5 additional bonus points.

Participant Interviews
[edit]1. You managed to climb into first place by uploading an impressive twenty-three pictures. Shall we expect more pictures to come from you, or are you thinking about writing an article?
Finding, creating and uploading photographs, especially of food, seems to be a niche I've found for the moment. I've also gravitated more toward elf-like activities than toward creating new articles, as there are so many articles that need content improvements. I might write an article if the right bacon moves me.
2. You hold the lead by more than thirty points. Are you expecting to maintain your lead?
One time I won a frozen turkey. Since then, I've never won anything, so I've had my moment of triumph. I can't imagine holding the lead for long, especially since the contest is just now starting to gain momentum.
3. Which contributed content have you found the most interesting and why?
I'm appalled and fascinated by Drmies' Calfs' Liver with Bacon article. Since he won't cook it, and since I haven't been able to find an existing photo with the proper rights available, I may have to cook it myself so we have a photo to illustrate the article. I've been trying to nerve myself up for the attempt, but catching the calf has proven to be the toughest part so far. I can't imagine why it runs like crazy whenever I try to approach it, although I suppose it might be the axe.
1. There have been plenty of articles written by many participants. Which of these articles have you found the most interesting and why?
So far, Zeeuws spek seems quite interesting and a dish I would like to try - however all the contributions I have seen so far as part of the content drive are unique and intriguing.
2. You had an approved DYK this week. Are you intending to make more DYK nominations?
Yes, I like the idea of whetting the appetite of readers for bacon related DYKs, in advance of the push for more in March 2010.
3. What are your thoughts on having a grand debut of a large quantity of bacon-related articles in March 2010?
I think it is a great idea. At the moment, I am not doing the userspace prep thing in advance of March 2010, but instead I've been submitting articles live to become DYKs. However as the time gets closer to March 2010, I will ponder perhaps doing a few articles with that DYK appearance timeframe in mind.
Week 3: Spinningspark
[edit]1. Have any pictures uploaded from other editors interested you?
Oh yes, User:Glane23 has come up with a brilliant collection of pictures which went some way to getting me interested in this project. Vegan Bacon maple french toast cupcakes is just so wrong in so many different ways you would have to write a whole article to explain it. Has someone written an article by the way? If not, why not?
2. You have some images ready, but will not be uploaded yet due to image policies. Are there currently any other pictures that you have ready, but will be held back at a later date for the same reason?
:By and large I try not to have much to do with "fair use" images, but in the case of company logo's that is really the only way they can be used. There are two articles I have written on companies, Danish Bacon and Bio-blend Fuels, that I will upload logos for when they go live. Actually, Bio-blend gave me permission to use their logo with a free licence but I am fairly confident that they don't know what they are doing when it comes to copyright and don't understand the consequences of that so I will upload it as fair use anyway to protect their interests. Other than that, I have written to a number of organisations asking for images and will upload them as soon as I get any results. Nothing definite promised, but the chance of a Wikipedia entry is usually a good incentive for companies to cooperate.
3. What are your thoughts about Bacon in general; As a food, as a fuel etc.?
I love bacon, but I don't usually it eat it very often. That is, until I started on this project when the constant talking about it seemed to start a strange craving in me and I am currently buying a pack or two every day. I buy it from my local corner shop (convenience store) where the owner probably thinks I have gone barmy. He is Muslim and picks up the packs by the corners with his fingertips as he puts them in the bag as if they were coated in acid (please don't try and make me feel guilty about this - no one is making him sell it!). As a fuel? well never tried it, but I wrote an article!. Or did you mean as fuel for humans? I just checked out that article after linking it and it doesn't mention bacon, someone should get over there and fix it.
