Karpagam is a 1963 Tamil film starring Gemini Ganesan, Savithri, Muthuraman, and K.R. Vijaya. Directed by K. S. Gopalakrishnan.The film depicts the life of a young girl, Karpagam (played by K.R. Vijaya) and shows tragedies, difficulties, and love. The film was released on 15 November 1963. Amar Jothi Movies produced the film. The film was a box office hit. From the profit the producer made from this film, he built and named a studio, Karpagam Sudio .

Cast

Plot

Nallasivam (S.V Ranga Rao) is a humble landlord in a village. He has a two children, Karpagam (K. R. Vijaya) and Rajangam (Muthuraman). Rajangam is studying in the city, he is a disobedient character who be friends Sheela (Sheela). Sheela's father Thandavam (M. R.Radha) plans to take over the properties and assets of Nallasivam through Rajangam marrying his daughter.

Nallasivam is reluctant for Rajangam marrying Sheela, but agrees for it. Karpagam marries a hardworking and straight forward farmer Sundharam (Gemini Ganesan). Both marriages take place simultaneously. Nallasivam gives the entire responsibility to runthe farm to Sundharam, who then earns the ire of Rajangam and Thandavam. Sheela gives birth to a girl, Meenakshi. Child-less Sundharam and Karpagam associate themselves closely with Meenakshi as she doesn't get much attention from Rajangam-Sheela.

After fewyears with Thandavam still eyeing for the property demands Rajangam to send a legal-notice to his father, this breaks the family, Rajangam comes out of thehouse and settles for minimum-monthly compensation.

Due to an accident Karpagam is killed by a raging bull. Nallasivam persuades Sundharam for a re-marriage, but he is reluctant as he is concerned about Meenakshi' future. Reluctant,Sundharam then marries Amutha (Savithri). By seeing all these happenings, thinking he might lose the property Thandavam threatens Sundharam by torching the granary and kidnaps Meenakshi. Later Sundharam is saved by Amutha in an assault by Thandavam. She takes a stab by Thandavam goons. She is heavily injured and finally saved by the love and affection of Meenakshi. Police arrests Thandavamon charges of murder and cheating.
