[edit] History
The name originated with the Biblical Sarah, who appears in the Book of Genesis. Originally known as Sarai, she fled her hometown of Haran with her husband Abram. They arrived in Egypt but were cast out by the Pharoah, at which point God appeared to them and told them that they would be the creators of the Promised Land of Israel. He also told Sarai and Abram that from that day forth, they would be known as Sarah and Abraham.
With the spread of Christianity to Europe, the name entered the vernacular of several European languages. It has remained popular for several centuries, especially in Great Britain and the United States, although its use in America has decreased in the new millennium.
[edit] "Sara" variant
The spelling Sara is pronounced /sɑrɑ/ (SAR-ah) in French, Italian and Dutch, and has traditionally been pronounced that way in English. However, it is now commonly pronounced by English-speakers the same way as Sarah, i.e. /sɛrɑ/ (SAIR-ah).
In 2005, Sara was the 76th most popular name for newborn girls in the United States; Sarah was the 15th most popular. The spelling Sara is estimated to be used once for every five times that the Sarah spelling is used.
