Line 4 on the Shanghai Metro network is a loop line in the city of Shanghai. It follows the Inner Ring Road for most of the route, extending into Pudong across the Huangpu River. It shares the route from Baoshan Road to Hongqiao Road with the current Line 3.
Although this is a ring line, trains returning to the depot use Yishan Road as a terminal to let all passengers disembark.
The first segment of the line between Damuqiao Road and Lancun Road (running in a "C"-shape) opened on December 31, 2005. The remainder of the line opened on December 29, 2007.
To determine the direction of travel, the line that travels counter-clockwise is called the Outer Loop (外环), while the other line is known as the Inner Loop (内环).
[edit] Construction problems
During construction of Line 4, part of the tunnel that was under construction close to the Huangpu River collapsed on July 1, 2003. This caused a six-storey building to collapse, and several other buildings in the neighborhood had to be evacuated. No casualties were reported, but the incident caused the completion of the metro line to be delayed for almost a year. Construction has been completed, and the section from Damuqiao Road to Lancun Road opened for operation December 29, 2007.
