[edit] Profile
Shelton's proximity to Staffordshire University has resulted in it having a large student population. Within the grounds of the University is a film theatre which often shows local and art house films [2] and is located close to Stoke-on-Trent railway station. Stoke-on-Trent College is also located in Shelton. The area mostly consists of terraced houses and is a combination of owner occupiers, students and private landlords. The 2001 Census defined Shelton as 'mulicultural' [3].

[edit] History
Shelton boasts the earliest gas works in the Potteries. The works were opened in Shelton's Lower Bedford Street, under the ownership of the British Gaslight Company, to supply Hanley and Stoke in 1825 [4].
[edit] Regeneration
Shelton resides within the area known as the 'University Quarter' [5] and has subsequently seen continuing regeneration in recent years. The plans for the University Quarter aim to:
... generate a thriving knowledge economy that is globally connected leading to sustainable prosperity and an ambitious and dynamic community. It will create an integrated learning experience, focussed upon creativity, skills and employability, promoting participation and progression.[5]
The historic Hanley Park underwent a £2.8m improvement project which was completed in 2007[6] and often plays host to carnivals, fairs, sporting events and plays host to the final of England's Ultimate Strength Challenge [7].
