Use of {{College}}[edit]

I've made a change to distinguish between the existing parameters "college", "school" and "from." It's now a hierarchy.

  1. college: uses the {{College}} template
  2. school: caller can pass links
  3. from: caller can pass links

I now realize that school and from are as redundant as college and school were before, but I think from could in the future be a useful "hometown" designation. Rolando 16:16, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The whole point in creating the college lookup template was to avoid dealing with humongously piped links when users update the team rosters, and to actually keep these links consistent. Also, if we want all the links to point directly to a sub-article about each school's sports program we can do that directly from the college template, and the template can be adjusted to work for football or any other sport also. This is why it is important for the template to do its own linking. Please do not "pass links" to the template because as far as I know there is no parser function for un-linking parameter text. --fullcourt 04:52, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
I understand what you're getting at on the links but can you point to an example where this approach been used elsewhere, esp. on a template with literally hundreds of options? I think it's a maintenance nightmare.
See [this page] for a ParserFunction that will get parts out of a link.
Some documentation of how this template (and the College template) works would be great. What is the difference between height_ft vs. ft, height_in vs in, college vs. school?
In any case, different college sports teams have different pages; not just sports programs (see, e.g., Purdue Boilermakers vs. Purdue Boilermakers basketball). That is going to limit the usefulness of the college template for other sports, at least as it is designed now. Rolando 12:15, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, on a larger scale actually. See Category:Country data templates and the related flag-icon shortcuts. The only fundamental difference is that this is self-contained rather than spread out over numerous small pages. The average article is a bigger maintenance nightmare than this.
The titleparts function is pretty much designed for getting the same functionality as SUBPAGENAME but it can be used on a different page than the page title being supplied to it, and the level of depth can also be specified. I'm not sure how useful it would be on this project but it would be a major boon for a project that had subpages titled like {{#titleparts:Bible/KJV/Romans/12/19|N}} (where N is the number of the slash at which the title should be truncated) or something like that. But just like all other parser functions, it can't properly handle a title with brackets around it. I've tested this function but have not yet found a use for it.
I already wrote a collective documentation for all of the templates I've created here.
If I had a complete list of each team's mascot and the present names of all the sub-articles and the future names for those which haven't been created yet, everything would be easier. This would be a good place to use redirects for the ones that don't exist yet, following this sort of pattern.
1. Purdue University ← 2. Purdue Boilermakers ← 3. Purdue Boilermakers basketball ← 4. Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball
← 4. Purdue Boilermakers women's basketball
← 3. Purdue Boilermakers golf ← 4. Purdue Boilermakers men's golf
← 4. Purdue Boilermakers women's golf
← 3. Purdue Boilermakers football
← 3. etc. etc.
Then when the pages are created the links will already be in place, and there will be no actual maintenance between now and then except for a few schools here and there, which aren't necessarily new, but are only producing successful alumni for the first time in a long while or possibly ever. ::--fullcourt 14:32, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
Wow, the country templates are nutty. Thanks for including the documentation in this template above. It seems like you can probably remove the superfluous parameters (e.g., height_ft, height_in, college), right? It'll make the syntax quite a bit simpler, I think. Use in independent minor leagues[edit]

This template is now used by the "PBL roster header" template--I saw it used in the article on the Halifax Rainmen and have mimicked it on the Manchester Millrats article.

There is a problem: At this level, most players don't have a biographical article. (Only one of the Millrats has time in the NBA.) The template is coughing up links to articles that are random. How to code it to inhibit a link for the player? --Spike-from-NH (talk) 02:25, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How about {{AutoLink}}? If you'd like, I can set it up so that with |autolink=y, Nonexistent Player becomes Nonexistent Player but Blue link remains the same. —LOL T/C 23:23, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; that would be an improvement but not a complete solution. Currently on the Manchester Millrats table, 6 players are blue-linked and only one link is correct. The other five link incorrectly. Our point guard is Al Stewart and the other five recycle names from people who are notable but deceased. The sophistication of auto-linking is unnecessary as the existence of a Wikipedia link is unlikely to change dynamically during the player's tenure in this sports backwater. May we have a switch to turn linking off completely on a case-by-case basis? --Spike-from-NH (talk) 12:54, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I used | dab = basketball as a solution for the incorrect links. I'm just afraid of simply removing links because if a user does create an article for one of the red links, he may not be aware of the template and we may not be aware of the existence of the article. What do you think? —LOL T/C 03:55, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That makes them all red links, but that's better than bad links; thanks. (Now I understand your editing comments; in fact, one got me to read WP:Dash and restore some of your en-dashes that I had started converting back to minus signs.) --Spike-from-NH (talk) 15:24, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

←No problem. Do you still want the autolinking? —LOL T/C 18:11, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, if it doesn't take tons of your time; red-links don't look good. (Would |autolink=y be a property of Player2 or of the enclosing template, "PBL roster header"?) --Spike-from-NH (talk) 00:06, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've now employed autolinking. I wish it could be a parameter of {{PBL roster header}}, but I don't think it's possible. —LOL T/C 07:45, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! it looks good. --Spike-from-NH (talk) 12:17, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Further to the subject of WP:Dash, this Wikipedia style rule (or at least the slavish adherence to it) stinks! My keyboard does not have an en-dash key, it has -, right up there next to zero. And a couple fonts I use (for certain headings and in the edit window) don't have anything where en-dash goes. In the game results table you edited, I'm now copying your style with en-dashes, but I am not about to wander up to the palette every time I type a compound adjective (though I would be willing to invoke a tool at the end of an edit). --Spike-from-NH (talk) 02:23, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The style rule stench had been discussed for quite some time, but I've gotten used to it. On my desktop I can type alt+0150 or alt+0151 in a fraction of a second, and on my laptop I copy the dash character because ctrl+v is faster than having to scroll down. —LOL T/C 07:45, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed I didn't think WP:Dash was your personal creation, and resolved to post the same complaint on the style-guide talk page. But it's crammed with comments with actual Wikipedia policy-makers, has tons of archived comments, and they seem to have moved on from the subject of hyphens. Thanks. --Spike-from-NH (talk) 12:17, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fix needed![edit]

Does anyone know how to fix the template so that a club's alternate name is displayed, with the club wikilink behind it?

For example: Saski Baskonia is currently known by its sponsorship name of Caja Laboral (a credit union). I'd like to see a link that looks exactly like this:

  • Caja Laboral (in non-wiki form: [[Saski Baskonia|Caja Laboral]])

However, using the "clublink" parameter produces either

  • Caja Laboral* or
  • Saski Baskonia*

without a wikilink, depending on which article is put in the "clublink" position. Could someone fix this?? — Dale Arnett (talk) 21:22, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the Template the link to the Wichita State University is missing! 141.30.217.30 (talk) 08:21, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality variable is breaking column sorting[edit]

In a number of older NBA team roster pages that used the nat variable for nationality, the current player2 template logic is breaking the roster sorting, by putting the wrong information in each column. I noticed that there's supposed to be some conditional handling to add in this nationality column whenever nat is used, but it's not working for whatever reason. Here's an example roster that's broken: 2000–01_Los_Angeles_Lakers_season#Rostermmortal03 (talk) 18:03, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The consensus at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_24#Flags_in_rosters was to not list nationality for NBA rosters. In the case of {{Player2}} it means that |nat= should not be specified.—Bagumba (talk) 08:49, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 2 July 2019[edit]

I would like to add an optional "experience" ("Exp") column, i.e., how many seasons that player has played in the league prior to the current one. NBA roster lists typically include this. I've mocked up a version of this in my sandbox at User:Cthomas3/sandbox/player2, slotting it just to the left of the College/School/From column. The field will only appear if the parameter is included, and will hyperlink R if the player is designated a rookie. If this change is implemented, I can update the documentation and add the appropriate fix to {{NBA roster header}}. CThomas3 (talk) 06:34, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Cthomas3: You will need to establish consensus for this change. I have put a notification at WT:NBA.—Bagumba (talk) 08:43, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. This I just an extra field and doesn’t add that much in my opinion. With split years between the G League and other years how do you count seasons anyway? Rikster2 (talk) 00:44, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Rikster2, From what I understand, if you play in a particular season, you get credit for that particular season. I personally think it is good information to quickly see who the veterans are vs. the rookies. Honestly I'd prefer that vs. showing birthdates. CThomas3 (talk) 01:31, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
it’s still extraneous info in my opinion. Rikster2 (talk) 01:51, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
note that the WNBA template, which uses {{playerW}}, has this feature. Frietjes (talk) 13:09, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation parameter needed for "From"[edit]

Place names can be ambiguous too, of course. bd2412 T 01:57, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Replace switch case for 'pos' param to use Template:Bs position[edit]

Please simplify this template to use Template:Bs position for pos parameter.  McVahl  Talk  05:45, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request to complete TfD nomination[edit]

Template:Player2 has been listed at Templates for discussion (nomination), but it was protected, so it could not be tagged. Please add:

{{subst:tfm|help=off|1=MPBL player}}

to the top of the page to complete the nomination. Thank you. fuzzy510 (talk) 03:42, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 18 May 2022[edit]

Please noinclude the merge message, to prevent the many "fostered content" lint errors caused by it. --rchard2scout (talk) 11:17, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see why it would cause lint errors but the current use of this template, with mutiple uses in a row is not ideal (See: Boston_Celtics#Players) but it is also important to advertise the discussion when it is used so that contributers who use the template are aware and can add to the dicussion. It might be best to noinclude here and instead add a transcluded note at {{NBA roster header}} about the merger of this template. I am not sure about the best way forward here yet. Terasail[✉️] 16:47, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done Although notification is normally thought to be helpful, and temporary Linter errors that do not harm the display of articles are not a real problem, I am going to IAR here and assume that zero changes to this template will be needed when the 80 pages transcluding {{MPBL player}} are converted to use this template. On that basis, I have noincluded the TFM notice for this template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:12, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Relevant discussion at Template talk:College[edit]

I've started a discussion at Template talk:College about how to handle listings for high schools that are entered into this template. The discussion can be found here. Please chime in if you have any thoughts! -fuzzy510 (talk) 01:10, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is the Number table sorting template necessary for player numbers?[edit]

Is the {{Number table sorting}} template necessary for the |num= parameter? I'd assume all values input would only ever be numerical, though I could be wrong. I guess I want to see List of current NBA team rosters not exceed the node count. -BRAINULATOR9 (TALK) 01:47, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
