Invitation to WikiProject Portals

The Portals WikiProject has been rebooted.

You are invited to join, and participate in the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system and all the portals in it.

There are sections on the WikiProject page dedicated to tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too), and areas on the talk page for discussing the improvement and automation of the various features of portals.

Many complaints have been lodged in the RfC to delete all portals, pointing out their various problems. They say that many portals are not maintained, or have fallen out of date, are useless, etc. Many of the !votes indicate that the editors who posted them simply don't believe in the potential of portals anymore.

It's time to change all that. Let's give them reasons to believe in portals, by revitalizing them.

The best response to a deletion nomination is to fix the page that was nominated. The further underway the effort is to improve portals by the time the RfC has run its course, the more of the reasons against portals will no longer apply. RfCs typically run 30 days. There are 19 days left in this one. Let's see how many portals we can update and improve before the RfC is closed, and beyond.

A healthy WikiProject dedicated to supporting and maintaining portals may be the strongest argument of all not to delete.

We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.

Let's do this.

Event coordinator

Hi, the English Wikipedia recently created a new user permission for editors involved in off-wiki outreach work, event coordinator. This new permission allows users to mark accounts for confirmed for up to 10 days, and also allows them to create accounts for events without rate limits without some of the features of the account creator right that aren't used at edit-a-thons and other events. I have added the event coordinator permission to your account and removed the account creator permission, as you appear to have been using it mainly for outreach work.

This should have no noticeable impact on your ability to create accounts, and will give you the extra ability to temporarily confirm accounts if you need to. The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.

By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.

Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.

Advocacy and edit warring

I have asked you to be self aware and to restrain your enthusiasm. This was absolutely ahead of the curve, and does not reflect what people in the RfC have said at all.

Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add soapboxing, promotional or advertising material to Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing.

Your recent editing history at Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. @Jytdog: I'm sorry, I thought we were coming to agreement and could start working on the details of the table. I meant no offense. I'll wait until the RfC is formally closed before editing the article again.

As a technical note, this was the only time I have reverted your removal of the table; one revert hardly constitutes an edit war. Also, with the RfC currently at 11 keeps and 3 removes, it's pretty clear that there's a consensus to keep the table in some form, though likely without the full rationales. Your last remark said you were going to keep the pictures and most comments are against that. I opened the discussion to see if we could agree on an early read of the emerging consensus, and it pretty clear to me that there is consensus for a modest list - nothing like the big elaborate table that was there. Your last comment before you made the edit had no cognizance of that. If we cannot reach agreement in the discussion then yes we should let the RFC continue and close. 2017 World Science Photography Awards?

Hi Antony: I have not seen any notifications or announcements regarding the final 2017 World Science Photography Competition. Has there been an announcement? Thanks.

On another note, I am gearing up to post a bunch of high quality photographs, several of which will be nominated for Featured Pic. One of them will be what I feel is the best photograph I have ever seen of the Taj Mahal, of which I have a whole series of photographs taken in 1982.

Quantum Devices

Hi Anthony-22. I need your expertise! I wrote a starter article for Manijeh Razeghi a scientist who won the Franklin Award. I noticed you worked on a couple nanoscience articles. I am wondering if you could look at and possibly explain Razeghi's work on quantum devices. In the award material, they mention that her work opened new areas of research. So I am wondering if her quantum device work is different than the other areas already covered on Wikipedia or if it is simply a different name for the same research?
