Turner Classic Movies

Recently you seem to have been adding Turner Classic Movies as a source for information at several movie articles. Clicking on the link you give only gets a site unavailable notice, so I've been deleting that addition in your edits for the last three days. I've just noticed your edit at "Stan Laurel" that replaced a {{TCMDb name}} template with a direct link to TCM. The problem is that the TCM website isn't available in all regions, so when I (in the UK) click on your link I get the error message: "Not Available - Oh no! Turner Classic Movies isn't available in your region." The previous templated version gave me an archived page at web.archive.org. I see you've made a lot of these edits. What problem are you trying to fix?

Please don't apologise! I don't know whether you've done something wrong or not, but I do know that the templated versions of the links work for me, while the direct links don't. I don’t know what you mean by templates and direct links so I don’t know what you’re saying. I’m not good with computer technical concepts. Trying to explain is probably useless because I’m not likely to understand. I don’t have a PC so I use my iPad without a mouse, which I think is more challenging, but I like the challenge. Let me try to explain. If you go to this old version of the page "Stan Laurel" you should see a link in the "External Links" section near the bottom, that reads "Stan Laurel at the TCM Movie Database". The code for that link is {{tcmdb name|id=109430|name=Stan Laurel}}. The part inside the curly brackets is called a template, and every template has its own page that explains how it works. The template page for {{tcmdb name}} is here.

When I click that "Stan Laurel" link, I'm taken to a page at the Internet Archive "Wayback Machine" that offers a list of archived versions of the "Stan Laurel" page at TCM.com. The advantage of that approach is that it should be available anywhere in the world.

The code you replaced it with looks like this: [https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/person/109430|141756/Stan-Laurel#overview Stan Laurel] at [[Turner Classic Movies]] which gives a direct link to TCM.com. That's fine if you live in the regions that TCM covers, but access to the TCM website seems to be blocked outside the USA.

I'm fairly new here myself, but I think the template version was modified to redirect to the "Wayback Machine" when TCM began blocking access for overseas users. If the previous version of the link works for you, I think it would be better to revert those edits that changed the template to a direct link, because the direct links won't work outside the USA. If the old version doesn't work for you, we should probably try to contact whoever maintains the template to find out if there's a problem.
