Naming conventions[edit]

Hi, Dearagon! The naming conventions I am referring to to are here. The usual standard is not to use their maiden names, but if she is known by her maiden name (like Barbara Streisand is), the article should be moved back. I was moving all articles from Category:English countesses to match the naming conventions and also to match large number of other articles. Yes, it was against the usage of the twelfth century in England, for at least half of the women I have studied (and that's 55 widowed countesses). She was her father's heir, hence the identification with the lands that were associated with his name. Some women did take their husbands' surnames, if they had surnames to take. This was a time when naming practices were still fluid for both males and females. DeAragon 06:32, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm contacting you because you seem to have made a significant contribution to this article. I'm a little confused as to what name to use for the article. Currently the article name is Nicola de la Haye, while (your) text uses Nicholaa de la Haye, as does the BBC [1]. Meanwhile, the Dictionary of National Biography has (under Gerard de Camville) the form Nicholaa de Haia. Would you recommend changing the name of the article to Nicholaa de la Haye? Nicholaa seems to accord with the original sources. I have consulted the charters of Nicholaa and the double A appears in at least one original charter in the British Library. "Nicolaa" is the way her name was spelled by the scribe, so the ch vs c issue is probably a matter of choice.

That was left over from what another editor had written. I didn't remove it because I thought it linked to a page on another web site that contained genuine information on William d'Aubigny. As it does not, I'll change that. Thanks for the heads up.

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing.
