Hi Dwaipayan[edit]

Arre boss thik achhe... I understand. I wanted to contribute more but my day job (which pays all the bills) takes up so much time. I am going to get the Byomkesh and Tenida pages thoroughly revised over time but I need to read each and every novel again. Right now I am working on Pother kanta but I'll do all the novels sooner or later. I'll look into the West Bengal site too. Always glad to be of help. Anirban --Antorjal 17:59, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the late response. I just got done with Pother kanta. Mind taking a look and making changes/suggestions/improvements when you get the time? :)

I've looked for the map for quite a bit... it's really shocking that I can't find a map of the district post division but I'll let you know if I find anything online. TC --Antorjal 21:06, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the end-spoiler template and the relinking. I'll use the spoiler and end-spoiler from now on with the other 30 odd stories. So I'm done with one, now I have 30 more to do (and that too only for Byomkesh). I want to get the Tenida one done properly too. Thanks again. :D--Antorjal 21:27, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Midnapore Map for West Bengal[edit]

The process that you noted sounds like a process that will work. I was thinking on similar lines but I was thinking that I'd find a map with the subdivisions in both districts (which might be fewer in number than constituencies). I think the district was broken up without fragmenting any subdivisions, but I haven't searched for that yet. I think your method is equally effective and you've already done the ground work! Great job on that! Can you do a read-up of Tarun Majumdar when you get the time to edit anything I might have missed?--Antorjal 16:46, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Midnapore Map[edit]

Regarding your method, there is no reason why it shouldnt work. Its just that the constituencies are way too many in number, so it could be a little time intensive for me to try it. If you dont want to wait around till a map becomes available on the net, just follow your method on the map using mspaint and mail me the jpeg, i will make the required changes to the svg map -- PlaneMad|YakYak 13:15, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dwaipayanc, since the Indian map experts do not seem to be very active these days, why dont you try asking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps. If there is not too much work, maybe those guys could help... -- Lost(talk) 17:08, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: WB FAC[edit]

  • I should take back my comment about Gombhira and Bhawaiya, as Rangpur and Dinajpur definitely overlaps with nearby WB districts, and these two are a common feature.
  • Bhatiyali refers to the Bhati region, which is the low-lying lands of Mymensingh, kishoreganj, Netrakona in Central Bangladesh. Bhatiyali is definitely a local phenomenon.
  • From Maimansingha Gitika: Maimansingha gitika or Môemonshingha gitika is a collection of folk ballads from the region of Mymensingh and around of Bangladesh. My objection is to the sentence West Bengal has a long tradition in folk literature, evidenced by Maimansingha Gitika, Thakurmar Jhuli or stories related to Gopal Bhar. . This is contradictory, as Mymensingh Gitika is not really indignous to West Bengal, and I believe there are similar regional folk traditions in West Bengal. Adding Mymensingh Gitika here gives a weak impression ... I'm not doubting that the Gitika is known in WB, but to say it is a part of the long tradition of folk culture would be factually incorrect. I suggest replacing it with similar folk anthologies from WB.

The article should be an FA ... but that means a lot of weak points should be addressed soon. Yeah, Siraj was a bad omission, considering his capital and everything was near Murshidabad. The 19th century is also missing.... how about listing Bengal Renaissance or the Brahmo Samaj? --Ragib 18:40, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Plan[edit]

Hi. Your plan is good. I never knew such a template existed. I had a glance at all the articles and tried to separate out the ones most in need. Here are the results on my work:

  • Total - 24 articles
  • Already FA - 3 articles - Economy, Flag, Geography - brings us to 21
  • Holidays is redirected to a list of festivals - can be kept aside for now (20)
  • IMO Cinema, Culture, Citizenship and History are good articles but need some person to take specific interest in them to bring them to FA status. Culture has been through INCOTW, Cinema is supported by a project. That leaves us with 16
  • Out of those the following are the ones which may generate enough interest and may benefit the most - Climate, Geology, Languages, Law and Military. We can bring them to INCOTW first (1)
  • Foreign Relations, Politics, Religion, Sports, Transport, Cuisine, Government are better and may also generate interest (2)
  • The rest - Demographics, Education, Literacy (3)

So how about always nominating 2 articles at INCOTW from these articles? We can start with (1), then move on to (2) and (3). Whatever happens will be better for these articles and Indian articles in general. What do you say? - Aksi_great (talk) 16:21, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. We must start nominating the articles when atleast half the people are active. I will start pinging all people. Hopefully there should be some activity by the time you come back. - Aksi_great (talk) 16:34, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Map[edit]

My edits count has dwindled over the past week, and from tomorrow, I will be completely offline and will be so till late October. (u can expect some stray edits though). As for the map, since you have been a long time contributor, you can get hold of inkscape, and go through the tutorials. It's easy to draw maps, it just requires some trial and error. I too was frustrated at one point of time waiting for people to draw maps, so I taught myself in photoshop, and then when svg was introduced, I switched to learning inkscape. To make a map, get hold of a high-res one, and start tracing. Deeptrivia can also help out. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:12, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re Chinese of Calcutta[edit]

Hi... I'm glad you liked the article. It is a bit of a story how I decided to write that one up. A couple of friends and I went for Indian Chinese for lunch a few days ago (you know the regular chilli, manchurian, etc stuff). My friend is from Mumbai and he kept going on and on like it is only found there... so when I came back to the lab, I checked wikipedia and found it had information only on food in Mumbai. I revised that article and then looked at the Chinatown, Kolkata and Tangra, Calcutta articles. I noticed the amazing picture that you found and I visited that website, which is like a treasure-chest. So that's when I decided I would write one on the Chinese of Calcutta. There is an article on Chinese in Banglapedia but I think this one is more up-to-date and NPOV. I've put a fact up for DYK. But on my to-do list for now is Flora and Fauna of West Bengal, which will take maybe 2 days. Take care. --Antorjal 14:56, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I am doing fine. I got carried away with a couple of articles and offline duties and hadn't done the flora fauna thingie. Once I get back from work tomorrow I should have a huge chunk of time to be able to write up the article and the summary paras on the West Bengal page. I'll probably do them simultaneously so that I can nom the Flora Fauna for DYK. But that would be one I would probably work on for months to try to get to FAC. After that I've got many ideas related to Bengal lined up that should keep me out of trouble. Glad to know you saw the man. That is awesome! I'm really excited now. I'll try to help as much as possible with the news section and the DYK. As far as pictures, some of the Calcutta pictures you found can be used as well, since there is no copyright on them. I will provide whatever I have myself. This week I am going to start emailing everyone I know to start visiting the portal and more importantly to contribute new articles and improve the ones we already have. Take care.--Antorjal 13:03, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Nice work kicking off the West Bengal portal. We have so many sub-portals to Portal:India now. Since the {{Indian selected}} is going now, maybe you can ask Ganesh to insert a new parameter for the west bengal portal in {{WP India}} instead of {{West Bengal selected}}. There's one for the Kerala portal already; so it shouldnt be hard to implement.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 14:47, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I can add the parameter. Now that we have many portals coming up, let me work on a bit to make the parameter generalized (one parameter work for all). Please give me some time. - Ganeshk (talk) 15:59, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image of districts of WB[edit]

Hi... I've created an updated image of the districts of West Bengal in svg using Inkscape. Unfortunately, the file works fine with software but doesn't format correctly on the page itself - [2]. So I've created an exported png bitmap file too and I'm using that one - [3] until the experts can fix the svg file (which would be awesome). Take care. --Antorjal 14:29, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I don't know who to contact for the locator map so if you could let me know or go ahead and contact the person{s} involved that would be great. I can take responsibility for the scanning and reworking the history section (if necessary) as I have read a couple of great books on Modern history of Bengal (1740-1942) lately. I can also add some details on the tribals on West Bengal to the culture section, since I am greatly interested in Santhal rituals etc. Also I'll work up decent articles on Budhhadev Dasgupta and Goutam Ghosh. However, give me the next 3-4 days to work on Ritwik Ghatak, as I've been meaning to do that first per my comments on the talk page. I'll also try to add information to the News on Portal:West Bengal time permitting. Take care. --Antorjal 19:28, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please have a look at the Wiquiquote West Bengal page linked through Portal:West Bengal . Maybe, I will be able to add one or two quotes more. However, others can also put in quotes about West Bengal. I am not able to think out anything about the Wikisource link. Portal: India is linked to Indian speeches. Possibility of West Bengal speeches in Wikisource is very low. Moreover, most writing would be copyright-barred for Wikisource. -- P.K.Niyogi 12:46, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
