Hi there, just to explain why I've been removing some of the categories you've added: I have made Category:Indian yoga teachers a sub-category of Category:Yoga teachers so anyone in the former is already in the latter, by dint of being grouped in the subcat. I goofed? The cats are indeed different, but actually they add up to the same thing (a yogi is one who practises (or maybe teaches) yoga...). But if you want to let it pass, that's fine with me. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:14, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
That's a different matter. Leaving aside the validity of the category and sub-category, the edit diffusing from one to the other was correct.
"Yogi" and "yoga teacher" are not synonymous. In the west the former is often only used for teachers of repute but really means any practitioner (e.g. you could add Yehudi Menuhin as a yogi). That said, the latter term does imply the former, if not vice versa. Mutt Lunker (talk) 14:27, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Yoga project tags

Hi Ewj, thanks for your work on the yoga project. The Yoga project tag you placed at Transcendental Meditation was removed but after discussion the removing editor has said the tag is OK. The art of googling

You said

There are so many things wrong with this I seriously don't know where to begin. I do not have the capacity to give you a workshop in doing online research, and anyway I do not know if you are even interested in getting this right. Briefly,

  1. it turns out there are, for better or worse, 245 google results for "yoga yajnavalkya", not "22,400". Your figure is off by a factor of 100. [2]
  2. Of course, since the title has been used on Wikipedia, most of these instances will be due to Wikipedia. They tell you nothing
  3. there are about 70 instances of "yoga yajnavalkya samhita". These, at least, are mostly independent of Wikipedia[3]
  4. WP:UCN tells you to weigh usage, not to naively use google (note, "naively" using google is what I just did, finding 245 vs. 70 hits. You did not "naively use" google, you simply failed at using it)
  5. to weigh usage, go to google books. You will find 18 instances of "yoga yajnavalkya samhita" and 42 for just "yoga yajnavalkya". Fortunately, these numbers are small enough to go through them and filter out the scholarly sources from cheap popular Yoga-cruft.

I invite you to do this on your own next time you feel called to judge on WP:UCN. I think you will find that Yoga-Yajnavalkya-Samhita is the full name of this text, but the Samhita is sometimes missing because it is sometimes also known as Yoga-Yajnavalkya-Gita, and then the Samhita is sometimes dropped for brevity when it is understood. I am not saying it is wrong to refer to the work as yogayājñavalkya, just that it would make sense for people who do not know enough Sanskrit to know that the samhita is understood to point this out. --dab (𒁳) 07:09, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! The members page was blanked, where many of them are inactive. This mass message is to all the members of WikiProject India, about this and interested editors interested will sign up. After this message gets delivered, we'll wait for 7 days before we start a discussion under a thread on the collaboration's talk page, among the members. The discussion will include what to clean-up of sub-pages, a new set of guidelines for smooth and uninterrupted functioning of the collaboration etc. Please keep all the discussions under this thread only, so that it will easier for future reference. Supporting Indian Wikipedia Program resource distribution

In 2017 - 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India chapter (WMIN) and user groups will pilot a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program (Code name: Project Tiger) will:

(a) Support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and
(b) Sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

The objective of the program is to provide laptops and internet stipends for existing editors who need support to contribute more actively. 50 basic model Acer Chromebooks and Internet stipends for 100 contributors are available for distribution. Provided resources are the sole property of the beneficiaries and should be used for the betterment of the movement.

If you're an active Wikimedian, and interested to receive support from this project, please apply. It will take around 10 minutes of your time, and will ask descriptive questions about your contribution to Indic Wikimedia projects.

Project Tiger Writing Contest

In 2017 – 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India Chapter (WMIN) and user groups from India, are piloting a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program will (a) support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and (b) sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

Phase (a) has been completed, during which active contributors were awarded laptops and internet stipends. Phase (b) will be a contest in which editors will come together and develop a writing contest focused on content gaps. Each month three individual prizes will be awarded to each community based on their contribution for the month. The prizes worth 3,000 INR, 2000 INR, and 1,000 INR, will be awarded to the top contributors for each month. The contest started at March 1, 2018, 0:00, and will end at May 31, 2018, 23:59 (IST).
