Exam 3 complete

I have completed exam 3. PantherLeapord (talk) 00:25, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Awesome, and thank you! You're good to go on to the next lesson! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 19:46, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Whew...

This vandalism one has been tricky for me (have never done any of it). I have read the class and copied 3 links to "possible" (and I do use that term VERY loosely as this stage of the game) vandalism. I think you got your work cut out for you explaining this stuff to me. I am laughing right now and hope you can hear that I am most def having an interesting time with this one. Ok I await your feedback. I am going to read and re read the lesson and do some research of my own on how I might be able to spot vandalism a bit better. Thanks Jackson TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 05:44, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Was I suppose to place the links to the ones that you wanted to review and discuss on the lesson page? I didnt realize that it was the same page that the other adoptees were using too. I followed your instructions EXACTLY and placed them "in the brackets below" but maybe I was suppose to put them elsewhere? TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 06:01, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Ummmm..... this is an excellent example of where a user (me) makes a mistake, and I just have to admit it. I didn't reformat the lesson when I switched from a tradition lesson format to the new educational format. Your exam is located at User:Jackson_Peebles/Adoption/Tattoodwaitress_Exam_3. You were supposed to ALSO do the diffs on the lesson page, but I should have put them in another place. So, I'm completely at fault, here, and you did extra work but still have to do an exam. Vandalism is probably the toughest lesson, so it's okay if you're finding it a bit tough. Adoption is supposed to be intensive. I recommend looking into WP:CVUA if you're interested. As for your diffs that you did post (still visible at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AJackson_Peebles%2FAdoption%2FLesson_3&diff=563276607&oldid=563206141), they were, unfortunately, all wrong. I think taking a look at the exam page will be helpful and easier than the lesson page. This is an extremely important lesson, so please don't hesitate to ask me any questions, and please don't get frustrated; everyone struggles with this, but it'll click. Some people do only vandalism-reversion, so it makes sense that it's tricky. The next lesson is much easier, so just hang in there! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 19:56, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Ok awesome I saw that you changed the lesson so thats all good now. Great! I didn't do the ones on the exam yet because I thought I was suppose to wait to discuss those three (or 4) links that I added to the lesson page before moving on to the exam? I shall go try again. Thats the name of the game... practice makes perfect (sometimes) TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 20:09, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Your course

Hey Jackson, the technical klutz that I am, I just enrolled in your course as a student rather than as an online volunteer. Do you know how I can unenroll as a student? Thanks. By the way, at some point this week, I can make a half-hour or so to discuss in either IRC or Google Talk. Email me. Go Phightins! 21:38, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Oh, yes, you're a complete technical klutz (sarcasm). I unenrolled you. E-mail is forthcoming. --Jackson Peebles (talk) 22:22, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Good afternoon

Alrightie, I have completed exam three, except for the vandal links portion. I left the links to the 3 diffs discussed in the lesson at the top of the exam in the introduction area. I didn't change any vandalism that I found and put the links in the exam because I thought it best that I understand what I am doing first. I thank you kindly for your patience with me. Good afternoon! You did an absolutely fantastic job on the exam. I think you're ready to try the reverts. I strongly recommend using WP:IRC on the en-wikipedia channel for step-by-step guidance, if you'd be more comfortable with that. Experiential learning is ideal, and if you explain the process that you're in and what you need, there are many experienced editors who would be able to help you in real time on there. --Jackson Peebles (talk) 22:38, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Questions re: exam four

I have a few questions about this lesson. I am really clueless =( and I actually thought I knew a little something. Grrrr. This lesson is about how to use the Twinkle options correct? 1. Anyway first issue is the talkback I tried to use the twinkle to leave a talkback on that exam page but it went to your user talk page (Not there anymore because I deleted it) so i went and looked up the talkback templates to do that which totally defeats the purpose of the twinkle. 2. I dont see a "tag" section in the twinkle? I went to the link provided in the lesson for maintenance tags and am still confused. Is tag the same as template? I know how to add a template that says something to the effect "this page lacks sufficient sources please help by adding reliable... blah blah blah" Would that be a maintenance tag? But still how do i get to it using twinkle? Quote of the day "The only stupid question is the one you never ask." ~My Dad TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 22:49, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Good evening, and thanks for the questions - that shows me that you're really dedicate to learning this, which I appreciate. Yes, this lesson is regarding Twinkle options. In almost all instances, you will be leaving talkback messages on user talk pages, but I was able to get Twinkle to do it to a user page itself, so I'm surprised that you're having this issue. However, if you continue to have issues, please just leave me a talkback message on my user talk page; I promise that I'll get the point! As for the maintenance tags - yes, they are also templates. However, not all templates are tags, hence the name difference. On an article space page, Twinkle will show an option to tag. This option will not appear on Userspace pages, but you can obtain the name of one of the tags and post it on the exam, which doesn't defeat the purpose, or you can tag an article space page and link to the diff, which is even better for the encyclopedia! Your example, would, indeed, be a maintenance tag. None of those were dumb questions - Twinkle's options change depending on what space you're in - for example, the option to report a user disappears when you go to an article page! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 00:05, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

i would like to know why you have taken my recent statment off , because its TRUE! many thanks david oaks.

Probably none of my business, but as a new (well not THAT new) editor learning the ropes I am curious as to how this comment was able to be left without a signature and then the "bot" did not tag it with an auto timestamp thingy like it has done to me in the past when I forgot to sign with the 4 ~'s. Just curious. TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 05:36, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
You're fine, TattØØdẄaitre§. This is a prime time for some practical experience; in this case, for the comment, I do not feed the troll (this fellow, as I recall, was a vandal) in accordance with WP:DENY. I simply do not acknowledge the editor in any way unless he/she continues to harass me, in which case, odds are high that one of my fellow editors or an administrator will see to it that he/she is properly dealt with (especially if I ask them to). Regarding SineBot's failure, here, I have no idea how he was able to avoid it. SineBot has an "opt-out" feature, so that could be the case, but I doubt it. When you do need to know the IP or username, though, you can always check the page history. Sometimes SineBot just doesn't work. As a final note, only use one colon unless someone has already commented! I'll work on your test, soon! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 06:53, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Oh ok I understand now. And I will remember about the using only one colon unless someone has already commented. Have a great day Jackson. TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 14:19, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Good morning teacher

I thought I should let you know that I learned something new (thanks to you). I used the chat channel to ask a question for the first time, and learned that by clicking the actual ip address for a user in the recent changes that i can see all their edits. That was so confusing me trying to figure out how to follow a particular vandal. Got it now though. TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 16:24, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Avinendra, I am happy to help; please take your time. I know, it's very hard to beat ClueBot NG. Try using Special:NewPagesFeed and Special:RecentChanges. If you still can't get any, ask User:West.andrew.g if you can use STiki. --Jackson Peebles (talk) 17:12, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Jackson Sorry for late replying, I was busy in some RL assignments. Most of Anti-vandal tools require roll back rights or no of edits. Do I actually need to read all the articles to find vandalism at NewPagesFeed and Recent Changes or there is any other easier way to detect vandalism ? Honestly I dint find any unattended or reported edits which indicate purposeful deletion of modification.Avinendra (talk) 18:37, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
No, my apologies on not noticing this until now. I saw that you sought out advice from my other adoptees and that she responded; smart thinking! Again, my apologies, and let me know if you need anything else!

Happy I did well on this one. The reason I chose the obit template is because I had to laugh when I first saw it. Morbid yes, but the funny thing is (to me anyway) why on earth would someone write an article that reads like an obit? Guess I was trying to be funny. CVUA?

Hey Jackson,

Seeing how your adoption programme is going, I was wondering if you'd be interested in starting a CVUA course on similar lines along with me.. I'm interested in having one curriculum for CVUA so that we can channel most trainees in the academy there, so that more than one CVUA adopter can look into their course and guide them. Would you be interested?

TheOriginalSoni (talk) 15:46, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm definitely interested (you'll note that I already have it listed as extra credit for my course), and, as a CVUA graduate myself, I found it very beneficial. I would love to work with you (and possibly User:Nerdfighter?) to standardize the curriculum and post in an educational program format. Honestly, though, I'm in much the same boat as User:Kudpung in terms of busy-ness - I appreciate your kind remarks regarding the efficiency of my course, but I am just starting off, my priority is my grant until I fulfill it to the community's expectations, and I do teach a "real" university course and take courses, too.
However, with that said, I really think that adoption and CVUA make a huge difference in (quality) editor retention and recruitment. I'm very interested in making this a priority after I "finish" WP:VIDTUT (I'd like to keep it going long-term, but the terms of the grant need to be finished). I think this is an appropriate time to consult the community's leaders in editor retention as to whether we have quantifiable measures of editor retention as a result of adoption and CVUA as well as quality edits. I don't want to volunteer him, but just to call him out for some guidance, does User:West.andrew.g have any suggestions on how one can determine this? Also, I'd like to ask Asaf Bartov and User:Sage Ross (WMF) of WMF as to whether or not they think that this would be a fundable project: as I stated, I'm extremely interested in making "learning" Wikipedia a major priority and recruiting (both mentors and mentees) on a large scale while giving everyone an individualized program, and I think I've got a good start using the Education Program. Visual editing will improve accessibility to editing as a whole but likely increase vandalism. Input, everyone? --Jackson Peebles (talk) 17:56, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I'm not sure what "this" is, in the question about funding. What exactly is being proposed? Ijon (talk) 19:58, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, Ijon. There's nothing being proposed, yet, which is why this is just a talk page question. Do you think that Wikimedia would financially support an effort to standardize Adoption and CVUA training? Namely, through compensation of the editors who spend the time to get it up and running...? --Jackson Peebles (talk) 20:29, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
I can't say, before a concrete proposal is on the table. But might we? Absolutely. And if we do, it would be through the Individual Engagement Grants program, most likely. If you (pl.) are interested, check it out and get involved at the IdeaLab, where you can start sketching the idea collaboratively! Ijon (talk) 07:24, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Ijon; that's exactly the sort of guidance that I was hoping for. Much appreciated! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 04:58, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Your addition removed a citation, replacing it with unsourced content that is critical of a person who is protected by WP:BLP policies. If you can add this information back in with proper sources, a proper tone, proper grammar, and without saying that it "caused a lot of laughs," it would probably be suitable for inclusion.

Request to revoke account creator permission

While I may have use for this permission in the future for my work with the Education Program, I have not had to use the account creator permission a single time to date, as all of my students have just created their own accounts, and I wish to avoid having this right for security purposes and to avoid having others seek me out for assistance in creating an account when I am not knowledgeable about ACC on the toolserver. I do wish to keep all of my other rights, which I use regularly. Joe "Tiger" Patrick II

Good morning, regarding the article Joe "Tiger" Patrick II. I have been in contact with Mr. Patrick regarding an image for the article. He has actually given permission for me to use a particular picture in the article. He is going to contact the newspaper photographer who took the picture and get their permission as well so I don't have to use the fair use clause. What should I tell him needs to be done on his part? Does he need to send me an email or what? He doesn't have a whole lot of access to computers (he is still on his walk), his phone service isn't always all that great, and he doesn't like to use too much battery power between stops. In other words what do i need from him that proves i have his permission? Right now, all I have is text messages and phone calls. Last contact with him i just told him to let me know what the photographer says, but would like to be able to tell him what he needs to do when he gets back to me. Thanks TattØØdẄaitre§ lĖTŝ tÅLĶ 15:40, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Wayne RD-9000 Edit Removal

Dear Mr. Peebles

In review of your choice to remove my "addendum" about the Wayne RD-9000, I feel your edit/removal was uninformed. As it is, I am the owner of the prototype vehicle, and I will keep the information of said vehicle to myself until further notice. I was just trying to let readers see that at least one of the prototypes exists to this day. I should been contacted to verify my addendum. I will not dispute your removal as it is a waste of my time.

This isn't just you, it's to hold me accountable for making sure you know your stuff (even if you do, if I have any doubt, I want to make sure). Please take a look back through your first exam. Thanks, good job, and keep it up! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 02:45, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your contribution. Please note that this article is in the draft phase on my user page, and therefore it is not ready for scrutiny. I have pre-populated numerous articles with the Task Force 60 link, so this Task Force 60 article will not be orphaned. Also, I will populate this article with the categories appropriate for U.S. naval task forces. I ask that you don't jump the gun and allow me to launch this article when it is ready.Marcd30319 (talk) 12:09, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Marcd30319, thank you for addressing this so politely. I apologize if I got in the way of any edits that you're making when I was doing general cleanup, and I respect and admire the fact that you're drafting content for Wikipedia. Happy editing, and let me know if I can do anything to help! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 17:47, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Please elaborate how adding README.1ST and History isn't constructive?
And how Summarizing my edit as "(identified as test/vandalism using STiki)"

What is STiki?

I'm a human being that has been there, and done that. I ran IBM 360
mainframes and DEC PDP-8s and PDP-11s with 16 K of core and 256BPI
magnetic tapes for NASA. My first home computer was a 6 foot tall
rack of equipment that plugged into the 220 V electric stove outlet
in the kitchen.
My fifth home computer was a 16KB IBM PC (serial number under 400)

I speak from experience. I've seen README.1ST files, README.DOC and
!README files on DECUS tapes from the 1970s.

How is adding "README.1ST" as "Information that you need to read before
you get to the General Information" considered "test / vandalism"?

How is adding "Some readme files have been seen with !README as the
first part of the filename to take advantage of the sorting - the "!"
(exclamation point) character sorts ahead of "A" and would be the
first file in the directory list." considered "test / vandalism"?

I mounted and read DECUS tapes on PDP-11s at NASA/JPL in Pasadena.
The DECUS software (like the compilers) was frequently better than the DEC stuff.

The DOC suffix indicated "DOCumentation" in the 1970s, long before
the IBM PC was introduced in 1981. Word didn't show up until 1983.
Yes, Microsoft hijacked the DOC suffix. They could have used WRD for Word.
If you want to use a less inflammatory term that "hijacked", go ahead.

Wikipedia is supposed to be an online encyclopedia. An encyclopedia
has history in it. I added history:
- "The first time this contributor saw a "readme" file was on a
- Digital Equipment Computer Users' Society DECUS free software
- magnetic tape around 1970 or 71. It was a single file on the
- beginning of the tape, containing notes about the tape itself,
- a list of contributors and their contact information, and
- then several paragraphs documenting each contributed file.

− Anybody have any older history?

How is adding something that is a part of Wikipedia considered vandalism - especially
when I'm ASKING for additional knowledgeable contributions to an article? Us
old farts are dying off and our knowledge and history is dying with us.

You reverted my contribution. Fine. Let's go through my contribution,
item by item, and see what parts you have issues with. Let's resolve
this.

Post your response here and I'll check this page tonight (Sunday) or tomorrow.

Hello, and thank you for your detailed response and for taking the time to address this issue with me. By the tone of your indignation, it sounds as though I have "ruffled some feathers," per say, which I understand, as editing Wikipedia takes a good deal of time, and it's certainly frustrating whenever anyone comes along and reverts an edit. STiki has a number of options for automatically notifying the user of the edit; in this case, I thought that, due to your relatively lengthy edit, you would benefit from knowing that there were issues with it.
Now, please note that calling an edit unconstructive is not an attack on you or even your work; rather, it is a critique of the work itself. You omitted several portions of your edit in your post above. One can refer to the diff to see what I'm referring to.
  1. Your first edit is redundant. The usage of DOC is mentioned later in the article.
  2. Saying that Microsoft "hijacked" the page would be vandalism, in my interpretation. This appears to be a violation of WP:SOAP.
  3. Changing "upper case" to UPPER CASE is just unnecessary and is grammatically incorrect. Please see WP:MOS. This addition is also uncited.
  4. Your edit about "readme first" articles is a fragment and violates WP:MOS, though I do think that it would be a constructive edit if it were properly sourced. Please see WP:RELIABLE, WP:CITE, and WP:SOURCE.
  5. Your history section definitely needs a citation.
  6. Posting a question on a Wikipedia page is not acceptable. Posting it to the talk page is an excellent idea. You point out numerous times in your response that this is an encyclopedia. In my experience, encyclopedias don't ask questions.

I respect the fact that you're a human being and have been there and done that. In fact, there's a good likelihood that you know computers substantially better than I do. However, I am going to have to insist that you cite your sources, do not use loaded words against corporations without evidence that their actions fit the definition of "hijacking," and meets the manual of style. Had the edit been such that I could have fixed it, I would have. However, not one of your additions was sourced. I urge you to consider my comment on your talk page rather than the edit summary, which is meant to be an explanation of what I did (and it did accurately - I reverted an edit that I identified as vandalism). Your edit was unconstructive. It did not improve the encyclopedia. At the time of my initial reading, it appeared as though there was both vandalism ("hijack") and testing (asking the question). In hindsight, perhaps I should have assumed good faith, but I stand by my analysis of your edit.

If you can add citations, references, use proper formatting, and use the talk page, I'll be happy to permit your edits. Please feel free to ask me in the future if you have any questions about policy, which I consider myself relatively well-versed in. I do ask that, on my talk page, you do not page break with every sentence, though, simply for the sake of aesthetics. If you find issue with my response, you may seek dispute resolution. --Jackson Peebles (talk) 19:50, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

In response to your comments on John R. Saunders and Virginia General Assembly, 1916-1917

Hey there, Jackson. Thanks for the feedback. You guessed correctly; both of these articles are works in progress! Recently, I've been working hard on topics related to the history of the Virginia General Assembly, and I appreciate your words of praise as well as your suggestions. I added some refs to Saunders, but I'm gonna hold off a bit before putting inline citations in the other one, as there's still some more things I want to add. Definitely on my to-do list. Cheers.
