User:E tac and his new WP:POINT war[edit]
User:E tac, and his newfound understanding of WP:FU has decided to go a POV hunt for promo images. He is targetting artists that he does not like and tagging the promo pictures he finds as replaceable. I won't argue over the tag as I believe they are just that. However, the editors choice of targets(bands he hates) and the fact that he is not taking the time to notify the image uploaders of the replaceable tag seems to indicate that he is doing this as a personal vendetta to make up for his own ignorance when it comes to Wikipedia's rules and guidelines. Just thought, as you have had a great deal of contact with the editor, that you would find his new tactics disturbing. Thank you. 142.166.250.133 21:18, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

- That is ridiculous, I am only doing what has been done to images that I have uploaded under the same criteria. In fact I have given much more explanation on my images than these. Also did I not point out that the Iron Maiden image may not be FU to you? I love Iron Maiden, so so much for the POV attack claims, and reguardless of if I like the bands or not has nothing to do with if it is FU or not, correct? Archived Ref Desk page not up-to-date[edit]

Look for example at this edit. In the "yellow" text that is being removed you see the word "neutered" occurring in each of the eight(!) January 6 sections. However, in the archived version at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Archives/Science/2007 January 6 the word "neutered" does not occur at all. This archived version was created at 00:04, January 8, 2007 and has not been updated since. NPWatcher[edit]
The page on NPWatcher mentioned that one should leave you a message on your talk page after adding oneself to the request list, so here's my message. I haven't looked to see what my edit count is, but if my edit count looks a little low, take into account that one, my favorite activity is newpage patrolling (which is why this tool caught my eye) so I've tagged a lot of pages as speedy deletes which get deleted and therefore don't count towards my edits, two, I'm contributing from a dial-up connection, and three, I've been working on detailed re-writes of certain biographies that survived AfD with a suggestion of cleanup (some pro gamers' biographies)recently, making one huge edit each rather than a lot of little ones. Can you take a look at this image; Image:Brighteyes-live3-0205.jpg. It was taken from the link sourced, but it was a photography taken by Sylvia Korving, so I believe the copyright tag is incorrect. However, I don't know what to replace it with. This image was uploaded after I removed the previous picture on the page because it was replaceable, much like I think this is unless the photographer gives specific permission. Cole Mediation[edit]
Thanks for all your good work on the Cole dispute. I'm adding my thoughts here instead of there, as per your request. Briefly, I would find wholly unsatisfactory any outcome in which Karsh's specific attack is included but not Cole's specific response. There are three objections to including Cole's response: the BLP objection, the RS objection, and what might be called the "false-specificity" objection. None of these is compelling enough to override the basic and self-evident issues of fair play and NPOV that are at stake. To go through them one at a time:
- the BLP objection: The least serious. The argument that Cole's response is "name-calling" or "unencyclopedic" is very weak and subjective, and could just as plausibly (if not more plausibly) be said of the attacks he's responding to. In any case the argument that it is potentially defamatory to dismiss accusations as "outrageous" or even "beneath contempt" is silly. Maybe in North Korea it would be dicey to talk this way about Dear Leader, but the idea that Cole's words could be in any way actionable in any Western democracy is ludicrous.
- the RS objection. Armon's argument has much more integrity than Isarig's here. Obviously there's no problem in quoting Cole's blog in order to present his opinion of attacks on his blog; the argument that "blogs aren't RS" has no merit in this case. But Armon brings up the possibility that Cole threw up this blogpost as a veiled solicitation of readers to go and "fix" his wikipedia entry, and that therefore the issue of meatpuppetry arises. It's a respectable argument though not a compelling one. First of all, it's not for us to speculate about Cole's veiled motives. His blog is one the most popular and award-winning blogs on the internet; Armon's comparison between Cole posting something on "Informed Comment" and Cole posting something on the Wikipedia talk pages is invalid. Secondly, while meatpuppetry can be a serious issue, we cannot hope to police the boundary between wikipedia and the world. A thought experiment: let's imagine for a moment that Cole is far more outraged that Karsh's slur is repeated in Wikipedia than he was about its appearance in the New Republic in the first place. Quite a likely scenario, actually, since the average informed person will take accusations of paranoid antisemitism with a grain of salt when they're levelled in Marty Peretz's magazine, but may well think where there's smoke there's fire if they read them in Wikipedia. In any case, so let's say Cole decides to sue for libel. The legal bar for libel is very high; let's say Cole knows he won't win but hopes to either 'scare' the information off of wikipedia, or, failing that, to get it reported in wikipedia that he sued Karsh and the New Republic for libel. If we have good reason to believe the veiled motive of Cole's lawsuit is "to directly provide 'balancing' content" on wikipedia, as Armon puts it, do we then not mention the libel suit in our article? Of course we mention it; we cannot police the boundary between Wikipedia and the world. This is a section on criticism of Cole's blog; Cole's responses on his blog is obviously acceptable, and we can't rule it out on the basis of hunches about motives.
- the "false specificity" objection. This one says that we shouldn't turn this into Cole vs. Karsh, because the charge of antisemitism has broader currency, having been levelled by many. This argument is specious. First of all, the charge only has currency among a small handful of ideologically aligned writers in a small handful of ideologically aligned journals. Outside of this clique, Cole is a regular presence in the mainstream media, routinely called upon for his expertise and never accused of bigotry (much less conspiracy-minded paranoia). The broader context here is not that of regular charges of antisemitism being made against Cole; the broader context is, rather, regular charges of antisemitism being made by these sources against a wide variety of people with whom they disagree about Israeli policies in the occupied territories.
- Secondly and more importantly, Karsh's argument is much more specific – different in both degree and kind – from the general charge of antisemitism. The "Protocols" represent antisemitism at its most vicious and paranoid; they were a notorious hoax calculated to create mass delusion and hysteria, and to alchemize this delusion and hysteria into violent bigotry and even pogrums. To say that the work of a prominent scholar of the Middle East "resonates powerfully" with the obsessions of this hoax is a far more serious charge than saying that this or that line of argument entails antisemitism. Cole's commentary on a speech by Larry Summers is in no way a proper substitute for his response to the attack by Karsh; to use it as such is, moreover, to engage in OR. Summers was talking about antisemitism "in effect if not intent," i.e. the most benign kind (if any kind of AS can be called benign), at the absolute opposite end of the antisemitism spectrum from the violent and hateful paranoias of the Protocols. The only thing beyond the Protocols on the virulent end of the AS spectrum would be Mein Kampf. Karsh is the only person anywhere to liken Cole's work to the Protocols, and it is self-evident that if we include such an unusual, extreme, and incendiary charge then we must include Cole's response to it, and not his take on very different, more general charges levelled by people other than Karsh against people other than Cole on other occasions.
One last thing. Isarig is anxious that we include Karsh's academic title and position in the body of the text, but not the name of the publication that ran his attack (if we include the name of the New Republic, he says, that will amount to "poisoning the well"). If Isarig prevails here, we will be giving the entirely misleading impression that an academic argument has been made about the powerful influence of the Protocols on Professor Cole's work. None has. No peer-review academic journal has printed or ever would print an article claiming this.

I would like to echo several of G-Dett's very well made points, specifically his her answers to the RS and BLP objections, which represent my feelings on those two aspects. I feel that preceding any efforts to compromise on language for the article is the notability of the charges themselves, which ought to be critically reflected upon. The charges represent a tiny minority and aren't biographical because no one contests their factual inaccuracy.
However, I recognize that stability and compromise are priorities. Still, compromise and consensus between editors of very different opinions is not always synonymous with "best for the article" or "conforms to guidlines". Though I am somewhat new here, I imagine that beyond playing nice with co-editors, an occasional guiding hand of definitive judgment is necessary, and that sober outside judgment is just as much solicited by parties seeking mediation as is compromise between their positions. But I recognize and appreciate efforts you have already made to do this with respect to uncivil/non relevant comments and the like, so you seem admirably aware of this.
The Karsh issue appears to be a one time op-ed that never became a reported controversy by a neutral third party (which distinguishes it from more legitimate controversies like, for instance, the Trump/O'Donnel feud or the O'Reilly/Letterman feud) and one editor specifically argued that this was notable as a controversy. If the charge is not biographical, it should at least be notable, but it appears to be neither and I imagine that alternative citations would run into the same problem.
But, barring consideration of this and instead looking for a compromise, I think your skeletal suggestion is agreeable, and I also think Isarig's most recent suggestion as discussed under "Isarig's Compromise" is agreeable. The later would be a happy resolution of a very long dispute, but in my opinion, the former might be slightly stronger in that it keeps the editors less directly involved in the contentious back and forth details of the situation they are trying to represent. It is more generalized, abstracted, and less likely to become contentious. Abbenm 04:25, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

I also think that there should be a checklist followed before an article is speedy-deleted (contact author, verify number of pages that link to the article under consideration, read talk page for author's reasoning and other editor's positive and supportive comments, etc) that the admin doing the deletion would have to sign off on. Also I would like to see records kept of which admin's speedies were disputed or found to not comform to the rules, or the assertions of the admin on the checklist found to be inaccurate. I attempted to db-band Chris Gilbreath. Unfortunately, after clicking "band", the program froze. It then said the page appears to have been deleted and refreshed, and it was still there (in NPW and Firefox). MartinBotII tests for Version 1.0 work[edit]
Hi Martin, I was wondering if we could continue the testing of MartinBotII for Version 1.0? Eyu100 has suggested getting rid of the linkranking and rewriting MartinBotII to incorporate a manual method of ranking, because of the bug we saw next time. I'm strongly against that, I'd rather fix the bug if we can and use the linkranking - do you think that is possible? What do you think?
I don't want to be a pest if you're busy, but I know a lot of people are holding their breath waiting for us to get this system working! Martin, I know you're not having an easy time getting online. I had planned to wait until you were fully available again to talk to you on IRC, but I figured that while you're offline, at least I could give you something to work on... to ease the Wikipedia withdrawls. ;)
Deletion tab:
- Delete (attack) would be much better as Delete (attack) and warn. {{attack}} would work nicely for this. It only has one optional parameter: the attack page name.
- Delete (R1) could be more descriptive, along with the other redirect CDS. How about Delete (R1 - no target) or Delete (R1 - non-existant)?
- Delete (R2) -> Delete (R2 - user page)
- Delete (R3) -> Delete (R3 - typo) or Delete (R3 - implausible)
- A button for CSD G8 (talk page of non-existent article) perhaps? {{db-talk}} or {{csd-g8}} works.
Maintenance tab:
- Mark with {{notenglish}} would be a great addition since {{db-foreign}} is only applicable for pages copied from non-English Wikipedias.
- Mark with {{copyedit}} would be nice.
- Mark with {{howto}} as well.
- Mark with {{sections}} would be useful on 90% of newpages which aren't speedied. lol
- Mark with {{introrewrite}} perhaps?
- Mark with {{context}} or Mark with {{expert}}?

Hi, I have a dispute with User:Greg_L over an edit in Celsius. My problem is less with the article than his intolerable, unsociable behavior. The user seems intent on provocation rather than discussion. His latest words in the Talk:Celsius tantamounts to a personal assault. In my talk page, he alleged that I have little right to correct an edit, citing my lack of an engineering degree.
Some of his comments borders on snobbish elitism. I do not want to be drawn in, but can you please educate this user on Wikipedia civility and democracy. His attacks on me are troll-like and is calculated at bullying and warring, not consensus. I stand by what I have to say about the subject. You can see if what I say is an improvement or a vandalism. - OK - thanks. My concern with Interiot's wannabe Kate tool was the time it takes for those with more contribs. The reason that the other one is out of date is due to toolserver replag, which should be reduced/eliminated in the next few months as the server gets upgraded, then we'll have quick and up to date edit counts. The system used doesn't really bother me, as I tend to do a manual contrib check, due to the time one tool takes, and the outdatedness of the other. Good work on the template, Snowolf. - At the moment, the only tools that are working correctly seems Interiot's and Essjay's. If you prefer, there is no problem in switching to Essjay's, which should work faster. BTW, as you probably saw, I've created a simple template for warning users that their NPW application has been processed. Take a look at it. Of course, if you want to modify, you're welcome (NPW it's yours ;-) ).

Archiving[edit]
The Humanities, Miscellaneous, and Science desks had all already been archived by Werndnabot up through February 28th, I've therefore reintegrated all of these archives, and slapped a modified set of navigation templates on them to try and patch them together. WikiProject peer reviews and the bot[edit]
Quick question: how does the bot identify the links to copy over to the central listing? Does it pick up any new transclusion, or does it look for something in particular (e.g. "/Peer review/" in the subpage name, etc.)?
(The reason I'm curious is that WP:MILHIST has recently moved over to a consolidated review department that includes not only peer reviews but also FACs, FARs, etc. If we add {{WikiProject peer review}} to the page, will all of them get copied over to WP:PR, or is the bot sophisticated enough to only pick up the peer review subpages?) I don't know if it's appropriate for me to comment on the mediation page for this article, since I was not named as a party, but I strongly encourage you to read the talk page for the article as well as the AfD results for a related article which was supposed to have been merged into this one. Bridge & Tunnel keeps trying to link Frank R. Wallace to a historic version of that article to avoid the AfD results. Problem with MartinBotII[edit]
I have noticed that MartinBotII has a tendency to add the same transculsion file for Wikiproject peer reviews multiple times. For instance, In the March 2 run the bot added entries for "Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation", "Dreamgirls (film)", "Mr. Lady Records", and "The Hudsucker Proxy" despite the fact that these transclusion files were already listed at Wikipedia:Peer review at the time the addition was made. Suspected conflict of bot edits with non Latin Alphabet[edit]
Hi, I am not sure if it was your bot, Martinbot, or the vandal 65.73.0.75 but the letters not in the Latin alphabet got messed up in the article about Emerald Buddha.
I have fixed (or so it seems to me) the weirdness, by manually re-reverting to the edit by Filipo2.

The bot caught my switch of Poetic journal to Poetic Journal. For uniformity sake, I wanted to capitalize the J in "Journal". I will update linked sites ASAP. Vandalism???[edit]
Your bot reverted my bot because of "vandalism", ironically I was actually trying to revert the vandalism, eventhough I messed it up at first (I got there in the end though), can you look at the Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones page please, is it more of my fault or the bots fault, thanks. - Hi - thanks for reporting it. It seems to have been an edit conflict, but the bot should pick them up. My only other guess is that the Wikipedia software made a slight error in not noticing the edit conflict, or threw an error which confised the bot, making it resave the page. Hope this makes sense! - Actually, I have my doubts about that. The edit summary matches the action taken exactly, which means that it is unlikely to be a race condition. Given the volume of edits enwp gets, I doubt a mediawiki race condition would have survived this long; saving a page requires a write to a database, after all, which would act as a lock. It could be a bug in your bot code, of course, but every mediawiki bot framework I have seen handles edit conflicts gracefully.
- I have a suspicion that it isn't a bug at all. Rather, it is an explicitly designed action triggered by the edit summary of the edit it was reverting. In this case, the summary contained a depiction of part of the vandalism, which might easily have matched a number of relevant regexps. — Kaustuv Chaudhuri 21:18, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps, though in the past few days there has been a bug with edit conflicts caused by some DB problems. You're right to note that WP is a huge site, but as we get more edits, server load increases and the frequency of outages, problems and the dreaded "Wikipedia has a Problem" message increases. The bot uses pywikipedia for editing, and the bot often throws edit conflicts, hence it becoming my suspicion that it must be to do with WP, as there is nothing in the code that would allow this sort of thing to happen. The other possibility is that the edits were sent at exactly the same time, and both processed by WP in the wrong sort of order. For now, it's something that we'll never know, I think.
