Your peer review comments on shoe polish
[edit]Hi Nichalp, thanks for your comments. I'll do my best with them. And for the picture - that's motivation! ;) The only comment I am unsure about is the 'dubious copyright nature' of the image ... ? I thought promotional images were ok to use, but then I again, I don't know much about image copyrights. Proto t c 12:00, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

Dragonfly list
[edit]Thanks for your suggestions regarding List of Dragonfly species recorded in Britain. Could you tell me which particular items of text you think ought not to be in bold font? Quite happy to get rid of some of it if there is too much. The red links are deliberate - I'm trying to encourage other people to write articles on all these species, so that I don't have to. Many thanks - SP-KP 18:07, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
Mumbai
[edit]I'm having a dispute with a user on the definition of 'Mumbai'. (Template Talk:Mumbai infobox). Mumbai is defined by the two districts. This area is called the Mumbai metropolis. A city/metropolis in India is defined by a municipality. He cites the MMRDA website (see the map). [MMRDA is a state govt. initiative, not a municipality].
Unfortunately the term "Mumbai" is not used at all outside the municipal limits as defined on the Mumbai page, and is not considered a part of the city by anyone of us here, or by residents in those area, (New Bombay/Kalyan etc.). =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:13, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Hindi
[edit]Hi Nichalp, can you fix up the Hindi wikibook a bit? For example http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Hindi:Basic_Hindi contains links to pictures of the words instead of just having the devangari written there. If you could fix that, that would be great. Even better would be to record sound samples, but that would be asking a lot. Or maybe you would know someone that would like to help with that? I am just starting to learn Hindi, starting with learning the alphabet, and I found our Hindi material is not very good so far. Our Hindi article doesn't even have the devangari for all the consonants. I reallized my response message on my talk page sounds a lot harsher than I meant it, and I do appreciate that you thought of me. Thanks - Taxman Talk 14:54, August 16, 2005 (UTC)
London
[edit]It will depend on how you define London - see London#Defining London - but I would generally call those areas home counties and not London: however, parts of the traditional counties are now in Greater London or within the M25. -- ALoan (Talk) 15:10, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- They are not in London (although historically, Surrey covered much of what is now South London, with historic Kent in what is now SE London, they aren't generally considered to be "London" now - except for cricketing purposes!) jguk 18:10, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- Greater London is well-defined now (I mean the concept, I haven't read the article). I suggest going with data for Greater London, jguk 06:50, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
- Agreed - just be specific about which "London" you are talking about: City of London (the extremely central "square mile") is likely to be too narrow, as is Inner London. On the other hand, Greater London is well defined, but includes lots of suburban areas. -- ALoan (Talk) 09:52, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hi - many thanks for your reply. Could you expand on your first comment - which text do you believe is unnecessary (or did you mean unnecessary formatting?). My view is that bold has been used correctly, but if others disagree, I'm happy to remove any bold formatting which causes a problem. However, I can't do that unless you tell me which items you think are bold which shouldn't be.
Also, I didn't understand why you suggested that I create stubs for the red-linked species, as I had explained why I hadn't. If I have misunderstood your message, please try again. - SP-KP 18:04, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Belgium
[edit]I have made a lot of changes within Belgium most according to your suggestions.
- I think reducing more the before independence section would be too much. It is important in this section to keep a NPOV and treat all periods of time on a same neutral footing. We cannot only pick out the parts of history which seem to lead to the building of a Belgian, Flemish or whatever nation (as was done in the past -- see discussion about why Belgium is not featured anymore).
- Don't you think this is a matter of taste whether the subtitles in Culture and Before Independence are kept or not. I personally have the feeling they really help the reader.
- I have separated the section communities, regions and provinces from politics. This section can definitively not be merged with Geography. It can be with politics but not geography because the territoriality of the Communities is not that simple. This can even lead to NPOV conflicts if not carefully done.--131.220.68.177 09:52, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
OK. Now the introduction seems ok to me. Belgium is a small country with high population density in the middle of Western Europe. Second Belgium is characterised by two languages and the resulting conflicts and complicated history and institutions. The name of Belgium is not relevant because it leads to the wrong opinion that Belgium existed in the antiquity. --131.220.68.177 13:46, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Well I don't think the history of the name is that interesting: it must be mentioned but not here. If I well understand what you mean, you are looking for something which could make the intro a bit appealing. I thought about the following but I have the feeling that's not that politically correct:
- The Belgians are well-known for their French fries, their chocolates and their eternal quibbles.
What do you think?--131.220.68.177 14:26, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Dragonflies
[edit]Many thanks for your very useful comments about bold text and references - I will implement these changes on the page as soon as I can.
With regard to the redlinks, if you would like something done about those, I think you should probably make these comments to Dsdmgold not to me, as it is his idea that the list be nominated for promotion to Featured List status. I am happy to make changes to the list page to improve it for readability etc, and if these also help it to become a featured list, that's good. However, it's unlikely that I'll have time to create stubs for all species on the page though, still less full articles. - SP-KP 19:05, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Flag of Belarus FAC
[edit]To answer your concerns:
- I moved some of the material around to where the current flag and it's information is fist, then you have the historical flags afterwards
- Use since 1991 has been changed to 1995 to reflect the year it was replaced
- I removed the brackets
- I added the meaning of the colors. While the meaning of the green did not change, the meaning of the red color did changed slightly. The red in the BySSR flag stood for the revolution, the current flag used red to symbolize the armies of the past defending Belarus.
- I have no clue what the flags are made out of, since I do not know what the law requires (if at all).

- I looked at my userpage and remembered it. As to the articles, we probably need to build consensus on the structure of them at the wikiproject (it seems pretty good as it stands, however) and then see if we can change the articles accordingly. Also, you may want to consider adding the infobox to the articles. Happy festival-ing :D — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 13:39, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

- Try organizing it a little, and adding a history section. Also, you can change the color of the infobox. You should do the subst: thing and change the colors to match the country it's celebrated in, etc. — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 20:16, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

Janmashtami
[edit]Hello, Nichalp. I need help again. Could you tell me when Janmashtami is, please ? The article didn't say when, but it's listed on Template: Current events for August 27. I checked on the 'Net, and theholidayspot.com says August 26, but 123greetings.com says August 27. My question on Talk:Janmashtami went unanswered. When should this holy day appear on the MainPage ? - Regional differences. Happens often and for many festivals. I have checked that it is on 26th for Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Tintin 07:06, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
- I've posted "Janmashtami in Hinduism (2005)" on the MainPage template for both the 26th and the 27th. Could you add the dates to the Janmashtami page, please ? I wouldn't know which place celebrate this day on what day. Thanks. -- PFHLai 07:17, 2005 August 25 (UTC)

Nick, There are another article called Krishna Janmaashtami which talks about Janmashtami from a South Indian perspective. The names Gokulashtami, Sreekrishna jayanti (incorrectly mentioned in the article as Sree jayanti) are terms used in the South. 'little feet drawn with flour paste' is also a South Indian custom, afaik. Shouldn't they be merged ? Tintin 08:08, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

Great ! Thanks for handling the anon's edit. I've made Dahi Handi a redirect to Krishna Janmaashtami in case there are people searching for this today. Dahi Handi somehow reminds me of the Chinese Bun Festival, with buns instead of pots with curd, and more "competitive". :-)
Happy Janmaashtami, Nick. Have fun with the camera. :-) -- PFHLai 18:57, 2005 August 26 (UTC)
- Thanks for sharing the pictures. The Krishna Janmaashtami page really looks better with them. I find it quite cute that the people in the pyramid even wear uniforms. One things may be obvious but I ain't sure: When the Dahi-Handi is broken, would the curd and butter inside drop on everyone in the pyramid ? I suppose this is the fun part for the kids, eh ? :-) -- PFHLai 18:11, 2005 August 27 (UTC)
- Competing teams ? Now that's just like Bun Festival. But kids that young won't get to the buns. BTW, I've added your nice picture to the Pyramid page. -- PFHLai 18:55, 2005 August 27 (UTC)

Yes, there is VAT on goods imported from outside the EU - as the article says VAT is generally charged at the border, at the same time as customs duty when goods enter the EU from other states. Thank you for participating at the german Wikipedia. But, please, never put articles in who're translated with google; the hit rate is poor and many sentences don't make any sense. Castella de Aguada
[edit]Sorry not to answer. I've just arrived home. Castle by the Sea would be in Portuguese (if you are talking about Portuguese language) would be "Castelo à beira mar" ou "castelo do mar". Castella is probably an arcaic word for a fortress (fortaleza). Castle is "castelo" (male) or castello (old Portuguese), castella (female) would mean "small castle".
Aguada is a provision of drinkable water for sea-travels or a place where you can get water, it is also the name of a Brazilian tree. "De" means "of" (neutral) so it is the "Castle of Aguada".
It surelly is a small castle that has a relation with water.
sea = mar (from Latin mare) water = água (from Latin aqua) castle= castelo (from Latin Castellu) maritime =marítimo (from Latin maritimu) ocean = oceano (from Latin Oceanu)
- np. It is a beautiful name though. The "ll" is read as separated "l" so castel'la, not like Spanish. --Pedro 12:17, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
- well, there isnt the "ll"/"lh" sound in English, maybe that sound is the closest English has, I dont known. The Spanish "ll" is the Portuguese "lh" and the Italian "gl". Castella (Spanish) is also "land of castles" (sort of). That's the name of the main Spanish kingdom that formed Spain. --Pedro 12:44, 29 August 2005 (UTC)

Tamil FAs
[edit]Yeah. It's unfortunate that India is not featured in Tamil Wikipedia. UK got the focus there as it came in the news section. I'll try and translate the remaining sections of "culture" and "demographics" before nominating it for FA status. As for Tamil Nadu, it is almost only a translation + cleanup of the current English article. It could easily become a FA there as the bar is quite low. Doing that here would require a lot of effort. Let's see if we can make it here. For your first demand of getting India to FA status there, I can assure you that it'll be done in a week. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 11:30, August 29, 2005 (UTC)

Fair use vs public domain
[edit]Hi! I want to scan a picture of a former Indian sports star. Our newspaper has published a photo of him, but the photo is pre-1945, which means copyrights to the original photo have expired. So if I scan the image from the newspaper is it PD or faiuse? Thanks. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:22, August 29, 2005 (UTC)
- Keep in mind that I am not a lawyer, just someone who is interested in copyright law. That said, if the copyright has expired, and your scan is as accurate as possible, and you don't pick up any of the surrounding newspaper text, and India law is similar to that of the US, then the image is in the public domain. --Carnildo 18:12, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
- Are you sure pre-1945 means the copyright expired? Is that by law in India? Following US law, items before 1945 may have expired, but we wouldn't know for sure unless we looked up to see if they renewed their copyright (they had to back then). Only things 1923 and before are guaranteed to have expired. If it has expired then it's definitely PD. DreamGuy 19:23, August 29, 2005 (UTC)
- Regarding your post on my talk page, I don't even know that the law in India makes that much difference, as the servers are in the United States. The important question is its copyright status here, not elsewhere. Also keep in mind that you are asking about copyright on sometihng before 1945 and referring to a 1957 law, which isn't important. You need to find the laws that were in effect when the photo was made. DreamGuy 20:11, August 29, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I was wondering if you would take a second look at the article. I have attempted to address as many concerns that you have brought up as possible. Thanks. Pentawing 23:22, August 30, 2005 (UTC)
- I included the modifications that you suggested. However, for the media section, I am inclined to see it as culturally related, given that the section deals with stations and their contents rather than their transmission equipment and coverage area (unless you could give me a very good reason why the section, in its current state, should be in infrastructure). As for the University of Michigan template, someone else placed it there (for what reason I don't know). I might remove soon though. Pentawing 20:12, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the welcome back (: Glad to see that I was noticed, hehe. I couldn't really stay away, of course, the plusses outweigh the minuses here. —siroχo 04:19, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
Hello
[edit]Hello, Nichalp. I hope you don't mind if I "steal" your bright yellow box at the top of this page for my user pages? I've "applied" to be a mediator. Thanks! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 23:35, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
P.S. Would you mind expressing your opinion at WP:MC? I'm afraid the page isn't visited regularly by most Wikipedians. Thanks!
