Peacock

Can you explain this to me? Peacock words in my understanding are essentially weasel words which belie a bias. It is a subjective bias. In the case of award-wining - it does not imply bias, it is an objective fact. I must be missing something. This seems like a WP:COMMON right? Hi Shawn, when you screen the film online, the second title card credits: "Recorded at Association Screen Studios, Montreal" which is likely the studio that producer/director Stuart Legg used for editing. At the time, the National Film Board was in its infancy, and often would sub-contract work out for expediency. When I researched Banshees Over Canada, another documentary in the Canada Carries On series, Vancouver Motion Pictures, a local production house had been used to supplement the work of the National Film Board. The Defender

Now for something really surreal ... I hosted a visit from Bob Diemert and Chris Ball last year at our local chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society in Winnipeg. There was some apprehension that screening The Defender would make them uncomfortable, but nothing of the kind occurred. Both men enjoyed the silly parts in the documentary along with the rest of the audience and were kind enough to participate in a forum at the conclusion of the film. Rather than being the doofus duo as they were portrayed, they were able to lead the discussion on aviation design, and respond to all questions from a decidedly knowledgable crowd. I've seen the aircraft sources where the aircraft was called "Diemert Defender" but cannot be sure that was its actual name. The first prototype, at least, was always referred to as the "Defender". Well, none of your film articles are truly controversial: you should see what sorts of non-notable films get unsourced articles. The stuff about naming and category year, in my opinion these are truly minor details, and I hope you won't be too disappointed if things don't go exactly as you would wish. As I've mentioned, categories like films by year are really more for organizational purposes than navigation: all 1999 films share nothing in common, usually, except for the happenstance of coming out in a year. The best way to steer readers to a given article is internal links, and I've added some for your articles, as you know. Well-linked articles get to the top of Google search results, and clear lead paras. like the kind you write get reproduced in Google's Knowledge Graph synopses (eventually). Oh, I quite agree. Now, I've added links to this article from both Rosie the Riveter and Canadian Car and Foundry. Internal links are very important, and if I can think of other relevant incoming wikilinks -- or if you can -- they should be added. You might also look up The Story of Willow Run (1945) on IMDb, where the "real" Rosie actually was identified for the first time. Train Busters

Now for a real mishmash of stock footage, from pilots getting into one fighter aircraft, taking off in another, and attacking in a third different aircraft. I have to guess, however, that those continuity errors would probably be lost on the average viewer. I once wrote an article for a book on film mistakes and I used the dreadful Midway as a similar example. I have never seen anyone else comment on that film's lack of authenticity. No, it doesn't. But I just found a source I think is reliable, it's an interview with Abi Feijó (who should definitely have an article, he's THE name in Portuguese animation) saying just that. I'll add it to the article.--Cattus talk 21:37, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

That seems like a good idea. The source is this: [1]. It's not a major publication, it seems to be a local (Porto) site with mostly small interviews with people, some of them seem like they would meet notability requirements, others not so much. As far as I can tell, a few of the TV and digital categories are a bit different from last year — I've already had to split at least one of last year's TV program categories into two separate ones this year, for example. Muck away as needed. (And if you can find a source which actually lists which documentary and short film nominees actually go under which category — the ACCT's press release for those categories sucks mud, and just lists the films in an uncategorized and unsegmented mass list (grrrrrrrrr) — then that would be helpful too.) Weight of Chains

Hi, I prefer to go off the article talk page. I'm the editor who found and inserted the 'Srebenica' section of the synopsis. I won't tell you how hard and unpleasant it was to get that description in and to stay in (though known to be a contentious part of the film from day one). There are many OTHER claims in the film that some/many/most people would probably see as little better than conspiracy theories, but what 'some/many/most would probably see', isn't RS or neutral.

Bloor St. Culture Corridor: did you check source before renaming and moving?

You changed the "St." in "Bloor St. Culture Corridor" to "Street" - does the naming convention for streets apply to proper names? This is a promotional organization. Looking at the their web site and various press materials, the predominant form of the name is "Bloor St. Culture Corridor." Although some instances of "Bloor Street Culture Corridor" do appear in the official materials, it appears clear that the deliberately chosen form of the name is with the abbreviated "St." which is what I represented in the stub. --Tsavage (talk) 23:38, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Identifying other use name using the template found at WP:MULTIPLE

Thanks for the advice about my old account name of letterofmarque. I created that name for privacy resosn when working for the government of Nova Scotia. Once I started university teaching and then changed jobs, I gradually started using my own name so my students doing Wikipedia articles could find me. I didn't pay much attention to the differences until you drew my attention to it. I have added a template and explanation to the user pages now. Hope that does the trick. Golden Village et al.

Thanks for starting to work on the CCinBC article; and about Golden Village, I had put in it and Metrotown and to a lesser degree Coquitlam Centre as areas that were foci of Chinese commerce, and got a "citation needed" tag and a claim that it was original research; the existing pages weren't even looked at; elsewhere a statement that there was a Chinese community at Kensington and Sperling in Burnaby, based on some census data apparently; there is no such thing, I know that intersection it's completely residential and adjoins the overpass to the Sperling Skytrain station, there's not even a Chinese grocery there (and those were historically on every 3rd streetcorner in Vancouver and in Burnaby too; just as likely to be Indo-Canadian these days); and is if all of Vancouver and much of Burnaby weren't "a Chinese community" throughout.....

That being said your film link seems more suited to the Golden Village article; this page should be general coverage of Chinese society and history in BC, not an assemblage of everything from bibliographies/filmographies to randomly-pastiched data without context and masses of sociological/political-cultural critique from obscure academics and without any reference to history beyond the narrow lens of modern academic literature; there's lots of films about Chinese life in BC out there; we can't have sections on them all, no?

Just occurred to me while writing the following, what you added could be transferred into a footnote, if the bit I'd added about Golden Village and Metrotown got removed, as threatened, if it was not cited, then it obviously needs re-adding; I'm not sure the article about it was ever even looked at. Blinkers-on is like that. But as a cite, your item used as a cite/footnote should quell that objection to Golden Village's presence in that article, though as noted it's about a film about Golden Village....though definitely proves it's a "centre of Chinese commerce" or however I'd put it (the neighbourhoods surrounding No. 3 Road and the malls lining it are not necessarily purely-Chinese either; same as with Coquitlam Centre; though in the Metrotown area and Yaletown it's a given.

Golden Village being Chinese is obvious to a Canadian, and particularly a BCer, but that just ain't good enough for some folks, particularly ones who demand cites for every statement of any kind.

That an attempt to exclude by cite-challenge Golden Village is a demonstration of the lack of familiarity with the subject that has so many gaffes in the writing I won't comment further as I have enough already on the CCinBC talkpage and elsewhere. Once a lot of the clutter and op-ed POVism (which repeats the same material already elsewhere in the article and is mostly from one source only - Yee) is cleaned up and the article more readable it obviously has a place in the overall narrative of the article - including that it's not considered as "Chinatown" and in no small part because of the historical proper name of Chinatown in Vancouver itself (Richmond had had one, adjoining Steveston, by the way); no more than Metrotown or Oakridge or, these days, much of the Upper Levels of West Van and North Van....Skookum1 (talk) 12:35, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi nice to have another Canadian on board who sees the problems with this article and actually cares enough to work on it (2 or 3 I know don't and take it out on me because I do). Have a look at what I just did before going to bed and note the inline comments added, and that several passages are repeated nearly verbatim in different sections, with the same sources and no attempt to source from local media on many things where there's lots more coverage than in the academic sources that have been fielded/claimed as superior to all others.
There's still more of the "so-and-so, who is a professor at such-and-such, says in his/her paper/book/whatever" to be removed and much more very bad English composition to be fixed, and repetitive bits consolidated into something actually readable as good English, not point-form compilations of academic data; particularly the disjointed historical population figures; there's also yet lots of "Chinese men" and "Chinese persons" and "White [sic] persons" and more that could just be "Chinese" or should be "European Canadians" especially if the census is the cite. A table might be the best way to consolidate some of that; all of it was I'm sure just put in as padding to try to justify a Vancouver vs BC split.
There's a lot to be fixed in the way of bad writing as well as re NPOV - and a lot of junk that's just extraneous when not simply trivia, or repetition of trivia; that long passage detailing areas where Chinese populations are and contains repetitions, with page-cited refs for each repetition, of "Chinese are found throughout [Greater] Vancouver". Sperling and Halifax? I know that spot well, it's no more Chinese except in headcounts than any other part of Burnaby or Vancouver... how many times does someone have to cite the obvious that one good cite could provide, without needless neighbourhood detail; this is not titled "geography of Chinese populations in [Greater Vancouver]" nor is there call for such an article or content huh?
I'm going to bed, I live in Cambodia now and it's 12:48 am and I've often stayed up late trying to deal with all that has gone on about this article (including defending myself from a campaign to "deal with me" because I "interfered with" someone's "choices"). If you'd care to go through and consolidate repetitions, may be remove the Vancouver-centric subsections re Education and such which "enable" those repetitions, and fix the cases where "Chinese men" and "Chinese persons" can be simply "Chinese" or as applicable, "Chinese miners", "Chinese [railway] workers", "Chinese labourers", "Chinese merchants", "Chinese students" etc that'd be great; otherwise I'll try to get to that on my next edits sometime in the next 48 hours; along the way taking out the "ethnic Chinese" usages (unless they were in quotes, maybe I did remove one of those; there were seventy-eight in total) while also fixing a few very badly constructed sentences and fixing phrases like "the Vancouver Chinatown" with "Vancouver's Chinatown" etc.....bad English is one thing, see my talkpage's section on "Francophone Schools" to get an idea of the mentality I've been trying to deal with all by myself for far too long. I didn't realize you were in Asia now. That's great. As for working more on the main article myself, I'm sorry but I really have been working mainly in the film area these days -- as well as doing some gnomish work on some recent articles about Chinese Canadian film and book articles. There's so much room for improvement when it comes to the culture history of Canada, and Chinese cultural history in Vancouver -- which doesn't even have its own category, yet. So I have to respectfully decline your offer to become more involved in the main article. Now, that said, I see that your recent efforts to improve the article have not been contested, either on the article talk page or the edit history. I'd say more "tolerance" than "consensus", as that latter devil of a word has been largely used to condemn me and agitate to block me (in this case as so often before) by those who won't read my posts and take offence at them for their length; disrespecting me while claiming I disrespect other editors for expecting them to read the explanations of the issues and the procedural warfare that's been used in place of good-faith discussion and collaboration; see my recent comments on Viriditas' and Moonriddengirl's talkpages; Viriditas wanted me to focus on the page-cite issue, I repeated my longstanding contention it is only a red herring to obstruct work on the article and the introduction of more balanced and better-known sources which cover details in a way that the academics rarely do; and suggested I pick another topic to write on and work it towards a GA or FA (which is all about format technicalities and not about quality of content or NPOV); so instead I just took the bullshit by the horns and set at about the weed-whacking and so far haven't been molested in the course of doing so. So far, that is.....those who dislike me and others who have axes to grind will no doubt find something to drag me to WP:ANImal Farm again but per Viriditas' and Carrite's suggesestions to just ignore such procedural games, which are not a court and I am not required to testify, and have learned through bitter experience that it is not a constructive forum in any way; and a place which has given "consensus" a dark tone to me; informed consensus is one thing, but when it is only about editors/conduct and not about content issues then it is in violation of NPA, 99 times out of 100, more like 999 out of 1000.
Seeing consensus claimed about what a guideline says when it does not and when discussion boards are claimed to have approved/mandated something when they DIDN'T is par for the course these last few months; TheMightyquill has come forward to help quiz me about what sources and issues need addressing, so I am responding to him and have had a bit of time to go through all the massive dross in the article and start examining and descontructing and editing it for quality and NPOV: there is much to be done yet, and most BC editors out there have long since gone, with Franamax now dead, also, there's not many people informed about the subject matter, and a lot of interloping on guideline claims/rule-mongering by people with no familiarity with the subject nor any apparent desire to learn about it...'nuff said. My view is that those people who get all uppity about "walls of text" are subtextually complaining that it makes their brains hurt to have to think and perhaps don't understand a good deal of my vocabulary......"I don't like him, he makes me feel stupid" some of my friends get from others they know, to which a common reply is "he can't make you be stupid" or "well, you are.
That being said, I'm stunned at the marked contrast between the very negative comments about what "Whites" felt about and did to the Chinese from the academics and the sino-political historians like Yee; vs books like this which give very sympathetic and detailed coverage of Chinese life and customs in BC; there's two chapters in there, one on a Chinese funeral and another on a house servant and his family that are both very edifying and illuminating, and in very sharp contrast to the tone of commentary about "Whites" by Chinese authors. At the moment I'm looking for a certain account of early goldfields disputes with Americans, to counterbalance the one excerpted/cherrypicked item about Americans repelling Chinese back onto a steamboat near Hope, which was SYNTHed by the author cited to assert [all] Chinese were afraid of staking claims because of violence from [any] white men; the Governor's and Begbie's and the constabulary's response to such violence, which took teh Chinese side and asserted their rights to mine and live peacefully, are not mentioned in that source, and have been hotly contested by the person seeking to keep such facts out of the article. For what motive I have various notions which I've mentioned elsewhere, but for now won't explain, just plug at it; and may get to some Chinese Canadians bios much in need of doing, and also some noted on Talk:Indo-Canadians in British Columbia and Talk:Indo-Canadians in Greater Vancouver, which shouldn't be two articles but any attempt at a merge discussion will get buried in "walls of text" and were I to respond it will be me who gets drubbed for that "wiki-crime".
Anyways thanks anyway and yeah that's a good bit you came up with...it just belongs on the Golden Village page.

Correct category?

I am trying to confirm a secondary source states the documentary "Into the Cold: A Journey of the Soul" is the same film as "Alone on the Ice" as listed on PBS. A belated thanks!

I missed the edits you made to Sex Garage, but I did want to thank you for going in and doing some cleanup and fixes. I have a question: do you know if the building (that hosted the venue) is still standing? I'd love to be able to add some pictures to the article. I'm going to try to reach out and talk to the photographer, although I don't know if the photo can be uploaded with any copyright that would give us permission but not give anyone else permission to use the photo. I'm not very familiar with that process. If she's interested, is it OK if I point her in your direction for additional help on uploads?   • I figure I can upload it in a similar manner as with the image at Keshia Thomas, as that upload marked it as non-fair use but I want to make sure that I do this correctly. why do you think the election will be cancelled?

You reverted something that was absolutely true. Why? With two months and a week's worth of vacation between now and the dissolution of parliament, why do you think it's unreasonable to say that the summer/fall election won't be cancelled and put off until 2016, '18 or maybe even '32? Could you show me where and when a bill repealing the fixed term election act could be introduced and passed between now and the middle of next month. Please?!?!?!? @MelanieN:, how do I tell as a non-admin if it's been salted, other than doing a word search on the RPP rolling archive? I think that if I click on the redlink and the wiki doesn't automatically give me the option of (re)creating it, that means it's been protected -- right? If you click on the redlink it WILL give you the option of creating the article. But then when you choose to "create the article", it will show you the previous deletion history and a notice that the title has been protected. If you click on a redlink that never had an article, then you won't get any notice AFAIK. The RPP archive won't probably help you since most of these were protected without ever being listed at RPP. --MelanieN (talk) 15:36, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

The only editor active at SPI who ever paid any attention to anything I had to say on the matter was @JamesBWatson:. I've pinged him in case he wishes to intervene, yet again, on the question of merging these two parallel SPIs (far as I can tell) for the same sockpuppeter. Maybe there's a reason not to. Shawn, I confess I tend to run away from things to do with sockpuppet investigations such a merging cases, because in my early days as an administrator I tried doing things like that, and found it all got into a mess, because the software doesn't treat links to older cases in the way I expected. I never fully sorted out what was going on, so ever since I have just avoided the problem by not touching them. Another point is that some sockpuppet investigations can take an enormous amount of time and work to deal with properly, and since there is always a backlog of cases waiting for attention, I tend to think that such time as I am willing to spend on them can be more constructively employed in dealing with another case from the backlog, rather than spending a lot of time on neatening-up of a case that has already been done. It may well be that there are other administrators who have similar reasons for avoiding the problem, which will explain why even cases which obviously should be merged very often get left. Having said all that, I agree with you that these cases should probably be merged, and I will try to remember to come back to it when I think I have time, which right now I don't. speedily deleted- SARAR Participatory Methodolog

Hi Shawn,

Thank you for speedily deleting the page I had writted titled SARAR Participatory Methodology last week. I thought I could save as a draft and accidentally posted my article.

I wanted to check in with you and make sure that I can re-submit this article. After reviewing the rules again, I am sure that this article is not advertisting. I am a volunteer with an organization in Mexico called Sarar Transformacion. The organization uses the SARAR Methodology for their work, but the two are seperate entities.

SARAR Methodology could be compared to other similar articles on Wikipedia like CLTS and WASH (both are methodologies for working in the water and sanitation sector). There are dozens of published articles by third parties on the SARAR Methodology that I have found and will correctly cite in my revised version.

Please let me know if you have any tips or suggestions on how to proceed!
