Reactivate WOSlinkerBot Task 2?

I noticed you did an Adminbot task back in December 2018 to fix multiple unclosed formatting tag and other high priority Lint errors. I guess there are still about a thousand protected pages with Lint errors. With MalnadachBot working on other pages, I think now is a good time to renew this task and try to get all types of errors. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 08:12, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

I have got a list of all protected pages with Lint errors at User:ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ/protected pages with Lint errors, arranged by namespace. There are 3,483 pages as of this writing. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 16:52, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
I might just have a look at some of those non-user pages with my normal account when I have some time, before doing any bot work. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:57, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

talk page messagebox replacement

Some comments:

  1. I've been trying to normalize dates to one of the accepted date formats on en.wp, without the links too. Here's a couple AWB regexes that I've used recently:
    • \n\| width="48px" \|.*?(\d{1,2} [A-Za-z]+ \d{4}|[A-Za-z]+ \d{1,2}(?:th)?,? \d{4}|\d{1,2}(?:th)? [A-Za-z]+,? \d{4}|\d{1,2}\/\d{1,2}\/\d{4}|\d{2,4}-\d{2}-\d{2}).*\[\[(.*?)\|t.*?(.*?|[Kk]eep|[Mm]erge|[nN]o consensus|[Dd]elete).*?$ -> {{old XfD multi |date=$1 |page=$2 |result=$3}}
    • \n\| width="48px" \|.*?(\d{1,2} [A-Za-z]+ \d{4}).*?\[\[(.*?)\|t.*?([Kk]eep).*?$ -> to same as above.
    • \n\| width="48px" \|.*?(\d{1,2} [A-Za-z]+]] \[\[\d{4}|[A-Za-z]+ \d{1,2}]],? \[\[\d{4}).*\[\[(.*?)\|t.*?(.*?|[Kk]eep).*?$ to same.
    • (\d{1,2}) ([A-Za-z]+)]] \[\[(\d{4}) to $1 $2 $3
    • ([A-Za-z]+ \d{1,2})]],? \[\[(\d{4}) to $1, $2
    • \n\| width="48px" \|.*?(?:).*\[\[(.*?)\|t.*?(.*?|[Kk]eep|[Mm]erge|[nN]o consensus).*?$ to {{old XfD multi |page=$1 |result=$2}}
  2. Try not to use {{tmbox}} if at all possible. Several replacements you've made recently have standard templates that we should try to use.

Izno (talk) 17:48, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

For example, this instead. I know it makes it harder to blanket replaces, but this is something we should get right if we can. In most cases where I've wanted to reach for {{tmbox}} there's been a standard template available. And I would strongly advise not preserving colors in most cases either. --Izno (talk) 17:52, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Duplicate lines in Module:Adjacent stations/TransAdelaide and Module:Adjacent stations/Adelaide

Hey, what is the difference between the 6 duplicate lines in Module:Adjacent stations/TransAdelaide and Module:Adjacent stations/Adelaide? Gonnym (talk) 09:15, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

TransAdelaide is for all the old lines and linked up to TransAdelaide. Adelaide is for the current lines and linked up to Adelaide Metro. It didn't look appropriate for me to be updaing all the articles to just use Module:Adjacent stations/Adelaide so those that were using Template:TransAdelaide color, I thought it was better to use a new module called Module:Adjacent stations/TransAdelaide since the system names were different. If you think they should be all in a single module then feel free to merge them. -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:00, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Not {{bots}}-compliant

Your bot is not complying with {{bots}} directives that deny it permission to operate, as can be seen from this edit. Fix it.  — Scott talk 16:10, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/WOSlinkerBot 22 specifically says it is not exclusion complaint, so it doesn't have to respect {{bots}}. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 16:44, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
So you can just make an invincible bot that nobody can stop from screwing up a page and that's totally fine? What the fuck even is the point of {{bots}} then?  — Scott talk 09:03, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
How exactly did it screw the page up? -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:04, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
You and Malnadach (who at least had the courtesy to make a compliant bot) are mangling the historic record in a misguided attempt to make up for the WMF's engineers failing to handle old font tags. There are two outcomes here: either you implement a compliant bot, or every time your bot touches my talk archives it gets reverted.  — Scott talk 09:14, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

Alternative text for infobox images

Greetings, WOSlinker! You may recall that about a year ago you kindly adjusted several infoboxes to display alternative text for images based on the alt= parameter overriding the caption. You can see our discussions about that at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums/Archive 64#Alternative text for album cover in infobox and at User talk:WOSlinker/Archive 10#More alternative text for images in infoboxes. I would like to request that you do the same for the infobox-related template {{Extra album cover}}. Mudwater (Talk) 22:42, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Template:Break vs. br

H:BR reads:

While valid forms without the / (such as <br> or <br >) will work properly in the rendered page because modern browsers are forgiving of malformed HTML, they can break several of the available syntax highlighters for wiki code in the editing view (mis-highlighting all text in the page after the occurrence of that tag), and so should be avoided.

Template:Break inserts <br/ >, which is proper form. Why, in Template:Symphyotrichum subg. Symphyotrichum cladogram, did you remove the call to the template and replace it with <br>? Input appreciated. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 09:20, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

I have reverted these 46 contributions of yours because they broke syntax highlighting. Please do not do any more edits of this type, as that would be seen as WP:DISRUPTIVE behavior. Thank you. Mathglot (talk) 09:35, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
WOSlinker, now you have removed the template {{Break}} and replaced it with <br/ > in Template:Symphyotrichum subg. Symphyotrichum cladogram. Is there a specific reason? Please respond. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 11:34, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
There's is no need to use a template for a break when the tag will do the same. I've redone the edits with the <br />. -- WOSlinker (talk) 11:38, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Your change does not appear to work, as it inserts a viewable <br />. Did you check your work? – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 11:40, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
So removing the template was for no reason but your preference, and you didn't validate that your change would work. I see you have done this to now dozens of templates, again, only with the slash in the br. Whether it is causing problems in other templates or not, I don't know. Unless there is a technical reason other than "there is no need to use a template", there is also no reason for you to make the changes. User:Mathglot? – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 11:50, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

WARNING : stop your disruptive editing

This is a formal warning about WP:DISRUPTIVE activity. Once again, I've undone your last 45 template edits because they:

  • are not an improvement to the template (no change to rendered page or to transcluded page), and thus a violation of MOS:VAR;
  • are collectively a "large number of [bot-like] assisted edits" without ensuring "that there is a clear consensus that such edits are desired", in violation of WP:ASSISTED;
  • represent a doubling down on previous attempts to insert your preference, despite previous complaints and reverts, in violation of WP:Edit warring;
  • have caused other editors on more than one occasion to have to spend considerable effort to clean up your mess, rather than improve other articles, in violation of WP:DISRUPTION.

While none of these edits involved the use of administrator tools, nevertheless, this is a really bad look for an admin, and very likely a violation of WP:ADMINCOND, on top of everything else. What were you thinking? Please go improve some articles, instead of this pointless diddling of templates that you have no involvement with, and apparently no interest in. Further disruption of this type, and I will be forced to take you to one of the boards for further assessment of your editing behavior. Just go back to your regular editing, and this will all fade away and be forgotten. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 18:48, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Transclusions possibly from Template:Navbox education in Canada

In this week's database report for Wikipedia:Database reports/Template categories containing articles there are couple template categories flooded with articles. Category:Canada education navigational boxes and Category:Navigational box wrapper templates. Also the templates on those pages have unwanted content being transcluded on the template and in the articles that use them. Pretty big mess. See A. Y. Jackson Secondary School (Ottawa) and Template:OCDSB schools for an example.

Tidy font link bug

Can you help with clearing out the last 3 protected pages at Lint errors: Old behaviour of link-wrapping font tags (User pages)? Gonnym (talk) 19:13, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Have you checked with Versageek if they will fix the issues themselves first? I'll do it if they don't mind. -- WOSlinker (talk) 21:07, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
@Gonnym I was already in the process last month, but I ran into an issue and backed myself into the corner with only having that one user's pages remaining after I'd cleared (or had cleared on my behalf) the other 2900 cases of Tidy. (Short story, I was declined on how I'd made my request, not what was requested) I had just needed a little time to figure out how to proceed. Got them done this week, so all Tidys in User space are done.
Hoping to do the same with the Tidys in Talk space, but most (~90%) are full protected. ~24% aren't on admin pages, (likely naughty sockers before Wiki had leveled protection, are former admin, or are old self protection requests-- based on what I found in clearing User pages) so those will mostly be lowerable (to EC or lower). But (~66%) of the 6343 are on admin pages, and that'll be "Fun". Slow. I'm planning on denting this section soon, just have had to take care of some other things off Wikipedia recently.
Found it interesting in my inspection of the remaining pages that for the admin pages that it's only 47 admins making up the ~650 admin pages with this error, and only 13 admins with 100+ Tidy errors to their various pages. Zinnober9 (talk) 13:36, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
This is pure survivorship bias. All of the pages at the top of User:Galobot/report/Pages by Lint Errors are admin-protected pages because we have fixed the unprotected pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:00, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
I meant surprising that it was only 47 admin, not surprising that they are mostly on protected admin pages. That's a lot of errors and pages and I was expecting it to be about 100 admin or more. Zinnober9 (talk) 00:09, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
Fully protecting talk pages is a pretty extreme step. I am surprised that there are as many as 47 editors' pages that are fully protected. I haven't looked, but my guess is that they were protected when there were different practices in place than there are today, and that mass-reduction of their protection levels would be looked upon favorably. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:53, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

CFD categories

Hello, WOSlinker,

I'm not sure why but you are removing CFD tags from categories that still require action be taken with them. Most of these WikiProject members categories have to be moved to WikiProject participant categories. I'm not sure why User:JJMC89 bot III is taken so long with these page moves but I don't think the deletion tags should be removed when the categories still require page moves. But maybe you have an explanation for this that I don't see. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 01:42, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

I think this is the right thing to do, but I am new at category moves. As for User:JJMC89 bot III, I think it is not acting because nobody has pasted the full list of categories at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Large, but there could be some other reason. As far as I know, the full list of CFD'd category pages is ready to be put on that list. I have been working on manually changing userboxes during the last 30 hours. There are a few hundred more to change. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:50, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
They were all subcategories of Category:WikiProject Canada participants and needed their categories updating, so rather than do two separate edits, I removed the cfd notice and updated the categories at the same time. I hadn't done the moves at that time but was going to come back and do them later on. -- WOSlinker (talk) 07:06, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Poland articles with an incomplete B-Class checklist indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 21:42, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Bot tasks

Hey, I was looking for the list of tasks User:WOSlinkerBot was approved (to find the lint related ones) and noticed it doesn't have a list. If you don't mind, could add a list of the approved tasks as it would help probably other editors as well. Thanks! Gonnym (talk) 19:18, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

I've added those now. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:01, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Fixing lint errors tag

Hello! Thank you for your work with User:WOSlinkerBot fixing LINT errors. I was wondering if you would be able to have the bot utilize the fixed lint errors tag? Thank you, HouseBlastertalk 01:19, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

I would but I'm not sure how to add the tags. -- WOSlinker (talk) 08:39, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Maybe the folks at WP:VPTECH would know? I certainly have no clue... HouseBlastertalk 08:47, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
I believe your bot uses JavaScript, so you would add tags: 'fixed lint errors' to the edit API request, per mw:API:Edit. — Qwerfjkltalk 23:13, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Popular pages stopped updating

Hi, sorry to bother but I thought you might be able to help. Recently I noticed that Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical music/Popular pages was not updating properly. I asked about it here:https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Community_Tech_bot#Popular_pages_not_updating

It seems that it was maybe somehow caused by some edit you made... I'm pretty new here and I don't understand how this technical things work. It's a thing that can be fixed? Or because the Classical music Wikiproject does not assess articles the bot won't be able to function again?

Thanks in advance -- Gor1995 𝄞 22:41, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Removing Linter errors by changing the format of pages?

I'm curious about this edit (I happened across it because the page disappeared from a report that I watch), which changed the editor's intended formatting. When I fix Linter errors, I try my best, except in egregious circumstances, to maintain the appearance of a page. What was your rationale in removing these center tags instead of replacing them with a template? Genuinely curious. – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:56, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

I would have just blanked it. It's a blocked editor's page from 2009. Gonnym (talk) 14:17, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Is there a guideline or policy that supports doing so? That would be a lot easier than fixing the errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:38, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
While not policy or a guideline, this may help: Wikipedia:Blanking userpages of blocked editors is not necessarily gravedancing
... most userpages of blocked/banned users on Wikipedia are blanked and replaced with just administrative templates ...
Bruce1eetalk 16:00, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
I've blanked a few pages where the user has not made any edits since 2018, so over 5 years. I might have done the same to this page but it only had the center tags as an issue, so decided to remove them instead in this particular case. -- WOSlinker (talk) 17:54, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Request about a protected page

Hello, I hope you're fine.

Being aware that you protected the page from editing, I want to know if there is any possibility to edit Template:Ice hockey so I've created a navbox for the sport (you can take a look at it on my sandbox).

If this were not possible, I'd think of another name for the template. Regards, Fma12 (talk) 19:16, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Template:Ice hockey is already in use as a redirect and is being used on over 5000 talk pages, so couldn't be used unless all those pages were updated first. You might just have to go with something such as Template:Ice hockey navbox. -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:05, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank, I'm on it then. Fma12 (talk) 00:21, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Template:Table alignment

Hello, is there any technical reason why the template is restricted to the 19th column, or can this be boldly increased in the CSS? Respublik (talk) 21:11, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

There was no reason other than thinking 19 would be enough. Yes, just update the css if more columns are needed. -- WOSlinker (talk) 00:10, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
