WikiProject Television Stations was created to guide the structure of articles related to individual local television stations in North America. For articles relating to other parts of the world, see Descendant WikiProjects and WikiProject Television.

Anyone wishing to take part in this WikiProject is welcome. Nothing is definite, as it's possible that I've forgotten to include other things of importance in the table or structure, plus there are always special cases, so feel free to add something I've missed.

This is a partial list of the tasks the members of this project are currently working on to further the goals of the project.

  1. In response to Nielson's DMCA order removing all references of stations by their designated market areas, develop a new way to sort the TV stations by area.
  2. Infoboxes
    1. Add infoboxes to all TV station articles
    2. Otherwise add [[Category:Television stations that need an infobox]] to that article's categories
    3. Correct the following incorrectly used infoboxes
    4. Check against this prunable list of TV stations and the ones that need infoboxes
  3. Stub sorting - {{US-bcast-stub}} to {{US-tv-station-stub}}
    • This is current, but keep an eye out for future opportunities.
  4. Make sure every article for a US station has a {{TVQ}} on it with the actual FCC call letters (note -TV/- status).
    1. Some pages are being used for more than one station (example: Idaho Public Television) at the present. These pages should have a {{TVQ}} for each callsign until a seperate article for each station can be created.
  5. Make sure all articles are named according to WP:NC#Broadcasting.

    1. This list and this list both have requests to be updated.
  7. Add the talk page template ( {{TelevisionStationsProject}} ) to all TV station article talk pages.

[edit] Notability

While television station articles, like all articles on Wikipedia, should ideally meet the general notability guidelines, in general, any television station which produces original content and is licensed by a national government (e.g., the FCC in the United States) is presumed to be notable. Details can be found at WP:BROADCAST and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common outcomes#Broadcast media.

[edit] Translator stations

However do note that when possible, a minor translator station which only relays the national signal of their network or associated regional station without local deviation (such as those of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, 3ABN and in many cases, translator stations of major network affiliates in the Intermountain West, California, Nevada or other geographically large television markets like that of Charleston-Huntington, West Virginia) should be generally redirected to their mother network or station and listed there in the associated section of the article, if mentioned (see KSL-TV#Translators for an example of how to list a translator station in the mother article). In the case of TBN and 3ABN, redirection-only is fine as listing all those network's translators would be cumbersome, and the networks both provide affiliate and translator directories on their network websites.

If a translator has a history of carrying different networks and of different uses however, use your judgment and determine if it would be appropriate to write a full article detailing that station.

Quickly, a small rundown of what's what in the table:

  • call_letters - The station's call letters. Include "-TV" suffix if, and only if, it applies.
  • station_logo - Include the station's logo - which should not be larger than 220px. Logos are presumed to be non-free; see instructions below before adding an image to Wikipedia or using one in an article.
  • station_slogan - The on-air slogan used by the station. If none is available - enter "none"
  • station_branding - What the station calls itself. Note, this is different from slogan or call letters (generally)
  • analog - The station's analog channel position. Make sure to note if it is UHF or VHF
  • digital - The station's digital channel position. Again, note if it is UHF or VHF
  • post_transition - The station's digital channel after the 2009 DTV transition, for US-based stations. Include only if different from existing DTV channel; note if it is UHF or VHF and note power below. DTV broadcasts currently on channel 52 or above must move to another channel, stations on VHF channel 2-6 must either move or limit their digital power to 20000 watts or less. There is a reasonably-good list (by US state) of DTV stations on w9wi.com which can be used to find affected broadcasters. Note that one does need to use the FCC lookup link (ie: {{TVQ|KTVB}}) at the end of each TV station article to get the most current and official info (a DT [digital television] construction permit, with the new channel numbers and power) for each station.
  • subchannels - For ATSC-digital channels only, a list of all programs being carried on separate subchannels on the same signal. These are often used for HDTV or additional programming such as PBS Create, they may also be used to add additional networks or duplicate existing low-power stations in small markets.
  • other_chs - Channel positions of repeater stations.
  • affiliations - What network or networks the station is affiliated with
  • founded - Date or year the station began service
  • location - The city or cities of primary service
  • owner - The company that owns the station
  • licensee - The company listed by the appropriate authority as the station's licensee, usually a subsidiary of the company above. Do not include if the parent company is the licensee.
  • callsign_meaning - What the stations call letters mean, if anything
  • former_callsign - What the stations former callsigns were
  • former_affiliations - Networks the station used to carry affiliations with. Separate with a comma
  • effective_radiated_power - how powerful the station's analogue and digital transmissions are; if the post-transition DTV operations are on another channel, their power must also be listed.
  • HAAT - Height above average terrain; height of the transmission antenna above the average level of eight evenly-spaced radials at distances from 3 to 16 km around the transmitter
  • AMSL - Height above mean sea level; altitude of the transmission antenna
  • class - Class indication, if any (ie. Class A or Translator for low-power stations)
  • facility_id - The station's FCC facility ID number (US stations)
  • homepage - Station website

[edit] Article structure

A television station article should include:

  • a good introduction
  • history of the station
  • what kind of programming the station airs
    • are there any original shows that the station shows?
  • original shows that the station formerly broadcasted
  • other relevant and verifiable facts about the station
  • information on its personalities, past and present
  • a link to the station's website

[edit] Categories

There are many categories that can be used. Many states and provinces now have their own categories for television. Normally, American and Canadian stations should use at least these categories (such as Category:Television stations in New York). If a state or province subcategory exists or can be created, then please do not file a station in both the state/province and country categories; this is not consistent with Wikipedia policy on the use of categories. Instead, the station should be filed only in the state or province category; the category is then filed in the country category.

Similarly, if a distinct category exists for television stations in a particular city or metropolitan market, file the station only in the city category, and file the city category as a subcategory of the state or province. See Categories, lists and series boxes for more information.

A television station should never be filed directly in Category:Television stations, except in the rare circumstance where it would be impossible to create a more appropriate subcategory.

The U.S. state of Georgia has peculiar category names to avoid conflict with the country: Category:Television stations in Georgia (U.S. state).

[edit] Use of images in articles

Wikipedia allows images to be used in articles, but in order to maintain a freely-distributed online encyclopedia, the following rules must be observed:

  • Before using any image, familiarize yourself with guidelines for non-free content and logos, and the policy on non-free content criteria.
  • Public domain images can be used in all articles without restriction. Most images created before 1923 are in the public domain and do not require a copyright notice; however if the image is also a trademark currently in use, it should be tagged as such. Other images created prior to 1978 may also be in the public domain, but the copyright status of such images should be thoroughly researched prior to use, as their status of public domain is likely to be challenged. Cornell University has published an excellent reference on copyright term and the public domain.
  • Copyrighted, or non-free, images can also be used in all articles, but their use has restrictions that should be understood and followed prior to use:
    • Any non-free image must include a copyright notice and at least one fair-use rationale. See the fair use rationale template for a compliant and easy-to-use rationale.
    • If a non-free image is used in more than one article, a separate fair-use rationale must be created for each use. Links to images without a fair-use rationale will be removed.
      • Note: There is no consensus as to how many uses violates fair use, and excessive use of images may be removed. There is no definition of how many uses is considered excessive, so use good judgment.
    • Excessive use of non-free images in any one article is discouraged. Again, there is no standard for "excessive", so use good judgment. All non-free images should be the subject of critical commentary and should significantly add to the understanding of the article. Non-free images should never be used merely as decoration. Keep in mind that "significance" is subjective and may be challenged.
    • Galleries (meaning multiple images, whether they are enclosed in <gallery> tags or not) of non-free images are generally not allowed. Galleries of historical logos meet legal standards as per Wikipedia General Counsel, but are still controversial, as some do not believe that they meet Wikipedia non-free policies and guidelines. (See Wikipedia:Non-free content, Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, and Wikipedia:Logos.) If creating a historical logo gallery, pay specific attention to NFCC policy statements #3a and #8. Remember that the purpose of a historical logo gallery is to illustrate the evolution of a television station's branding over the years, so there should be noticeable difference between logos and clear critical commentary on each logo. Do not add a logo if the only thing that has changed from the previous logo is the finish of the image.
    • Use of multiple non-free images in an article, or multiple uses of a non-free image is more likely to be challenged, so make sure you have followed all guidelines and policies prior to use. Otherwise, the image may be removed.
