Paine College is a private Historically Black college located in Augusta, Georgia. Paine College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
History
Paine College was founded in 1882 as a historically-black normal school, named The Paine Institute, for the preparation of teachers of then newly-freed men and women. Paine was unique in that its organization was the result of black and white church leaders working together and since the 1890's has maintained an integrated faculty. In 1901 the first four-year degrees were granted at The Paine Institute. During 1903 The Paine Institute was renamed to its present name of Paine College.[1]
