Chronology | |
Predecessor | Audi A4 (convertible) |
The Audi A5 luxury coupé was unveiled simultaneously at the Geneva Motor Show and Melbourne International Motor Show on March 6, 2007. Audi bills the coupé as a grand tourer to compete against the likes of the BMW E92 (BMW 3-Series coupe) and the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class.
The A5 is the coupé variant of the 3rd generation A4 (B8) sedan and estate that was launched at the 2007 Frankfurt auto show. The A5 marks Audi's return to the mid-size coupé market since the (B3/B4) Audi 80-based Coupe model ended production in 1996 - the Mk 2 (B6/B7) A4 spawning a convertible variant but not a coupé.
The A5 debuts the new Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which is planned to underpin the next generation A4, A6 and A8 models. The platform is notable for its departure from Audi's trademark "overhung" engine mounting position over the front axle, in favour of the powertrain being located behind the front axle - in an effort to achieve a more even weight distribution (55/45) between the front and rear wheels.
The Audi A5 is the next model to be released following the second generation TT and R8 models. The A5 has adopted many elements of the Template:Auto bhp bi-turbo V10 Nuvolari concept. The A5 will début with the 3.2-liter FSI V6 engine delivering Template:Auto PS.
The A5/S5 is available with only two engine options:
- 3.2L V6 FSI producing Template:Auto PS
- 4.2L V8 FSI Powerplant in the S5
Audi S5 and RS5
The Audi S5 was released to the public at the same time as the A5. The S5 is powered by a 4.2L V8 FSI producing 354 PS (349 hp/260 kW). It has more aggressive fascia (as most S/RS series Audis do), including a string of LED daytime running lights around the HID headlamps. Audi announced that an RS6 is due in 2009 when today's RS4 ends production. Audi claims that there will only be one RS model in their range at any specific time, which indicates there may be no RS5 in the near future.
Convertible
The Audi A5 Convertible will replace the A4 Convertible. Audi will unveil it at the next Geneva Auto Show in March. Production will start most likely in mid 2008 and will be competing with the 3-series convertible.
Advertising
The Audi A5 is known for its influential and innovative advertising campaigns, including the recent 'Rhythm of Lines' campaign featuring Dustin O'Halloran's Prelude 2.
