Mankatha (Tamil: மங்காத்தா) is a forthcoming Indian Tamil action, comedy and thriller film written and directed by Venkat Prabhu.[3] It will feature Ajith Kumar in the lead role, making it his 50th film,[4] along with an ensemble cast including Nagarjuna, Trisha Krishnan, Vaibhav Reddy, Lakshmi Rai, Vedhika Kumar and Premji Amaren. The film, to be produced and distributed by Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies,[3] was formally launched in August 2010 and is expected to release on 1 May 2011.[5]

Development

Following the release of his film Aasal in February 2010, Ajith Kumar was signed by Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies for a project touted to be directed by Gautham Menon. However, as Ajith Kumar participated in the 2010 season of the FIA Formula Two Championship, Gautham Menon, unwilling to wait, decided to shelve the film and opted to focus on another project,[6] which prompted Venkat Prabhu, who was keen on making a multi-starrer film featuring top stars, to sign the actor in his next film, after the director saw moderate success with his previous film, Goa.[7] The film officially commenced on 2 August 2010 with the formal launch and a simple pooja at the AVM Studios, Chennai, coinciding with Ajith Kumar's 18th anniversary of his entry into the film industry.[8] The film's title, initially being Mangaatha, derived from a popular Indian traditional card game, underwent a minor change in its spelling, due to numerological reasons.[9] A short teaser trailer was also shot on the first day and was screened during the intermission of Naan Mahaan Alla, another Cloud Nine Movies distribution that released on 20 August 2010.[10][11]

Casting

The film is supposed to be a "multi-starrer", with many leading South Indian actors expected to appear in this film, which is a rare occurrence and would be the first of its kind in the Tamil film industry.[2][12] Telugu actor Nagarjuna[13] and Ganesh Venkatraman were approached to essay other lead roles alongside Ajith Kumar, with the former being confirmed by the director during the launch of the film.[5] Mohan Babu's son, Manoj Manchu and Venkat Prabhu's younger brother, Premji Amaren, who had been part of all his brothers' films, were also considered for roles in the film, with Premji also being confirmed to be part of the cast, while a newcomer named Mahat would play another important role.[5] Manoj Manchu, however, take up the offer, who was eventually replaced by Vaibhav Reddy, starring in the third consecutive Venkat Prabhu film.[14] Reports also claimed that Venkat Prabhu himself would also enact a pivotal role in the film.[15]

For the lead female roles, Samantha Ruth Prabhu,[16] and Anushka Shetty were initially approached.[17][18] In July 2010 then reports suggested that Neetu Chandra[19][20] and Lakshmi Rai had supposedly signed for the roles.[21][22] However, in late September 2010, it was confirmed by Venkat Prabhu that Neetu Chandra was not part of the project,[23] and instead Trisha Krishnan was said to have bagged the lead female role eventually, making it her third film with Ajith Kumar,[24] while Sri Lankan model and actress Jacqueline Fernandez was roped in for a guest role.[25] Vedhika Kumar will share screen space with Vaibhav Reddy for a important role.

Venkat Prabhu renewed his previous association with his cousin Yuvan Shankar Raja for the background score and soundtrack of Mankatha,[26] Sakthi Saravanan would handle the cinematography and K. L. Praveen along with N. B. Srikanth would take care of the editing.[27]

Filming

The film was formally launched on 2 August 2010 at the AVM Studios in Vadapalani, Chennai in a simple manner,[28] following which the film's shooting commenced with the principal photography.[29] The first schedule of filming was supposed to begin by early September,[30] but due to pre-production works and since the prinicipal cast was not decided yet, the shooting got delayed further.[15] It is now expected to commence on 25 October in Chennai, with the scenes involving Ajith Kumar and Premji to be shot.[31]

Soundtrack

As with Venkat Prabhu's previous directorials, Yuvan Shankar Raja was signed up as the music composer of the film, which also happens to be his fourth Ajith Kumar project. Reportedly, the soundtrack consists of 6 tracks, with one of them featuring Yuvan Shankar along with his father Ilaiyaraaja's vocals, which incidentally is the first time both are singing together.[32] In mid-October 2010, during Navratri, Yuvan Shankar Raja started composing the first tunes for the film,[33][34] including the "intro song" of Ajith Kumar, for which he had taken "special care".[35]
