Overview

For those who aren't sure what this is about: The Arbitration Committee is part of the Wikipedia dispute resolution process. In fact, ArbCom is pretty much the last stop. For a general real world analogy, ArbCom is sort of like the Supreme Court of Wikipedia. The arbitrators don't make decisions on article content, but they do issue rulings on complex disputes relating to user conduct, and they have considerable authority within the wiki-culture. Members of the committee are usually elected for two-year terms (sometimes one), with a new batch elected each year.

In October 2011, an RfC took place concerning the format of the 2011 elections, at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Arbitration Committee Elections December 2011, and questions for the candidates were gathered here. Candidates self-nominated from November 12–21. The election itself began on November 27 and will run until December 10. Votes will then be compiled and analyzed, and the results probably announced about a week later.

For this 2011/2012 cycle, eight arbitrators on the current committee will be continuing their existing terms (see the green-highlighted names in Tranche Alpha of the chart), and seven vacancies will be filled by this election. The newly elected arbitrators will all be serving 2-year terms.

This page that you are reading, will contain my (Elonka's) thoughts on the 2011 crop of ArbCom candidates. My general standards for a candidate are: admin access, integrity, experience with article-writing, and hands-on knowledge of the dispute resolution processes.

N Oppose. Continue to have concerns about his list at User:AGK/Drafts where he is claiming substantial article-writing credit (such as rewriting stubs), when in actuality all he did was make minor edits. Examples: London Paddington station, Obsessive–compulsive disorder. I have worked with AGK on various projects, and have not been comfortable with his level of emotional maturity. I have found him to react very defensively when challenged, and I have strong concerns about his ability to handle the workload of being an arbitrator. I just don't think he would be a good arbitrator, and therefore, I must oppose.

Y Support.. Current member of ArbCom, running for re-election. I do not always agree with Coren. And sometimes I have concerns about Coren's ability to present things in a professional manner. But I have respect for Coren's ability to think, and I trust Coren's desire to do the right thing for the project, therefore Coren still has my support.

Y Support. Current member of ArbCom, running for re-election. Has done a good job, and I would like to see him continue. I do see that he's run afoul of a couple Wikipedia cliques here and there, but I don't see that as a bad thing. I very much like that he has strong pro-civility views, so he definitely has my support.

Y Support. Current member of ArbCom, running for re-election. He's made the controversial decision here and there, but I don't see that as a serious problem. He's very good at drafting cases, has worked hard as an arbitrator for several years, and if he's up for another term, I'm willing to support.

Y Support. Current member of ArbCom, running for re-election. When Roger Davies first ran in 2008, I was Neutral, leaning towards an oppose, primarily because of his lack of experience with dispute resolution. However, he has done an excellent job as an arbitrator, and obviously has the experience now, so I am very comfortable supporting him this time around.
