Kylie Minogue concert chronology |
Showgirl: The Greatest Hits Tour was the seventh concert tour by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. Minogue was originally scheduled to perform in Australia and Asia during the tour, but she was forced to cancel the tour when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.[2] She resumed the tour – renamed Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour – on 11 November 2006, performing at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, with a revised set list and new costumes.[3] The tour is estimated to have grossed over US$19.9 million in the UK alone.[4]
Concert synopsis
Showgirl: The Greatest Hits Tour was divided into seven strong acts: Showgirl, Smiley Kylie, Denial, What Kylie Wants, Kylie Gets, Dreams, Kylesque, Minx in Space, an intermission and an encore. The tour incorporated references from Art Deco and incorporated many different aspects and personae of the Showgirl, including the Las Vegas Showgirl, the Disco Diva, the Space Age Showgirl and the Les Follies Showgirl. The set was able to become a lot grander due to the sale of her greatest hits album, Ultimate Kylie, with 5 lifts, a cake lift, trusses, a big projection screen, 2 grand staircases and a door in the back.
Showgirl opens the show with an instrumental introduction entitled the Showgirl Theme, which, on the screen at the back, is introducing the show with writing, which say STARRING and then the lights blare and the theme comes to an end,the shadow of Kylie rising through the centre of the stage on a set of mini stairs. The opening bars of Better The Devil You Know play and when the first words are sung by the backing dancers, the lights come on to show Kylie smiling dressed in a corset with silver stars attached, a blue feathery headdress and an attachment made of the same thing that is attached to the back of the corset. She finishes the song and the crowd cheers. In Your Eyes plays and Kylie welcomes the audience and asks the usual question: "How you feeling tonight?" When the song finishes the male dancers leave the stage. Giving You Up plays and the dancers enter dressed with yellow-feathered headdresses. Kylie performs a quick dance interlude as the dancers walk off and the music changes to ballad-type characteristics. Kylie turns away from the audience and begins a half-ballad version of On a Night Like This. She repeats the chorus before breaking into the original version of the song (the crowd cheering as she does) and walking to the right of the stage to sing the second chorus and the middle 8 before turning to the place which she rose through the floor and walking towards it. She sings the end of the song and the music changed to that at the beginning of the song, as Kylie descends below the stage. The lights go down and the backing vocalists keep singing. When they stop, the curtain projected on the screen at the back falls and then the stage and surrounding go dark.
Smiley Kylie begins with a beat similar to that at the beginning of the studio version of Shocked. The dancers emerge through the stage and perform a detailed and difficult dance routine before an excerpt of Do You Dare? plays and the music turns to simply the piano playing 4 notes before Shocked plays and it plays up until the rap and phrases from: Give Me Just a Little More Time (brrrr), It's No Secret (repeated title lyrics), Keep on Pumpin' It and What Kind of Fool (Heard All That Before) before What Do I Have to Do plays and Kylie asks "Do you know this one?" before singing both verses and choruses before returning to centre stage and saying "OW!" and excerpts of "I'm Over Dreaming (Over You)" play and the first verse of Spinning Around plays and Kylie sings up to the Middle 8 of well known "Baby baby baby, you know you like it like this" and it breaks up into excerpts of Step Back in Time and then "Spinning Around" plays with excerpts of "Step Back in Time" and "Such a Good Feeling" plays over the top. Kylie points to the audience and walks through the door at the back of the stage while the dancers carry on dancing until the end of the song where the lifts either side of the stage take them down.
Denial opens with a virtual duet with Neil Tennant of the song "In Denial", the accompanying dancer being Jason Beitel. Street lamps, similar to that of the one in the Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi video, rise up on the side lifts. Kylie enters from the right at the back and goes over the "bridge" and descends the stairs on the other side before moving to the back of the stage and the female dancers enter the stage through the very middle. The music changes to a small interlude before coming into Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi. Kylie spends time by the street lamps before another small interlude plays and Confide in Me kicks in and the crowd cheers. Kylie and Jason perform a dance before Kylie goes back to her microphone and all dancers exit the stage. Kylie goes to the centre lift and sings the remaining chorus before being taken down; the lights then extinguish.
What Kylie Wants, Kylie Gets begins with four of the male dancers rise through the stage in front of a fake shower, before the beat breaks out and Kylie rises through the lift she just descended, lying on a vault table. She sings Body Language single Red Blooded Woman dressed in a knee length, strapless leotard, with a rose on a bracelet. She sings a chorus of Where the Wild Roses Grow and goes back to the Middle 8 of Red Blooded Woman. She says thank you and goes on to sing Slow. Her and the dancers position their bodies to spell out "Slow". Kylie runs through the door and the dancers perform a dance interlude imitating a bull fight before Kylie emerges from the door with a red dress over her previous outfit and a flower in her hair. She performs Light Years song Please Stay. She performs a mini dance interlude with the dancers and then leaves the stage, again through the door, at the start of the next chorus. The dancers dance, mouthing the words as the backing vocalists sing the remainder of the song.
The interlude lasts for half an hour.
Dreams kicks off the second half of the show with a cover of "The Wizard of Oz" song Over the Rainbow. It sees Kylie rise from behind the set seated on a glittering moon in a pink ball gown. She finishes the song and begins the ballad version of Come into My World. The moon takes her to centre stage where she stands up and the dancers enter from either side of the stage. The moon rises and Chocolate begins. Kylie descends the catwalk to sing the remainder of the song. The dancers join her and surround her in a circle. On the final chorus, at the end of the song, the stage changes so that where the dancers and Kylie are standing, looks like a cake. Kylie sings I Believe in You and thanks the audience and the stage returns to normal. Kylie goes on to sing Impossible Princess song "Dreams".The dancers exit the stage at the second verse. Kylie remains at the end of the catwalk. At the very end of the song she turns and sits where she is and is taken beneath the stage via a platform.
Kyleque begins with the female dancers rising from the middle of the stage behind hearts. They perform a dance behind them before pushing them open and the hearts descend. Hand on Your Heart plays, the crowd sheers, the dancers dance and a bigger heart rises at the back of the stage with Kylie in front of it, dressed in a sparkly gold, thigh length dress and red shoes. She says: "Are you ready? Just step back in time!". The song finishes and the lights go out. A jazz version of The Loco-Motion is introduced and the male dancers enter on the side lifts seated on chairs. The Loco-Motion ends and Kylie thanks the audience. Kylie and the dancers move to the back of the stage and move in time with the music before I Should Be So Lucky plays and the crowd cheers. Throughout the song, the dancers sign the words. The song ends and Kylie thanks the audience. When the next song begins with a drum beat, Kylie is not present. Your Disco Needs You plays and Kylie appears with the a hat on. She finishes the song and an instrumental of the song sounds and the backing dancers sing to it. Kylie turns to face the audience and salutes and the lights extinguish.
Minx in Space begins with soft music and the dancers standing still on the stage. Then, Put Youself in My Place plays and Kylie walks out from the back doors dressed in a sparkly blue corset with "wings" attached to the back. She walks all the way down the catwalk. The music changes to what it was at the beginning of the act and Kylie walks to the back of the stage. The lights extinguish. The piano plays notes for a bit before Kylie's worldwide hit, Can't Get You Out Of My Head breaks out and the crowd cheer. She sings up to te last part as she descends the catwalk. She says "London" and then finishes with "I just can't get you out of my head". She says thankyou and runs to the back of the stage where she is let through the back door.
Encore begins with Kylie ascending the stairs at the very left and thanks everyone before moving to center stage and says "see if you remember this one". Especially For You plays and Kylie invites the audience to sing Jason Donovan's part. The song ends and Kylie says that it would be rude if she left without doing one more song. Love at First Sight plays and Kylie is dancing round. On the screens at the back, clips from her career are played. She finishes the song and says thank you. An instrumental version plays and she thanks the dancers and the band before running to the back of the stage and saying her usual "love to you all goodnight" and walks through the back door.
