The film is an official remake of Umesh Shukla's 2012 Hindi film OMG – Oh My God! about an atheist who sues god.[3][4][5] The filming began on June 9, 2014.[6] As of now, the film is scheduled for a 14 January 2015 release.[7]

Development

In early April 2013, the writer duo Paruchuri Brothers informed the media that they were in final stages in acquiring the remake rights and that work on the script would begin after acquiring the rights. It was also said that Ravi Teja would play the role of Lord Krishna in this film which was done by Akshay Kumar in the original and that the official confirmation of the film would be happening in a week.[8] However, in mid-November 2013, reports emerged that Daggubati Venkatesh would play the role of Lord Krishna and Rajendra Prasad would reprise Paresh Rawal in the film. It was said that Daggubati Suresh Babu acquired the remake rights and would produce the film while Jayanth C. Paranjee would direct the film.[9][10] But later Kishore Kumar Pardasany was selected as the director of the film.[11] After much speculation, Suresh Babu confirmed to the media in mid-February 2014 that Pawan Kalyan would play the role of Lord Krishna and Sharat Marar would be co producing the film on North Star Entertainment.[12] After considering the titles Deva Devam Bhaje,[13] Go Go Go Govinda, Ori Devuda, Mr. Devudu and Gopala Gopala,[14] the film's title was chosen to be Gopala Gopala just before its formal launch on June 9, 2014 at Hyderabad.[15] Anoop Rubens would be replacing Sohail Sen as the music director.,[16] and Jayanan Vincent was selected to handle the cinematography despite reports stating that P. C. Sreeram would be doing the job.[5]

Casting

Though initially it was reported that Venkatesh and Rajendra Prasad were playing the main roles in the film, it was later known that Rajendra Prasad was not a part of the film and that Venkatesh would reprise Paresh Rawal. The producers were in talks with Vikram for the role of god.[17] Later, Pawan Kalyan was selected to play the role of Lord Krishna.[12] After considering Nayantara,[18] Anjali,[19] and Radhika Apte for the role of heroine opposite Venkatesh in the film,[20] Shriya Saran was selected to play the role in early May 2014 after Nayantara walked out of the project due to dates issues and remuneration problems.[21][22] In early June 2014, Mithun Chakraborthy, was selected to reprise his role from the original, thereby making his debut in Telugu cinema through the film.[23] Posani Krishna Murali, Krishnudu, Raghu Babu, Vennela Kishore were selected to play other important roles in the film.[6]

Pawan Kalyan underwent a special diet and exercises to loose weight and look fit for the role in the film. Reports stated that he would use a Hyosung GV650 Aquila Pro in the film.[24][25] Madhu Shalini was selected to play the role of a journalist.[26] However, it was not known whether she reprised Nidhi Subbaiah or Tisca Chopra from the original.[27] Diksha Panth was selected to reprise Poonam Jhawer from the original.[28] Kishore Kumar said that the role of Pawan Kalyan would be seen for 25 minutes as in the original movie, played by Akshay Kumar.[29] His screen length was later extended to 45 minutes.[30] Venkatesh handpicked his wardrobe for his character and incorporated different hues of short kurtas to his wardrobe and used a lot of linen and cotton with more than 40 changes onscreen. He researched about the kind of clothes he needs to sport for this role and shopped personally for his outfits and ensured that the clothes matched all his scenes.[31]

Filming

Osmania University's College for Women, where the film's court scenes were shot.

In early May 2014, the film's co-producer Sharat Marar, in an interview to IANS, said that the film's regular shooting was planned to commence from May 19, 2014 onwards, after Pawan Kalyan was relieved from his political duties, further saying that the makers were aiming for a September 2014 release.[32] However, it could not happen and after much speculations, reports emerged that the film would be officially launched on June 2, 2014 and the shoot would continue in a specially erected set in Hyderabad.[33] However, principal photography commenced a week later on June 9, 2014 at Ramanaidu Studios at Nanakramguda in Hyderabad.[34] Venkatesh joined the shoot in the same day.[35] Pawan Kalyan allotted 25 days for the shoot of his character in the film whose duration is half an hour.[36]

Ramoji Film City, where parts of the film were shot.

The film's second schedule started on July 18, 2014 at Hyderabad after a brief break due to Venkatesh, who went to promote his film Drushyam. It was also reported that Pawan Kalyan would join the film's sets on July 23, 2014 and makers would be shooting a special sequence in which Pawan Kalyan would be seen driving his personal bike and with that schedule, it was expected that the film's talkie part would come to an end.[37][38] Pawan Kalyan however joined the sets two days in advance and scenes featuring him and Venkatesh were shot.[39] The film's shoot continued in the outskirts of Hyderabad where scenes on Venkatesh. Pawan Kalyan and Shriya Saran were shot.[40] The film's shoot continued in late August 2014 at Nanakramguda.[41] The exteriors of Osmania University's College for Women located at Koti, Hyderabad were used to shoot a court scene, which was confirmed by the producer Daggubati Suresh Babu, who said that the college had the look which suited the scene.[42]

Filming then proceeded in Ramoji Film City.[43] Pawan Kalyan shot for his introductory song in late September 2014.[44] The filming was almost complete and in mid October 2014, the film's climax was shot in the outskirts of Hyderabad.[45] A song on Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan was planned to be shot which was not a part of the original.[46] In the end of October 2014, crucial earthquake scenes were shot on Venkatesh and others at Ramoji Film City.[47] Filming then continued in Nanakramguda. By then, 75% of the film's shoot was complete and Pawan Kalyan was said to complete shooting for his part in the next couple of weeks.[48] The next schedule was planned in Varanasi for few days and it was known that shooting of two songs and graphics work were remaining for completion.[49] By mid November 2014, the film's shoot neared completion.[50] Venkatesh and Shriya joined the film's sets in Vishakhapatnam where a song and few scenes were shot in 3 days.[51] On the schedule's completion, the production team revealed that the schedule was shot in the city only to boost the morale of the team at Ramanaidu Studios and also give out a message to the Bengali and Odiya film industries that film shootings can be carried out smoothly post destruction of the city due to Cyclone Hudhud.[52] The film was shot near Varanasi in early December 2014. Venkatesh and other artistes participated in the shoot there.[53]

Music

In mid-April 2014, Sohail Sen was selected to compose the music for the film which was his Telugu debut.[54] He also met the makers in Hyderabad for the music sittings later.[55] But Anoop Rubens replaced him in June 2014 as the music director of the film. [56] The makers said that he composed and recorded a song before the launch of the film and it was also said that all the songs would be recorded in a week's time from the launch.[57] On August 14, 2014 Lahari Music acquired the film's audio rights along with Drushyam for an amount of 8 million (US$96,000).[58] In mid November 2014, the soundtrack album was announced to be released in December 2014.[50] The release date was confirmed as December 14, 2014 in late November 2014.[59] It was postponed later to December 28, 2014.[60]

The film's soundtrack was reported to feature 3 songs in total and Pawan Kalyan was reported to appear in two of them. A unique audio launch was planned by the makers which was different from routine events.[61] Kailash Kher posted in his twitter page on 16 December 2014 that he completed recording for a song in the soundtrack.[62]

Release

The film was earlier planned to be released on either September or October 2014, but a January 2015 Sankranthi release was announced in July 2014.[63] Gemini TV acquired the film's Television broadcast rights in early December 2014.[64] Suresh Babu sold the rights for an amount of 200 million (US$2.4 million) as a three film package including Drushyam and Bhimavaram Bullodu, both co-produced by him.[65] The release date was confirmed as 14 January 2015.[7] United States theatrical rights were acquired by BlueSky Cinemas Inc.[1]

Marketing

The film's motion poster was unveiled on 28 November 2014.[66] The poster was designed by Anil and Bhanu of AB Core Design.[53] It began trending on social networking sites within few hours, it became a worldwide trending topic which The Times of India called astonishing.[67] Anoop Rubens received acclaim for his background score in the motion poster.[68] Another poster featuring Pawan Kalyan and Venkatesh on a bike was unveiled on 16 December 2014.[69]
